A recreation of a Broadway production with home-grown talent, a few days spent finding God; nights of formals and bids, bands and autographs; and a traditional presenta¬ tion of new and old yuletide carols have all become part of Noll’s very existence. The enthusiasm created in planning and awaiting these events can take the mo¬ notony out of doldrum days. Their suc¬ cess lies only in their continuance. EVENTS y COMPLEMENTING classroom ac¬ tivities and challenging the intellectual, spiritual, or physical interest of the stu¬ dent are the diversified clubs and organi¬ zations at Noll. Their aims range from preparing for future careers to promot¬ ing school spirit or dabbling in the arts. All were created so that the student might develop and pursue his personal interests more fully. ORGANIZATIONS 5 AT NOLL, there is an event for every boy with any desire to excel in athlet¬ ics, and there is a busy schedule for any Noll sports fan to follow. Varsity footballers rekindled spirit. The tank¬ men were out to improve a 14-1 record while grapplers intended to break last years .500. A junior-laden varsity bas¬ ketball squad sought to fan the spirit. Smoke signals from the Warrior camp indicate that this is the year for rebuild¬ ing; next year is the year for winning. 6 BISHOP NOLL IS- BISHOP NOLL’S curriculum is de¬ signed to give the student the best sec¬ ondary education possible. Educational activity is geared to provide the student with a broad background in subject areas conducive to total participation in schools of higher learning. Those who do not plan to attend college may take subjects which will help them find a suitable job after graduation. CURRICULUM 9 STUDENT INTERESTS at Bishop Noll are not limited only to the class¬ room. They extend to involvement in clubs, sports, and dramatic produc¬ tions. Going to games and dances and participating in organizations also make the students conscious of their social obligations. Besides intellectual and social opportunities at Noll relig¬ ious instructions and guidance contrib¬ ute to the student’s spiritual develop¬ ment and maturity. UNDERCLASSMEN 11 OUT ST AN DING scholastic achievers are part of B.N.I.’s success. In addition to maintaining high grades, these stu¬ dents represent Noll in outside academ¬ ic activities. Among these achievers are exceptional science students, Quill Scroll essay contest winners, and those whose scores on P.S.A.T., S.A.T., N.E.D.T., or National Merit tests rank them among the best in the country. Pictured here are thirty-seven students who are among Noll’s finest. HONORS AWARDS 13 BISHOP NOLL IS ADMINISTRATION 14 DIVERSITY among the members of the Bishop Noll faculty is not confined only to personality and interests, but it extends to areas of national origin and heritage. Faculty members have come from the immediate Calumet Region and from the distant lands of Greece and France as well. The faculty take a personal interest in their students and act as advisors and sponsors of various activities. FACULTY 15 . . how many French books do we need?; pay to the order of Bishop Knoll Institution; they changed the prices!” ORIENTATION □ On Orientation Day a confused and excited Class of ‘70’ be¬ came, for the first time, a part of Bishop Noll Institute. The freshmen arrived eager and ready to embark on a new experience that could prove to be an enlightening adventure lasting for four very eventful years. The inductants’ first activity as freshmen was to locate their new homerooms and to pick up their class sched¬ ules. This, of course, provided the frosh with the opportunity to meet their homeroom teachers and to become somewhat familiar with their classmates. After these things were reasonably accom¬ plished, the frosh went down to the cafeteria with their new-found friends, and bought the necessary books. Amidst all this activity, the Class of ‘70’ was expected to get photographed, locate their lockers and try out the combinations. ■ -fexd- 1 JJL oJjAhU ' U JLu i4q_ UrkiM- IamA ' M JJ fyuu ' jUL GjjMlX rrr L. f (p £ fit idt Students offer their services for pre- Homecoming parade activities. HOMECOMING □ Fall is the opportune time for a Homecoming and its color and excitement. This year, preparations became frantic in order to meet the early deadline of an October 6 Homecoming. The ceremonies were inaugurated with a pep rally and the Senior skit. Fifty decorated cars and four floats formed the parade. ‘The Fresh¬ man-Sophomore float was a giant clock with the slogan, “Their time is up.” A baby carriage and the words, “We’re expecting victory,” expressed the hope of the Juniors. The Senior float, a torpedoed submarine read, “Sink ’em.” “Our Fair Ladies” was the theme of the black and white queens’ float which carried each member of the court in a crown. Half-time ceremonies centered on the coronation of the queen, Yvonne Linders. Dennis Scheidt reigned with Yvonne as Mr. Touch¬ down. Saturday night’s dance, “Basin Street Blues,” climaxed the homecoming events. ■ RETREAT Masses became more meaningful with a familiar background. 20 EVENTS □ Folk-hymn Masses, processions, guitars, hootenannys, and art work made Retreat Week at Noll a unique experience. The theme, “Reach Out,” stimulated the interests and participation of the students. Retreat masters instilled in the students an awareness that they could find God in their lives only by willingly associating with other people and learning to accept them for what they are. Discussion panels on subjects fundamental to the student’s lives helped them to understand and surmount their difficulties, doubts, and prejudices toward God, Church, and fellow man. Students in small groups standing close around the altar at Mass became a recreation of the Last Supper. Silence was not obligatory, only recommended. The closing ceremony of Retreat was the Bible Service. By singing hymns and reciting responses to the word of God, the students became one in voice and spirit. Retreat helped everyone to feel a certain openness and understanding toward himself and others. ■ Grandfather Vanderhof finds the business world boring and unfit for personal accomplishment. 22 EVENTS SENIOR PLAY □ Bishop Noll’s Theater replaced Broadway and the celebrated comedy, You Can’t Take It With You, became the Senior Play. Chosen because of it’s recently successful revival in New York, the play uncovered unsuspected Senior talent. Outstanding per¬ formances by the cast were due to the efforts of Charles Breckle, director, Brother John, producer, and the Seniors themselves. Alice Sycamore (Linda Esparsa) finds her unordinary cornflakes- in-the-icebox family an obstacle to marriage with Tony Kirby (Larry Cummings), the boss’s son. Some of the strange interests occupying members of the Sycamore household include the manu¬ facture of fireworks, income tax evasion, and a snake collection. Other members of the cast were Paulette Dybel as Penelope Syca¬ more, Tom Egan as Boris Kolenkov and Dan McCann as Martin Vanderhof. The single set provided a challenge to Noll’s stage crew and Seniors who faced the task of duplicating the decor of the 1930’s in creating the Sycamore’s living room. Jim Holicky was responsible for the stage lighting and the construction of the set. ■ Eccentricities become hobbies and whims become goals in the Sycamore family. EVENTS 23 24 EVENTS WINTER DANCE □ Step into the land of snowflakes and mistletoe. Noll couples entered the little known kingdom “Under the Christmas Tree” at the Winter Dance. Bryan Nelson and the Rhythm-Aires provided music for dancing beneath an evergreen ceiling. Amidst the varied decorations, the focal point was a huge tree trunk surrounded by an assortment of toys, gaily wrapped presents, stuffed animals, and miniature trains. Adding to the atmosphere of the Christmas season were fir trees, colored glass, snowflakes, candles, and snow piled against a window pane. Everyone was carefree with the spirit of Christmas vacation. The Seniors heading the decorations committee, Donna Tomko and Mary Golonka, spent a great deal of their vacation on the preparations. At this year’s dance, girls were given the choice of dressing in formals or semi-formals, which added variety. ■ EVENTS 25 26 EVENTS MARDI GRAS □ Mardi Gras, Bishop Noll style, has become a traditional prep¬ aration for Lent. The festive flavor of New Orleans reveals itself in the mixture.of prizes and chances, song and dance, food and drink. Originality and ingenuity transform ideas into gaily deco¬ rated booths. Much of the success of Mardi Gras is due from slave trading to knee painting. Students and adults alike find that giving can be even more rewarding than receiving when the proceeds go to the foreign missions. A fitting climax to a very full day was the coronation of the Mardi Gras King and Queen, Ron Polak and Mary Canan. 11:00 p.m.; confetti, crepe paper and tickets littered the floor; booths once again were just bare wood frames; voices, excitement and laughter ceased; and Mardi Gras was part of the past. ■ Malvolio turns and the conspirators freeze behind the rose bushes. ENGLISH PLAYS □ Bishop Noll’s English Department has developed a new ap¬ proach to the teaching of drama, through the Drama Unit. The purpose of the Drama Unit was to enlarge and supplement the English curriculum in drama by using the play-lecture system. English teachers presented lectures to the students on various topics such as: the history of drama, the Elizabethan theater, the art of comedy, and the artist’s conception of modem man in the theater of the absurd. Each lecture was followed by a play per¬ formed by the students themselves. The lectures provided the students with a basis for greater understanding and appreciation of the plays they saw. Indirectly, they were prepared to be a responsive and well-informed audience. The unit gave to the stu¬ dents a unique study of a fascinating art. ■ EVENTS 29 ENGLISH PLAYS □ Drama has to be acted to be fully understood. This year, the purpose of the Drama Unit was to give students an opportunity to see plays that were carefully selected to inform them of a particu¬ lar facet of drama. My Three Angels was not presented as an entire play. Certain scenes were shown along with comments from the director, which gave viewers a realistic look at a play in rehearsal. A new experience in theater was presented through Spoon River Anthology, a play which is poetry in dramatic form. Twelfth Night served as an introduction to Shakespeare for the underclassmen. For the upperclassmen, it was a study in the techniques and art of comedy. The Leader introduced Juniors and Seniors to a modern comedy in the theater of the absurd. Through the Drama Unit, English students became familiar with a wide range of dramatic forms. ■ 30 EVENTS Put people together, girls and boys . . . SOCK HOPS □ “Stop! Hey, what’s that sound? Everybody look what’s going ’round.” Tonight there is a sock hop and the gym is filled from comer to corner. They come to get together with friends, to dance, and to talk with that special someone. There is a band with a “boss sound,” sometimes a big-name group, sometimes a band from school. The scene is psychedelic. Girls wear the “total look,” matching everything from shoes to ribbons. Boys come in polka dot ties, flowered shirts and plaid pants. They’re “up, down, all around” and “drums keep pounding rhythm to the brain”. Big crowds, small groups, and couples form circles and snakes; they innovate and improvise. The gym is turned into a new world and “the beat goes on.” This year, Seniors have been given the privi¬ lege of a guest list which allows them to bring friends from other schools. ■ EVENTS 35 THE MUSICAL . . it all happened just like he said. The lights. And the flags and the colors. And the cymbals.” □ Involvement and professionalism made BNI’s production of Music Man a mas¬ terpiece of student ingenuity and co-operation. The cast and stage crew made the costumes and built the sets, sold tickets and promoted publicity. This year’s musi¬ cal, produced by Br. John and directed by Mr. Breckle, was the largest production ever put on at Noll. Members of the cast had to be taught to act, sing, dance, and play musical instruments. Terry Sherman played Professor Harold Hill, the confi¬ dent, smooth-talking swindler, who came to River City, Iowa and sold the popu¬ lace the idea that music would protect their sons from the evils of drink, pool and scarlet women. He organized a band even though he could not read a note or play an instrument himself. A rival salesman, however, exposes the swindle. Our hero is about to be tarred and feathered when Marion Paroo (Mary Lynn Kolas), with whom he had fallen in love, intercedes in his behalf and convinces the townspeople that he had brought happiness into their lives by introducing them to the world of music. ■ “Let each day be kissed with the glowing memory of ‘London’s Kiss of Mist.’ ” □ There are many things in the world that can spark a romantic flare and a combination of spring, flowers, arid London town is to be included among them. Prom night turned Noll into a London park in the glorious springtime. Strolling on a dimly lit bridge, looking into the water while holding his hand, dancing beneath the trees, and chatting with friends around a quiet table in a little pub—this was “London’s Kiss of Mist.” The Junior class was responsible for planning and organizing the prom. Mary Golonka and Terry Idu designed the rows of scenery. Kathy Peifer and Jim Fischer reigned as queen and king of the prom. A happy night, a special someone, tuxes, flowers and long dresses, a post prom party at the Dorchester Inn and a kiss was all that was necessary for an enchanted evening. ■ atlc I - za- a£a- a -cc a £aSt s ! u - “-f A - - JfrbcjL- AAA Z Z-- jZAXtSV Zrf cf - - y 6 -4 S IAALJL _ % vz ACTIVITIES f XAAA-rr r yt jLAU- L ' £ A 6 1 % n Zc 7 -2s a As£c . -zAZc Senior Week was, as Noreen La Mereso fittingly remarked in her valedictory [peech, “. . . a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to Cc , . . . .” It was the end; it was the beginning. The theme of the Senior Dance, to Remember,” expressed the feeling of nostalgia as they recalled memories past four years together. Final exams, no more classes, commencement practice, caps and gowns, and empty lockers indicated that the seniors were about to begin a new phase of their lives apart from Bishop Noll. The final events of the week included the solemn concelebration of the Baccalaureate Mass, followed by the presentation of awards and scholarships. On Graduation Day, the graduates v marched into the fieldhouse accompanied by the faculty in their academic robes. With the distribution of diplomas at the commencement exercises, the activities of Senior Week came to a close. To the seniors, these four years would probably be not only “. . . a time to keep,” but also “a time to cast away.” ■ EVENTS 39 Cocky pra ys, “Who can I turn to if you turn away?” 40 EVENTS SUMMER □ BNI’s Summer Theatre presented The Roar of the Greasepaint- The Smell of the Crowd in Noll’s cafeteria. The Roar is an avant- THEATRE garde drama, the first ever presented in this area and Noll’s first summer production. The setting is a gameboard—the game of life. The characters represent mankind in all his aspects—triumphs and troubles. The conflict is between the “haves” and the “have nots.” Cocky (Terry Sherman) is a constant loser who plays the game with Sir (Phil Ponce) who wins all the time because he makes all the rules. When someone even more handicapped than Cocky wins a game, Cocky is encouraged to challenge the superi¬ ority of Sir’s position and he wins a game for the first time. Cocky and Sir begin to realize that neither one can succeed in life alone and they decide to work together to start a new game with new rules. An old idea of a stage in the round made The Roar much more real to the audience who sat only a few feet away. ■ Nancy Sidote Madge Timkovich Bob Engle Nancy Kosenka Tim Burkhardt Linda Sidote BUI Jordan Mary Beth Gainer Nancy Proctor Barb Spebar Sue Lobonc EUeen LaMere Dave Van Sant Ed Orlowski Gerry Knesek Marcia Wemtz Bruce Flusche Maggie Ispas MARQUETTE Co-editor Co-editor Business Manager Business Assistant Art Editor Photographic Editor Photographer Copy Editor Copy Assistant Copy Assistant Class Editor Class Assistant Class Assistant Sports Editor Sports Assistant Features Editor Index Editor Index Assistant Bob Engle Business Manager Seated; Maggie Ispas, Eileen LaMere, Nancy Proctor. Nancy Sidote Co-editor ORGANIZATIONS 43 PUBLICATIONS Long hours of work often bring feelings of accomplishment, sometimes only weariness. □ Students with a flair for journalism have several mediums of expression. The JourNoll provides a link between teachers and students with up-to-date news reporting and articles of general interest to everyone. A newspaper entails a tremendous amount of work and the staff usually stays late under the pressure of making deadlines for each issue. News Bureau writers Karen LaSota and Rich Bartoni send a weekly column to The Hammond Times. 1966 was the year of The Beginning the school’s first literary magazine. Aiming to give students an opportunity to see their creative writing in print and to establish a magazine of quality at Noll, it is a tribute to its staff, which has a desire to achieve and create. Bemie Madura is the editor under the guidance of Jack Nelson. ■ 44 ORGANIZATIONS Words must be worked over until they fit perfectly. ORGANIZATIONS 45 □ Establishing unity between students, administration, and fac¬ ulty is the purpose of the Student Council. Being the tool of communication within the school, each Student Council meeting of homeroom representatives, class officers, and Student Council officers becomes a “sounding board” to discuss difficulties and suggest possible solutions. The Student Council is in charge of designing the school calendar of events and activities. It schedules dances and activities sponsored by individual clubs or classes, and it directly sponsors Homecoming, Winter Dance, Field day, and class elections. With emphasis on the student, the officers made plans for a Human Relations Day, on which 500 students from area schools were able to discuss racial problems and prejudices. The Bishop Noll Civil Rights Committee is . result of that day’s work. ■ Homeroom presidents must report accurately so that the whole school is informed of Student Council activities. STUDENT COUNCIL 46 ORGANIZATIONS Issues brought up in Student Council can be important, trivial, funny, or ORGANIZATIONS 47 QUILL SCROLL AND NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY □ Recognition for upperclassmen who combine scholastic achievement with leadership and service to Noll is achieved by membership in the National Honor Society. As the most selective club in the school, N.H.S. membership is the highest honor the school can bestow on a student. Each year, N.H.S. sponsors a book fair and talent show. A bookmobile brings to the students a selection of paperbacks suited to every taste. The variety of talent among the student body is spotlighted at the annual talent show. Early inductions this year gave Seniors the chance to be more active members. Quill and Scroll members have shown outstand¬ ing journalistic achievement on one of the school’s three publica¬ tions: JourNoll, Marquette, and The Beginning. An essay contest open to all interested Noll students is sponsored by this organiza¬ tion. ■ Planning a talent show, book fair and inductions are among N.H.S.’s busy schedule of activities. 48 ORGANIZATIONS NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE AND FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA □ Did you ever wonder if teaching is as simple as it looks, or if it is exciting or boring? The girls in the Future Teachers of America are getting a concrete idea of just exactly what a teacher has to do. They serve as teachers’ aides, have discussions, and listen to guest speakers. FTA members find it valuable to discuss the aims of teaching and to look into all the possibilities and opportunities that are open to a teacher, such as teaching the handicapped, or teaching in the Peace Corps. The members of the National Forensic League made a good showing at the speech and debate meets. Last year, the Seniors displayed outstanding ora¬ torical capabilities. Jim Procter was the state winner in the VFW Oratorical Contest and placed first in the sectional and regional meets. Jim Smith also won first place in the sectional and regional meets and second in the state in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. A1 LaReau was the state winner in the Rotary Club contest. Marnie Ramker was voted into the top ten in extempora¬ neous speech at the Purdue Congress and Mary Niemiec claimed a first in the regional in the humorous division. ■ ORGANIZATIONS 51 An urge to try that impossible problem is fulfilled . . . 52 ORGANIZATIONS MATH CLUB AND SCIENCE CLUB n Members of the Math Seminar get together for slide rule tour¬ neys, demonstrations, and lectures by guest speakers. It prepares students for scholarships and Saturday seminars offered by area colleges. Officers this year are president, Greg O’Drobinak; vice- president, Marcy Polak; secretary, Margit Beckman; and treas¬ urer, Mary Hawkins. The purpose of the Experimental Science Club is to improve scientific knowledge and to help members understand the importance of science in the modern world. The club provides help for any Nollite working on a project who needs equipment, aid, or references. The members are informed of new discoveries in science and they attend seminars at the Field Mu¬ seum and DePaul University. ■ ORGANIZATIONS 53 Happiness for a Freshman is having a Big Sister during mixed-up ordeals of Orientation Day. SEARCHERS, SIGMA KAPPA GAMMA, SINGING GROUP AND BIG SISTERS □ Junior and Senior Searchers meet weekly for Mass, “contact meetings,” and group reunions. The Search is intended to be an aid to teen-agers so that they gain a deeper understanding of Christian maturity in their lives. Writing welcoming letters to incoming freshmen, and helping them become easily acquainted with a new school and new students is the objective of the Big Sister program at Noll. A singing group of seven girls, directed by Mrs. Beil, meets weekly to practice singing modem, folk, and ballad songs. This talented group visits hospitals, orphanages, and performs at Noll’s annual talent show. Primarily a religious organ¬ ization, Sigma Kappa Gamma strives to develop in the Senior girls an awareness of their role as a Christian woman in the modem world. ■ 54 ORGANIZATIONS ORGANIZATIONS 55 □ Local chapters of three national organizations were created so that the business student might be encouraged to seek opportuni¬ ties in the business world, The purpose of Future Secretaries of America is to interest junior and senior girls taking business courses in a career in the secretarial field. Executive secretaries from the area attend the meetings and help the girls obtain a better understanding of the potentials of a secretarial career. The National Business Honor Society is an organization which pro¬ motes scholarship as well as interest in business. Membership in the club provides a means of rating and placement for employ¬ ment while developing student leadership and professional atti¬ tudes. One of the newest clubs at Noll is the Future Business Leaders of America, replacing the former Business Education Club. This organization will attempt to strengthen the confidence of young adults in themselves and their work. ■ FUTURE SECRETARIES OF AMERICA, BUSINESS EDUCATION CLUB AND BUSINESS HONOR SOCIETY “We ought to bring that up at the next meeting. ORGANIZATIONS 57 ACOLYTES AND MISSION CLUB □ They take a‘ collection every week, carry on a correspondence with missionaries from all over the world, make up Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, and organize and direct the Mardi Gras, one of the most involved events of the year. Noll’s Mission Club is a big and busy organization. The membership includes everyone in the school and size calls for organization. Two presidents and two treasurers serve along with two officers from each class. Homeroom representatives attend meetings and make reports. The club aims to make the people of the area and the school aware of the spiritual and material needs of the home and foreign missions. Another club with a great deal of responsibility is the Acolytes. The members serve daily Mass at St. Margaret Mary Church and assist at all the religious functions of the school. ■ Serving Mass is part of the everyday duty of an Acolyte. 58 ORGANIZATIONS AUDIO VISUAL AIDS AND ART CLUB Time, imagination—seeing is believing. □ Through the Audio-Visual Department, the classrooms, audio¬ visual rooms, and auditorium are supplied with instructional equipment. Mr. Thomas Biel supervises the distribution of movie projectors, transparent and opaque overhead projectors, movie screens, tape recorders, record players, and radios to both teachers and students. In the future, it is hoped that the Department will be organized into a club for interested students. Bishop Noll’s Art Club provides an opportunity for creative expression and develop¬ ment of individual talents in the fields of media and technique. Throughout the year, members work on various projects with clay, plaster, charcoal, and water paints. Sponsored by Mrs. Grace Kovach, the Art Club undertakes the responsibility of decorating the showcase and marquee for all the dramatic productions. The Art Club exhibits its own gallery of art at the yearly Mardi Gras festivities with actual demonstrations of various art techniques. The many gala Christmas decorations displayed throughout the school in December are also products of the ingenuity of the Art Club members. ■ m 60 ORGANIZATIONS Volunteer aides serve the faculty by delivering and servicing A.V. equipment. ORGANIZATIONS 61 MEDICAL SERVICE CAREERS □ Setting and clearing plates, serving meals, pouring coffee, and ushering at all school functions are the duties assigned to the 80 members of Noll’s Service Club. Membership in the club is selec¬ tive, based on scholarship and character. Services of the club are not restricted to Noll activities; members devoted their time to the two day teacher’s convention held at Noll in October. The objec¬ tive of the Medical Careers Club is to instill and nourish a lively interest in the health careers. Field trips to hospitals in the area introduce the members to the challenges and responsibilities of the medical profession; speakers specializing in certain areas of medi¬ cine are invited to talk to club members; and overnight stays at various universities and colleges enable the students to tour medi¬ cal and nursing schools. ■ CLUB AND CLUB Planning meetings and projects for the Medical Careers club takes time and imagination. ORGANIZATIONS Service club members work hard at one of the many dinners at Noll. ORGANIZATIONS 63 BAND AND CHORAL □ Choral groups can thrive on the enjoyment derived from their personal love of music and singing, but talent and time devoted to practice call for the reward of a good performance. The Nollaires, Noll’s performing group, sings at area and parish events. In the NISBOVA music contest they were awarded first place. The ad¬ vanced choral, or concert choral, is a large group of girls from all four classes that performs on request, particularly at Noll pro¬ grams. The mixed chorus is comprised of boys and girls from all classes. Sister Julien directs these talented groups. Edward De- Lorenzo directs the glee club, organized for the boys at Noll. Under the leadership of Michael Hennessy, the band plays at school programs and the small pep band is a welcome addition to games and pep rallies. Dance and show bands are directed by Ronald Buczek. ■ ORGANIZATIONS 65 SPANISH CLUB FRENCH CLUB AND LATIN CLUB □ At the Latin Club’s Saturnalia banquet, ancient Rome came alive with chariot races, slaves, togas and laurel wreaths. The club presents displays and posters to show the use of Latin. Along with the other language clubs, it brought the New Colony Six to a sock hop. The Spanish Club’s aim is to increase interest in the language and to establish better relations between American Span¬ ish students and Spanish-speaking people interested in English. The main objective, this year, was to develop a program for send¬ ing a Spanish student from Noll to a Spanish speaking country. Thus, the club has geared all of its activities toward raising the necessary money to achieve this goal. By arranging visits to mu¬ seums and by sponsoring French plays, the French Club hopes to increase understanding of French culture and its effects on Ameri¬ can life. The Club is also planning a soiree, or party, to raise funds for a student exchange program with France. ■ Poster-filled bulletin boards show that the language clubs are busy. ORGANIZATIONS 67 Reserve cheerleaders capture the spirit of the crowd with their enthusiastic smiles. 68 ORGANIZATIONS □ Three clubs were created to instill and uphold school spirit, athletic enthusiasm, and good sportsmanship into the student body. Lettermen who have earned letters on the gridiron, court, diamond, and in the pool comprise the membership of the Mono¬ gram Club. These boys help lead cheers, monitor pep assemblies, and encourage the student body to support the athletic teams. Six varsity cheerleaders and three B-team cheerleaders promote school spirit and act as ambassadors for good relationships be¬ tween schools during all athletic events. These girls are selected by a panel of judges on ability and appearance. Being a cheerleader entitles a girl to attend a summer camp, where, along with cheer¬ leaders from other schools, old cheers are practiced and improved, and new cheers are invented. ■ MONOGRAM CLUB CHEERLEADERS AND BOOSTER CLUB ORGANIZATIONS 69 MONOGRAM CLUB CHEERLEADERS AND BOOSTER CLUB □ Booster Club members sing victory into the hearts of every Noll supporter with their fine showing at the regular season varsity basketball games and sectional tournaments. Originally, their schedule included only home basketball games, but they were such a success that transportation is now provided so they can attend most away games. The Yell Block follows the lead of the cheer¬ leaders, yet unique effects are achieved with their blue and gold vests, various letter formations, and swaying left and right. It is the remarkable precision with which they perform that makes the Booster Yell Block so exceptional. From the hearty reception received from both students and athletes, the Booster Yell Block has found that the way to the winning morale of a team is through the spirit of its supporters. ■ ORGANIZATIONS 71 CHESS CLUB AND RADIO CLUB □ Some of the diversity in the interests of Noll students is evi¬ dent in the Amateur Radio Club and the Chess Club. The Ama¬ teur Radio Club strives to have its members licensed as ham radio operators. Aided by their sponsor, Mr. Danielides and technical advisor, Br. Leo, the members are preparing themselves for a test in code practice and theory which will qualify them for a ham operator’s license. They hope to establish their own radio station within the school. The Chess Club demands skill, imagination, and alertness from its members. Besides being an enjoyable pastime, Chess also trains the mind to plan ahead and it encourages a spirit of competition. Fr. Mantel, the Chess Club sponsor, helps the members set up schedules for Chess tournaments within the school. This year, for the first time since its beginning, the Noll Chess Club will be involved in an inter-school Chess tournament, hoping to gain greater recognition for their skill in the Calumet region. ■ 72 ORGANIZATIONS With effort and determination, the Warriors are ready to fight. FOOTBALL □ Bishop Noll’s new coach, Bob Wilbur, and his staff of assistants: Dick Barry, George Wilson, and George Staurha, were faced with the- task of molding a young and inexperienced ball club into a seasoned squad that was committed to a sched¬ ule which included two of the state’s top 10 teams. The Warriors played a credita¬ ble and determined brand of football against both Hammond Morton and East Chicago Washington in spite of the fact that they lost both games. Against Whit¬ ing, Bishop Noll enjoyed a resounding victory, only to go down to defeat against Calumet Township by a score of 12-7. The Warriors rebounded the following week by trouncing Hammond Tech, 28-12. Their record for the season was 6 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Much of the team’s success was due to the ability of its fine co¬ captains: Tom Czechanski, Dennis Schiedt, and Harry Pilotto. ATHLETICS 79 □ Bishop Noll Warriors, under the direction of Head Coach, Bob Wilbur, ended a successful 6-3-1 football season by defeating Hammond Tech sou ndly by a score of 28-12. Bishop Noll lost to Hammond Morton, 14-7. However, the team came within seconds of tying their opponents, with a drive that ended on the 1 yard line as the final gun sounded. Following this disappointing loss, the Warriors went on to defeat the next three opponents before losing to the 5th ranked Washington Sena¬ tors, 14-13 in the Homecoming game. The team consistently displayed fortitude, desire, and ability during the football season. The running of Tom Czechanski and Dennis Scheidt highlighted the offensive attack and Harry Pilotto and Frank Theo¬ bald sparked the defensive action. The play of the Juniors and Sophomores indi¬ cates promise for the varsity next year. Coach Wilbur, states that a winning team demands the best in each player. Richmond High School has replaced St. Francis de Sales in next year’s schedule. The line-up of opponents precludes that the team must perform at least as good as this year if they expect to enjoy another winning season. ■ FOOTBALL □ B.N.I.’s Warriors concluded their basketball season with a BASKETBALL fairly respectable 8 wins and 9 losses. Successive losses to Hammond Tech, La Porte, and Morton had all of the earmarks of a poor season ahead. However, the Warriors quickly bounced back by defeating the defending Illinois State Champions, Thorn¬ ton of Harvey 61 to 57, only to fall victims once again to South Bend Washington and Chicago De La Salle. The Warriors pos¬ sessed a record of 1 win and 5 losses for the first half of the season. Coach Dermody stated that injuries and inexperience were the chief reasons for the team’s slow start. He also stated that he expected the team to improve considerably as the season pro¬ gressed. ■ Ken Burg, center on the Junior Varsity, jumps up for the rebound. Another loss to Gary Tolleston followed. Suddenly, the Warriors came of age by defeating Calumet, Merrilville, Gavit, Whiting, and Gary Lew Wallace. The Warriors finished the season with a loss to Griffith, followed by a win over St. Francis De Sales, and finally a loss to highly touted Gary Roosevelt. Captain Tim Chiappini and Dale Dust will graduate. However, the future looks promising with a team built around guards Terry Quinn and Denny Henson, forwards Jim Madryk, Dave Adamczyk and Dave Knish, and board men Mike O’Meara, 6 ' 7 , Mike Magziarz, 6 ' 5 , and Stan Krol 6 ' 5 . ■ 84 ATHLETICS WRESTLING □ With a 7-5-1 record, the Wrestling Warriors finished the best season in the short history of the sport at Noll. One of the season’s highlights was the 33-11 victory over previously undefeated Mor¬ ton High School. Other notable victories included the Clark meet, 41-3, and the wins over Gary Tolleston, 37-12, and Hammond Tech, 38-8. Topping the season, the Warriors were crowned Sec ¬ tional Champs in competition with eleven other schools. In the sectionals seven matmen placed either first, second, or third: Joe Sutka took second, Chuck Kurella, first, Bob Murauwski, second, Larry Cummings, third, Mark Sargent, third, Ray Laska, second, and Keith Kremer, second. In the regionals Chuck Kurella took second. Remaining weight classes were filled by seniors, Greg Furman, Frank Kowalski, Pat Dixon, and Frank Lowery. ■ Frank Kowalski, in the referee’s position, gets set for the breakdown. 86 ATHLETICS SWIMMING □ The Warrior swim team has gained respect throughout the state. This year on their way to posting a 9 win 6 loss record the Warriors broke previous school records. Paul Austgen changed the record board in the Individual Medley covering the meter course in 2:51.3. Steve Drozda, distance man, set a 5:06.8 standard for 400 meters freestyle. The swimmers capped their season finishing third in the Griffith sectional. In doing so, they picked up 18 ribbons, and state berths in three events. Rich Ramker went on to pick up Noll’s first point and medal in state championship swim¬ ming. Filling out the remainder of the varsity rooster were stand¬ out seniors: Mel Justak, Mark Lefore in breaststroke, A1 Kozlow- ski, Glenn Miller, Tom Witt in freestyle, and butterflyers, Danny Santiago and Rich Simaga. Through the continued leadership and fine coaching of Mr. Gary Lutker, the Warrior Tankmen look great for ’68. ■ 88 ATHLETICS John Kieras should lead the ' 67 golf squad to another Hammond City Crown. 90 ATHLETICS Rusty Kochis lost medalist honors by one stroke. □ In 1966, the golf team had an enviable record of 16 wins out of a total of 22 matches. Under the guidance and direction of Karl Huffine, the squad showed that they had the ability to overcome some of the more competitive teams in the region. The final team veterans were Rusty Kochis, Don Cvitkovich, Ken Cook, and Wally Tatara. Although James Hanson played with the team only one year, he proved himself to be a valuable asset. Rusty Kochis lost a chance to receive a medal in the Hammond City Tournament when he lost to his opponent by one stroke. For the second time in the history of golf at Noll, the team won the Hammond City Golf Championship. Frank Sullivan will be the new golf coach for the ’67 season. John Kieras, a junior, received a medal in the Hammond Times Junior Tournament during the summer of 1966 and should prove to be the leader of the ’67 linksmen. ■ GOLF ATHLETICS 91 □ With a respectable record of 14 wins and 7 losses, the Varsity Baseball team ended the season in the “well-played” bracket for 1966. Under the guidance of Robert Bradtke, varsity coach, and Dave Talabay, reserve coach, the team played together as one to eliminate some of the “better” teams in the area. Some of the highlights of the season were: Tom Czechanski’s one hitter against Thorton Fractional North, John Luberda’s home run against St. Francis de Sales in the bottom of the 7th to break a 2-2 deadlock, Jeff Swedran’s one-hitter against Providence High, and John Govert’s 10 inning no-hitter against Hammond High. Outstanding team players were: Tom Czechanski, pitcher and two year letter winner, Tom Janovsky, first baseman, and Tim Chiappini, third baseman. The nucleus of the ’67 team will be built around veter¬ ans Dan Quinn, outfielder, Terry Quinn, catcher, John Racich, pitcher, and Walter Verbish, catcher. ■ BASEBALL Baseball players engage in pre¬ game batting practice. 92 ATHLETICS ATHLETICS 93 Practice is held under Bob Bradtke’s watchful eye. TRACK Practicing their timing on the low hurdles are Les Wolf, Mark Furman and Ron Wojno. Furman and Steve Kowal break out of the starting blocks. □ Led by junior miler Terry Glogowski, senior half-miler Bill Liesch, and senior 440’er Mark Furman, the Tracksters combined an indoor-outdoor season record of 15 wins and 7 losses. Sprinters Larry Grambo, Chuck Schafer and Tom Adamczyk sparkled. Rich Sobolewski and Jeff Ranta put the shot. Two Noll track records were broken. Terry Glogowski set a mile record of 4:31:2. Rich Sobolewski flung the shot 53 feet even. The Noll men did well in relays, garnering fourth in the Andrean relays, fourth in the Hobart relays, first in the Clark freshman-sophomore relays, and second in the Hammond City relays. ’67 appears to be a track year for Noll. While the team seems to be weak in the field events, they should be strong in the running and relay events. Bill Archer, Rich Furjanic, Bob Wilbur and Dennis Biscan coach the Track¬ men. ■ 94 ATHLETICS □ Bishop Noll has the distinction of being the first school in the Calumet area to field a soccer team. Most of the activity was centered around exhibition games. A temporary soccer field was laid out parallel to building A and the fieldhouse parking lot. Coach, George Constantopoulos, stated that he was favorably im¬ pressed with the performance of the novice squad. Future plans include inter-school competition. Coach, Bill Archer, arranged a meet with every cross country team he could fit on the Noll sched¬ ule. The team finished the season with a record of 8 wins and 5 losses. Some of the more noteworthy team accomplishments were: a first in the freshman city meet, second in the frosh-soph Tri-Cky meet, and a third in the Andrean Invitational. A school record for the two mile run was broken by junior, Terry Glogowski at 9:55. Young Dick Meisterling, Don Savage, and Jim Haney will run the route for Noll in ’67 and should improve our showing. ■ CROSS COUNTRY AND SOCCER ATHLETICS 97 □ Members of Bishop Noll Institute’s Religion Department have RELIGION taken steps to help their students to bridge the gap between reli¬ gion and life. Religion students probe into many of today’s vital and interesting issues that affect the country, and try to arrive at a Christian viewpoint toward these problems and events. Teachers discuss changes in the liturgy and other innovations with their students to keep them well informed and up-to-date on the current affairs of the modern Church. Various questions concerning mod¬ em Christian life and teen problems are investigated during reli¬ gion class. The students hold frank and open discussions on topics such as: morality, dating, sin, and knowledge of oneself. The classroom activities are designed to motivate students to become personally involved in their religion insofar as it pertains to inter¬ action in society. ■ Religion students represent their lives in a collage. CURRICULUM 99 ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE □ Noll’s English Department aims to enrich the student’s knowl¬ edge gained in the classroom. More speech electives have been added to the curriculum this year. For the second year, the De¬ partment will sponsor a Drama Festival. Students are given an opportunity to participate in dramatic productions as members of the cast or crew, and as student directors. Lectures accompany the plays which explain various types of drama and techniques of the theater. A circulating paperback library helps the students’ study of the novel and encourages them to read. This year, the Depart¬ ment plans to initiate a film study program. In the Spanish and French Departments, grammar is emphasized the first year and the ability to converse in the language is the goal for the second year. Textbook lessons are supplemented by the use of the lan¬ guage labs. ■ Seniors break up into independent study groups in Mr. Nelson ' s English class. CURRICULUM 101 SOCIAL SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE □ United States history, world history, economics, modem European history, government, sociology and geography are the subjects taught at Noll under the Social Studies Department. The nineteen teachers in this department supplement the regular text¬ book lessons and classroom discussions by presenting the students with films dealing with topics being discussed, and by obtaining outside speakers from the area. Each year, the department strives to: make the students aware of the political and social situations, as they really are, in their own particular region; help the students understand the present social and economic issues; make the stu¬ dents conscious of their responsibilities to the people and their needs, in their own area; and help the students to think independ¬ ently. These aims are aptly summed up by Sr. Maria, the head of the Department, who said that the main objective of the social studies courses is to help the student to “understand not only the nation, but the world.” ■ Students develop an ability to discuss world problems intelligently. 102 CURRICULUM Social knowledge of the past and present leads to personal insight. CURRICULUM 103 Men and Nations A World j History WITH 1944 SUPPLEMENT 104 CURRICULUM Filing, typing, adding, writing . . . □ Extensive training for a good position in the modem business world is given to Bishop Noll’s students through the Business Ed¬ ucation Department. By offering the girls courses such as typing, Shorthand I and II, bookkeeping, and record keeping. The depart¬ ment hopes to promote understanding of the business needs of today, and to train better secretaries. Not only do the boys take valuable training in areas such as business mathematics, business law, and salesmanship, but they also have the opportunity to in¬ vest in inexpensive stocks and thus gain first-hand business experi¬ ence. Sister Ivan, the head of the Business Education Department, provides her students with the opportunity to further their insight into modern business techniques. The students print up the daily attendance bulletin and make tapes and ditto copies of material for teachers. Thus, service is an important part of the business students’ regular classes. ■ BUSINESS EDUCATION CURRICULUM 105 Art study stimulates imagination and allows experimentation with ability. 106 CURRICULUM □ Advanced choral and music appreciation are offered at Noll through the Music Department. Students in the chorus develop their voices by singing a variety of songs in several parts. Through music appreciation the students gain an insight into the history of music, and a better understanding of musical composers and their masterpieces. The band provides an opportunity for talented Nol- lites to exhibit their musical ability as each member gains knowl¬ edge of musical techniques and composition. This year, band is a part of the school curriculum. Art appreciation courses introduce students to the development of art from ancient to modern times. In studio art the students have an opportunity for practical appli¬ cation of their creative expression. ■ of ' J ' 10 oQ CURRICULUM 107 INDUSTRIAL AND □ Bishop Noll provides education in industrial arts through its mechanical drawing courses. Mechanical drawing is the graphic HOME ARTS representation of an object or anything that can be built. There¬ fore, training in this art provides a good basis for all engineering courses and it is vital in occupations such as plumbing and archi¬ tecture. Training in mechanical drawing includes teaching the stu¬ dent to draw objects perspectively in various positions, measuring lines and angles accurately. The students also learn many types of lettering, which helps them to gain better control of their hands. Cooking and sewing are the home arts courses offered by B.N.I. These subjects provide an excellent preparation for modern do¬ mestic life. In the foods preparation classes the students learn how to plan, prepare, and serve breakfasts, dinners, and luncheons. Students in the sewing classes first learn to make simple things such as place mats and aprons. Later, through the use of patterns, they create dresses, blouses, and even evening gowns. ■ Industrial and Home Arts courses prepare students for profitable careers. L 108 CURRICULUM Modern machines and methods make sewing not only creative but practical. CURRICULUM 109 Working out on parallel bars and tumbling on mats helps to strengthen muscles and to develop coordination. CURRICULUM 1 1 1 PHYSICAL EDUCATION □ Helping all students to attain a higher degree of fitness has been the objective of the Physical Education Department this year. The instructors choose exercises that will, if they are faith¬ fully and regularly performed, help the student to become more agile. Swimming is a must for a good physical education program. The students are divided, according to swimming groups. Each group then swims for a six weeks period, which allows enough time for the necessary instructions to be given. In the gym classes, students perform the regular calisthenics and participate in a gymnastic program. Participation in sports such as baseball, bas¬ ketball, and kickball is also part of the gym curriculum. All phases of the physical education program help to prepare the students for a healthy and more active life. ■ MATHEMATICS □ By offering a wide variety of courses and projects. Bishop Noll’s Mathematics Department aims to provide its students with a good Mathematical background. Each year, the Math Depart¬ ment sponsors the Eighth Grade Math Tournament. To enrich the students’ understanding of their regular lessons, the Department employs a number of useful aids. Plastic models make it easier and much more interesting to learn three-dimensional geometry. Overhead projectors lend new meaning and clarity to the teachers’ explanations, and they have also replaced the blackboard as a means for the students’ expression and demonstrations. Students may now refer to a new and excellent set of reference books for outside help or to satisfy an inquiring mind. To further under¬ standing and interest during the year, there are clubs such as the Sophomore Seminar, and in the summer, a fascinating Mathemat¬ ics workshop. ■ 69 ♦ ft Demonstrating a problem on the board helps to clarify problem solving for math students. 1 12 CURRICULUM □ Some striking changes in the Biology labs have been made this yea r. Biology is the study of life and this year living things were brought into the classroom. Cultures of microscopic life were pre¬ sent throughout the “living labs” along with a menagerie of ani¬ mals. This permitted the students to enjoy such biological com¬ pany as white rats, paramecium, rabbits, and even Venus fly¬ traps. This year there has been a greater opportunity for individ¬ ual student experimentation with original experiments performed and devised by the students themselves. Thus, the emphasis was on helping the students to think, act, and react scientifically. Chemistry and Physics are the more advanced Science courses offered to Bishop Noll’s upperclassmen. A series of about thirteen films, presented to the Chemistry students, supplemented the regu¬ lar textbook lessons. Entries made by Noll’s students in the Pur¬ due Science Fair exemplified their acute interest in science studies. New lab equipment in both the Chemistry and Physics Depart¬ ments, lent a deeper understanding to these courses, which are the bases of medical and engineering careers. ■ Learning lab techniques gives students added insight into scientific methods. As Sophomores they were more confident and more interested. They remember, as Juniors, the new responsibilities of decorating for Homecoming and Prom, a whirl of activities, plays, and a successful caroling party. This class will never forget the student council elections nor Br. Leonard’s letter to the editor. The Seniors remember unity day, Homecoming, the snowstorm, Prom, and Senior class play, Twelfth Night and Bernie’s pants, the last games, and teachers who made a difference. All mixed up with future dreams, college, jobs, tests, and interviews are thoughts of friends, Civil Rights, Vietnam, the draft, the love of another, and the search for God. ■ One of Pat Krizman’s most important activities was the vice presidency of the senior class. HONORS AWARDS 199 ADMINISTRATION □ Administrative duties at Noll are not limited to establishing and maintaining order within the school. There is recognition of the more notable influence an administration may have on the students. The student and his problems, needs, and opinions are recognized. Brother I. Conrad, superintendent at Noll, terminated a six year residence in January. Noll welcomed Brother Paul, formerly associated with Lewis College, as the new superintend¬ ent. Administration of a large school like Noll is a challenge and requires organization. The two main departments in the school are headed by Sister Alma Clare, principal of the girls’ division, and Brother Stephen, principal of the boys’ division. Assisting Sis¬ ter Alma Clare is Sister Mary Marcian who works with her to achieve enthusiasm, unity, and co-operation from the students. ■ 200 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY 202 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY ADMINISTRATION □ KEITH SMITH, M.A., Ball State University, Adminis¬ trative Staff, attendance and discipline, four years at Noll 2.
