Qti ' lt p, AoU Jlujh School Bishop Noll High School, center of Catholic secondary education in the Calumet area for thirty-five years, is the home port for students who come from a wide area. With each year not only the student enrollment but also the prestige of the School has advanced in every field of competition to the extent that Bishop Noll High School is now numbered among the largest schools in the area. With a meager beginning in the classrooms of St. Mary ' s Parish, East Chicago, Catholic Central High School, as the school was formally called, originated in 1921 with forty students under the tutelage of the Poor Handmaid Sisters of Jesus Christ. In 1923 Rev. P. J. Schmid was appointed director of the newly founded high school, and a building program was begun at that time at the present site of the school in Hammond. Father Conway succeeded Father Schmid as director of the school in 1934. Father A. J. Junk began his career at Noll as teacher and athletic director in 1933. In 1939 he succeeded Father Conway as Principal. In 1933 the Poor Handmaid Sisters were suc¬ ceeded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross who now number twenty-two members of the faculty. The student body not only has the advantage of these Religious as teachers, but the added services of seven diocesan priests and ten lay men and women. In 1947 Catholic Central High became Bishop Noll High School in honor of Archbishop John Francis Noll, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne since 1925, founder of Our Sunday Vis¬ itor, and a great benefactor of the school. The tremendous increase in enrollment in re¬ cent years necessitated the opening of two classrooms at St. Joseph ' s Parish in Hammond for the 1954-55 academic year. This past year a new west wing of six classrooms and a cafeteria was added to the school to relieve crowded conditions and accommodate the enlarged stu¬ dent body. 6
