L4i ' i BISHOP NOLL INSTITttJTE HAMMOND, INDIANA • 1963 • MARQUETTE FOREWORD Y T) “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...” is a most suitable description of the revolutionary change now taking place at Bishop Noll. At this moment we are a part of a thrust of advancement; we are in the midst of progress. We can hear it, see it, feel it with the vibration that rings with each stroke of the hammer, each roar of the crane. Certainly, though, it is a most trying time for all. These sounds, signs of progress, are at times deafening. Inconvenience is the consistent fare of Noll life. Conditions are crowded, facilities limited, but from these arise a new spirit—the spirit of enduring patience, Christian love, and willing sacrifice combined. We, the Marquette Staff of 1963, have tried to depict both sides of a student’s life here, from the dusty window sills in the rooms to the animated faces of the teachers who enliven the courses they teach. We hope we have given you a lasting remembrance, a cherished memory. -f y ce, . • , 3 3113 02929 9866 .E OF CONTENTS Campus life 8 ADMINISTRATION 28 ATHLETICS 44 ORGANIZATIONS 62 UNDERGRADUATES 84 GRADUATES 120 AWARDS 148 CEREMONIES INITIATE CONSTRUCTION nil QTR EXPANSION BEGINS . ffy Growth: this is the keynote of our life this year at Bishop Noll. All around us this great process is appar¬ ent. When the dust finally clears, however, we will have gained new residences for our religious faculty, theater facilities, a library equipped with an audio-vis¬ ual section, and a cafeteria. Standing out from all of these structures, already near completion, is the im¬ pressive field house, which will eventually accommodate 7,000 persons. The construction at Noll symbolizes a new era for the Institute, one in which it will continue to maintain high standards and begin to be second to none in the excellence of its facilities. Growth in buildings will be paralleled by growth in academic excellence. V tf oT V r ff CAMPUS LIFE MAY CROWNING SPIRITS GLOW Carrying on one of Noll’s most beautiful traditions in spite of construction, which made the grotto inaccessible, Virginia Ga- brish, last year’s May Queen, crowned Our Lady of the Cam¬ pus. Special guest of the day was our Most Reverend Bishop, Andrew G. Grutka, who ad¬ dressed the assembled student body on devotion to Mary. Mary Kay Burke, Maryann Matolin 10 Kenny Gibney, Paul Schreiner, Dave Croner CARNIVAL ENTERPRISING STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS Anita Gemignani, Sharon Vasilko Jack Balousek, Janet Duhon On April 29, 1962, the Penny Carnival, inspired and guided by Father Lukac, took place here at Noll. Once they caught Father’s festive spirit, the stu¬ dents worked hard to make the carnival a success; each home¬ room sponsored its own project. The carnival reached its cli¬ max late in the evening with the crowning of the king and queen, Peter Bonaventura and Camille Raczkowski, elected by penny votes cast by their fellow stu¬ dents. The amount collected, over $4,000.00, was the students’ contribution to the fund drive for the construction program. Paula Peres 13 According to the rules of the IHSAA . . . FACULTY-MONOGRAM GAME Teachers tally. FACULTY SNEAKS BY THE MONOGRAM CLUB Fr. Sedlak proved unstoppable. Unfortunately, the “Monstrous Monogram” succumbed to the powerful force exerted by the “Ferocious Faculty.” Although the game was close and hard all the way, the fac¬ ulty emerged victorious by a score of 49-46. The youth and force of the Monogram Club failed to withstand the experience and mature judgements of the fac¬ ulty. College and career night, a school sponsored event, is presented to give jun¬ iors and seniors a chance to select a college or career by meeting and talking with delegated representatives. This year students were able to name their first and second choice colleges in advance so that they could spend the first part of the evening with representatives from those schools. During the remainder of the night students and their parents were welcomed to visit any of the other col¬ leges or careers represented. COLLEGE AND CAREER NIGHT WE LEARN ABOUT OUR FUTURE 15 JUNIOR - SENIOR PROM A NIGHT ALWAYS TO BE Ken Strnatka, Barbara Zipko, Ann Marie Ki- raly, Tom Puplava, Hal Scherer, Marilou Walsko Nancy Calderone, Ron Kovach 16 REMEMBERED Mike Renehan, Julienne Brotko, Ben Gonzalez, Pam Smith It was May 18th and many students eagerly awaited the social highlight of the school year, the Junior-Senior Prom. It was a beautiful night, as if Fate had smiled and commanded Nature to re¬ spond with clear skies and a bright moon. Arriving at St. Thomas More Hall in Munster at 9:00, the juniors and seniors danced to the wonderful music of the Buddy Presner Orchestra. Carrying out the theme of the ball, “A Southern Place,” the juniors had transformed the hall into a beautiful Southern mansion. It was nearly midnight by the time the grand march, led by the king and queen, Ron Kovach and Nancy Calderone, had been completed, but the night was still young. Johnny Valentine, along with an excellent supporting cast, provided enter¬ tainment at Teibel’s until 3:30. It was a night always to be remembered, but one entirely too short. 17 We had no place to assemble for our parade or skit; the Moose Lodge generously donated their grounds. In addition it rained, threatening the skit and postpon¬ ing the game. Despite these circumstances, spirited Nollites managed to carry out traditions and win the game. The same incessant rain caused the Homecoming dance, “Fifth Quarter Fantasy,” to be held before the victory. Reigning over the festivities were John Przy- byl, “Mr. Touchdown,” and the vivacious queen, Bev Wohadlo. 18 FOR NOLL INSTITUTE Elonka Kozare, Dan Engleton s ' sK h Nancy Nau, Bob Weber, Nikki Mirenich, Betty Pudlo, Ricky Powell, John Przybyl, Bev Wohadlo, Bonnie Aragon WINTER FORMAL CRYSTAL BALL ENLIVENS SEASON Dianne Grzywana, Tom Burke. From the first casting to the final curtain call, the students worked unceasingly, both on stage and behind the scenes; together they prayed a Memorare for the success of each performance and a prayer of thanksgiving as each success passed. Only the total co-operation of all con¬ cerned, under the direction of Srs. Although Tup¬ tim is to become one of the king’s wives, she is deeply in love with Lun Tha (Dave Burdelak). Angeline, Mrs. Kubeck, and Mr. De- meduk. RETREAT BACCALAUREATE WE MUST RETREAT IN ORDER TO 26 PROGRESS The religious aspect of Noll’s life is evident in two of its annual events: retreat and Baccalau¬ reate Mass. The annual retreat offers us a time each year to turn from our daily responsibilities and devote our attention to the perfection of our spirituality. Just as retreat strengthens us. Baccalaureate reminds us of the new impending responsibility that looms ahead. At their last Mass together, the Senior Class prays individually for themselves and their friends, that they may have guidance in the uncertain, difficult future. Noll prepares its students for life the best way: the spiritual way. ADMINISTRATION ANDREW G. GRUTKA, D.D., Bishop of Gary ADMINISTRATION NEW SCHOOL MERITS NEW ADMINISTRATION This year Br. K. Daniel, Principal of the Boys, and Sister M. Alma Clare, Principal of the Girls, under the supervision of Br. I. Conrad, have combined their ef¬ forts to provide Bishop Noll with an efficient and pro¬ ductive administrative staff. Perhaps the greatest contribution our administration has made to the well-being of the school is the tremen¬ dous order achieved out of the chaos and confusion ex¬ isting in the student body at the beginning of the year. They have brought students to realize that conditions must change and adjustments must be made in order to bring about the creation of a better Bishop Noll. 30 BROTHER I. These clubs have a common goal: to promote a spirit of co-operation among faculty members, students, and parents. Each club sponsors separate fund raising projects, and donates the proceeds from these activities to the school. The Mothers’ Club holds card parties and raffles an¬ nually; it also sponsors the Senior Baccalaureate Break¬ fast. Among the activities of the Fathers’ Club are bingos, an annual smoker, the Athletic Banquet, and the Pancake Breakfast. 43 ATHLETICS GOLF TEAM CAPTURES CITY CHAMPIONSHIP Richard Rocky, Louis Hevezi, Tim Leslie, Bob Baran, Dan Parker, Coach Huffine Led by the low scoring of Bob Baran and Tim Leslie, the Noll golf team proved to be one of the best ever seen in the state. Coach Karl Huffine’s boys captured the City Championship by the impressive total of twenty-six strokes. In¬ diana J.C. Champion Leslie, and Baran, individual city champion and medalist, were supported in fine style by the out¬ standing shooting of Louis Hevezi, Dan Parker, and Richard Rocky. Richard Rocky Dennis Muvich, Jerry LaReau TRACK ALACRITY SPURS THEM TO VICTORY Deprived of many facilities by the burning of the gym, the thinclads of Coach John Quinn demonstrated a fine spirit during the 1962 track season. Leading the team as individual stars were Dennis Muvich and Mike Allegretti, who almost dethroned Bernard Rivers as sec¬ tional winner of the 100 yard dash. The exciting relay team, consisting of Dan Engleton, Dennis Muvich, Greg Kissela, and Frank Schilling, proved to be one of the finest in the Calumet Re¬ gion—long producer of the best track teams in the state. REVIVES ATHLETIC SPIRIT Mike McGill, John Stok The baseball Warriors of ’61- 62 settled for six wins and ten losses. Robert Bradtke will as¬ sume the coaching duties va¬ cated by Tom Burkhart. This year’s team should improve on last year’s record. Bradtke will depend heavily on strong pitch¬ ing from Herb Rueth and Dave Falda. 49 VARSITY FOOTBALL CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT . . . TEAM’S CHIEF CHARACTERISE The football squad of the Bishop Noll War¬ riors, guided by their new head coach, John Quinn, had many obstacles facing them at the offset of the season. The athletic staff had lost four key members from 1961-1962, and the toughest schedule in the state loomed before the eager team. The season started with losses to two powers of the Northern Indiana Conference, LaPorte on September 1, and Hammond High on September 8, by the respective scores of 44-6 and 21-6. Indianapolis Cathedral a perennial grid power, chilled the Warriors 34-0. After losing a heart- breaker to homecoming-inspired Gary Roosevelt, Noll played the Governors from Morton. This was the fourth opponent which was destined to finish in the top ten. The team from Hammond preserved a hard fought Homecoming victory by the margin of one point. Following a sixth straight defeat, suffered at the hands of South Bend St. Joseph, the rugged Warriors won their initial and Homecoming game from De LaSalle, 32-0. The final two games of the season saw Noll run wild over the highly respected Whiting team and the Meteors from T.F. North. 50 ROW ONE: Dan O’Keef, Coach Weger, Dave Kra- jewski, Ron Miller, Dan Detzner, Ron Kozlowski, John Przybyl, Tim Mertz, Jerry LaReau, Jim Cziperle, Carl Weger, Coach Quinn. Both Coach Demeduk, in his first season in that position, and varsity Coach Quinn were very enthusiastic about the material that showed up for the grueling prac¬ tices. The team’s sophomore ability was occa¬ sionally supplemented with the experience of the juniors. Last year this group was known for its spirit and hustle; followers of the Warriors hope that the reserves can continue their good play and help the ’64 team to nothing short of a state championship. 54 Opponent Under the capable leadership of Coach Bradtke, the “B” team battled its way to a representative 7-11 record. Because this outfit, like all recent Noll teams, was characterized by its lack of height, aggressive floor play and slick ball handling were the chief of¬ fensive tools. Mr. Bradtke was a newcomer on the coaching scene this year, but he is no stranger to Warrior fans. A former all-state guard, he led Noll teams during the golden years, 1955-1956. He is greatly interested in quick reacting Jerry King, one of the few players who have played varsity ball during their sophomore year. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY QUILL AND SCROLL SOCIETY OUTSTANDIN Another national organization of which Bishop Noll has a chapter is the National Honor Society. New members, chosen on the basis of rank in class and social contributions made to the school, are inducted twice a year: after the first semester for new senior members, and in May for juniors. Underclassmen may be admitted on a probationary basis. Activities, such as a Book Fair and trips to Chicago for cultural events, are sponsored under the direction of Sr. Christopher Marie, and are usually opened to the student body in an effort to promote enthusiasm for scholarship and development of character. 64 Bishop Noll’s chapter of the Interna¬ tional Honorary Society for High School Journalists, the Quill and Scroll, was re¬ cently reorganized under Sr. Georgia. Members of the organization, limited to juniors and seniors, must fulfill many requirements, such as ranking in the up¬ per third of their class, having the rec¬ ommendation of the co-sponsors, Mr. Ronald Partyka and Sr. Georgia, and having contributed work of superior ability to major school publications. Then the members must be approved by the national chairman. The Joyce Kilmer Chapter has tried to award students for their work and to stimulate interest in high school jour¬ nalism by inviting speakers, such as Sr. Madeleva to the meetings. Activities of the group, intended to promote co¬ operation between student and faculty and be¬ tween student and student, included the Winter Formal, an annual spring dance, and Field Day activities. Composed of student-elected officers and rep¬ resentatives, and sponsored by Fr. Joseph Sed¬ lak, the organization is the student government of the school. Next year it will have its own Student Government Room in which to hold meetings. 66 Under the sponsorship of Miss Kath¬ erine O’Connor, the Bishop Noll branch of the National Forensic League, better known as the Debate Club, has become a prominent and successful organization. Membership is open to sophomores, jun¬ iors, and seniors who rank in the upper fourth of their class. Activities consist of weekly debates with surrounding high schools and par¬ ticipation in various speech meets held by area service clubs. A year of transition at Noll was ap¬ propriately marked by a change of name in the school newspaper, the JourNoll. Formerly known as the Warrior, the JourNoll is published by the junior and senior members of the journalism class. This year’s newsroom was located in the convent basement. Here, shut away from the world, in deep concentration, staff members wrote stories, checked copy, made page plans, and produced is¬ sues of news and features. The paper, which is published month¬ ly, is a member of the NSPA and the CSPA, accrediting associations. Sr. Geor¬ gia is the faculty advisor. The highlight of the year for the stu¬ dent journalists was a trip to Milwaukee for the National Catholic Press Confer¬ ence, November 9-11. The 1963 Marquette Staff, ably di¬ rected by Mr. Ronald Partyka, has been vested with the largest and most com¬ plex student undertaking at Noll. The seniors, juniors, and sophomores who are on the staff began in April of 1962 and continued to work throughout the summer months. The photographic services of Root Studios of Chicago have added a definite professional quality to the book. Con¬ taining many innovations, this year’s book, modern in design and unique in style, will set a high standard for its suc¬ cessors. Under the direction of Br. K. Daniel, its purpose is to assist students who have indicated a desire to improve their work. The members of the club must be superior students who are ca¬ pable of helping others who have certain difficulties. It is the wish of the entire faculty that this club will succeed in raising the intellectual standards of Bish¬ op Noll Institute. 73 Julie Della Santina, Vice-President; Noreen Kolanko, Co-Prefect; Pat Popa, Secretary; Bev¬ erly Cieslak, Representative; Dave Burdelak, Treasurer; Charlie Niblick, Co-Prefect. C.S.M.C. C.S.M.C. PROMOTES WORLD CENTERED THINKING A sympathetic study of the African situation is one good example of the work that the C.S.M.C. has been trying to accomplish: teaching others of the needs of the world. Dedicated to helping the missions of the world, the group, sponsored by Sr. M. Vincent Ferrer, annually conducts a stamp drive during January, the proceeds of which are sent to the missions. The club also sponsors the work of four Nollites in Mexico during the sum¬ mer. Not forgetting the home mission field, the C.S.M.C. encourages student cate¬ chists and promotes the annual Christ¬ mas basket drive. This year representatives attended the yearly convention held at Notre Dame. 74 Through the combined efforts of Sr. M. Faith and Dennis Streveler, the In¬ ternational Tape Club has sent tapes to such countries as Norway, Pakistan, and Brazil, creating better world relations and informing other countries of the American way of living. Scripts contain¬ ing questions and answers on our coun¬ try take from five to six hours to com¬ pose and are divided into categories, each section distinguished by its particular theme song. INTERNATIONAL TAPE CLUB TAPE CLUB PROMOTES AMERICANISM ABROAD ROW ONE: Marilyn Przybyl. Marianne Spisak, Rozann Skozen. Sr. Faith, Elizabeth Cracium. ROW TWO: Kathy Miller, Pamela Korak, Dennis Streveler, Cyn¬ thia Buzinski, Teri Perz. ROW THREE: Andrea Pi- ekarczyk, Mark Koslow, Robert Cardis. BI-PHY-CHEM SCIENCE CLUB REORGANIZES From frogs to fish to filters: this is the range of interests of the Bi-Phy-Chem. Recently re¬ organized under the chairman¬ ship of Gregory Kwasny and the sponsorship of Mrs. Michielsen, the group this year presented a science fair in connection with Andrean High School, in which they visually displayed their keen interest in the experimental sci¬ ences which the club promotes. Adrienne Rastovsky, Secretary-Treasurer; Greg Kwasny, Chairman; Bob Tonkovich, Student Council Representative; Mrs. Mary Michielson, Sponsor; Barbara Golonka, Vice-President. Teri Perz, Secretary-Treasurer; Georgette Mytych, Publicity Chairman. PYTHAGOREAN SOCIETY MEDICAL CAREERS CLUB PREPARING FORTHEFUTURE Pink bunnies and polka dot elephants (stuffed animals, of course!) went to the children’s ward at St. Catherine’s Hospital from the Medical Careers Club, a club which promotes interest in the medical professions. Through competition within its own ranks, the Pythagorean Society gives students a chance to apply their knowledge of mathematics outside of the classroom. Meetings usually include a demonstration of geometric principles. SEATED: Sr. Faith, Sponsor; Justina Bialek, Vice-President; Mary Lou Bolfik, Vice-President; Ted Zagar, President; Bob Meisterling, President. STANDING: Fred Sampias, Treasurer; Tom Cieslak, Treasurer; Patricia Mund, Secretary; Kathy Brock, Secretary. 77 Correspondence with students living in France gave French II students an opportunity to in¬ crease their knowledge of the character of the typical Euro¬ pean. Unable to stage its annual French production, a review of French music, literature, and culture, the club attended a soiree held at Brother Rice. Other activities of the club in¬ cluded a trip to Chicago for the stage play Beckett by Jean Anouilh, and an evening of slides and a French tape from a British boy who has studied French for eight years. Dan Engleton, Vice-President; Sr. Miriam Edward, Sponsor; Annette Gerovac, Secretary; Waliene Swentko, President. FRENCH CLUB LATIN CLUB LANGUAGE CLUBS ACTIVE ROW ONE: Beverly Cieslak, James Lietzan, Tom Po- traza, Tom Hoy, Eileen Lex. DURING THE YEAR Because textbooks are limited in certain respects and because understanding the people leads to a fuller appreciation of the language, language clubs pro¬ vide a complement to classroom work. To fulfill this purpose the Latin Club sponsors entertain¬ ment with a Latin flavor, ban¬ quets and a Lupercalia. Here, togas are as essential to the would-be Romans as berets are to the French. SEATED: Toni Chandler and Peggy O’Malley, Senior Chairmen. SERVICE CLUB CHEERFUL SERVICE One of the oldest organizations in the school is the Service Club. Originally in¬ tended as a service to the faculty in the cafeteria, the group, composed entirely of senior girls elected in their junior year, this year ushered at the school’s social and religious functions. One social function they sponsored, however, was an annual Valentine Turn¬ about, always an important part of the social calendar. SEATED: Eileen Lex, President; Mrs. Devlin, Sponsor. Named after a Christian Brother from France who inspired many of his students to join the religious life, the Benildus Club is presently limited to senior boys, trying to make them more “vocation conscious.” Br. Daniel, who served as director during this inaugural year, planned many of the activities which make the Benildus Club one of the most popular groups at Noll. Many important activities, such as a weekend retreat and a dinner spon¬ sored for the parents of the religious and priests who have graduated from Bishop Noll, have proven to be highlights of the year. These were sponsored by the Sigma Kappa Gamma, Society of Catholic Girls, co-organized by Sisters Alma Clare and Miriam Edward to acquaint senior girls with the four states in life. AWARDS OUR DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARS Chosen as finalists on the basis of their college board scores and the recommen¬ dations of their principals, A1 Skwiertz and Trudy Souhrada were eligible for scholarships administered through the National Merit Scholarship Board. Public announcement of the winners was made late in April. Trudy, active in the National Honor Society, the Student Council, and the Service Club, plans to attend Purdue Uni¬ versity. A career in psychology or dentistry lies ahead for Al, who will attend Michi¬ gan State. 150 Andy Fetsch, Carolyn Lannin, and James Pancheri, National Merit Runners-up. Three seniors who have received National Merit Letters of Commendation are Carolyn Lan¬ nin, Andrew Fetsch, and James Pancheri. Carolyn, who has also received an American Legion award, will attend either Purdue or Georgetown University, where she will major in languages. Andy, who will attend Purdue to study chemi¬ cal engineering and mathematics has previously received a grant from the National Science Foun¬ dation to attend a seven week math program at Notre Dame. J. R. Pancheri plans to attend St. Joseph’s College Calumet Center and then transfer to Loyola University for his degree in English, which he plans to teach someday. Sister M. Scholastica, C.S.C., Ph.d. Sister M. Scholastica, chairman of the science department, authored An Experimental Course in Chemistry for High Schools, which was used in five chemistry classes at Bishop Noll during the school year. The laboratory manual is designed to present chemical concepts from a fresh point of view and is completely new in form and method. The man¬ ual contains twenty-one experiments which may be used in any order with any textbook. Many teachers across the country are trial¬ testing Sister’s work in their own schools. LAURELS BESTOWED ON After following a college preparatory course with a heavy emphasis on science, Tom Burke, the highest ranking sen¬ ior boy, has been selected as the Senior Class Salutatorian. Chosen on the basis of his achievement test scores, Tom has been awarded the Bausch and Lomb Science Award and has been nominated for a sub¬ stantial scholarship. He will continue his studies at Wabash College, where he will study medicine. With an eye to a future in art and fashion merchandising, Vikki Koczwara, the top rank¬ ing Senior Class member, will attend either St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, or will continue at St. Joseph’s College, Calumet Center, where she is getting credit for courses in art and music. Vikki has been a delegate to both Girl’s State and YCS con¬ ventions. She not only designed the sets for the French Club productions and the Christmas pageant, but also danced in each program. Tom Burke, Senior Class Salutatorian. QUALIFIED SENIORS Leo Bonaventura, Senior Class President. Leo Bonaventura, in his capacity as Senior Class President, has shown the leadership nec¬ essary for that position.
