Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1952 volume:

% PROJECTION OF PHOFILES If you could see beyond the hands of time into the future, would you be disappointed or pleased? Would Tomorrow be the attainment of all you had hoped for, or would there be something alien to your careful plans? We cannot predict the future, but we can be certain of one thing. Each one, in his own chosen field, will cast a shadow on the screen of life. Each one, in the pursuit of his vocation, will leave his mark on the world. We need not be apprehensive about the paths we choose, for we walk in the light of Eternal Truth, and we are enveloped by His grace. 3k. nu Luo A. Pursluy As Auxiliary Bishop of the Fort Wayne Diocese, His Excel¬ lency, Bishop Pursley, has re¬ vealed a genuine concern for this school. In 1951 he person¬ ally came to us to help establish Christ in the heart of each of us. His unselfish interest in the students and his friendly person¬ ality have captured the admira¬ tion and love of all of us here at Noll. 3k. Wlo,t .Inhn Francis Noll, D.D. To his Excellency, Bishop John Francis Noll, Bishop of the Fort Wayne Diocese, we students extend our most sincere esteem and gratitude. As the namesake of our be¬ loved school, he has ardently di¬ rected his efforts towards nour¬ ishing and developing it, so that it now stands a proud monu¬ ment to both religious and secu¬ lar learning. _ Botli in theory and in practice the ultimate of Catholicism and Catholic Education is the establishment throughout the world the belief in the one true God, His faith. His love, and His Church. As you leave your high school and begin your long journey through life, resolve to take Christ with you in all your works and endeavors. God love you all. Sincerely yours in Christ, REV. A. J. JUNK Principal LUMPARINli ANSWERS CLASSES The hopeful graduates are but dimly reflected on the screen of life. As our shadows hover over the screen, our futures will slowly come into focus. Soon each of us shall stand alone. One day our chosen paths will finally converge, and again we will stand together — be¬ fore God’s separating hands of judgment. VALEDICTORIAN and SALUTATIONIAN JOAN CECH The highest scholas¬ tic honor of the senior class goes to Joan Cech, the 1952 Valedictorian. Joan, a member of St. John Baptist parish, Whiting, and a gradu¬ ate of St. John Baptist grade school, came to Noll on a scholarship. She plans to continue her education in college and specialize in library work in Chemical Re¬ search. The Senior Class ing to her heartiest con¬ gratulations and best wishes for a successful career. JAMES FISCO Second highest honor goes to Salutatorian James Fisko of St. John Bosco parish, Ham¬ mond. Jim graduated from St. Joseph ' s grade school, Hammond, be¬ fore coming to Noll. He not only attained high scholastic merit, but was very active in extra-cur¬ ricular affairs as well. He will continue his ed¬ ucation at Xavier Uni¬ versity, Cincinnati, Ohio. To him also go sincere congratulations and every good wish. A necessary pre-requisite for membership in Noll’s Marynoll Chapter of the National Honor Society is a scholastic rating within the upper third of the class. Members are then chosen by the Faculty on the basis of Char¬ acter, Leadership, and Service. Under the sponsorship of Sister Marie Ce¬ line, the Honor Society successfully supervised Parliamentary class meetings throughout the year. Each year the Honor Society also offers a Noll scholarship to a boy and girl graduat¬ ing from a Catholic grade school in Lake County. One of its major projects is the collection of items for packing gift boxes to send to the indigent of foreign countries. Sister M. Andrew is sponsor of this club. MISSION SOCIETY The C.S.M.C. strives to give our students a fuller knowledge of missionary activity in other coun¬ tries. The regular First Friday Mission programs have this as their main feature. The Mission Study Club, also under the direction of Sister M. Ivan, plunges more deeply into this subject. All Noll stu¬ dents are enrolled and contribute both spiritually and materially to the welfare of the Missions. Spiri¬ tual bouquets, weekly collections, the clothes drive, and the collection of cancelled stamps and Catho¬ lic magazines are all the work of the Mission Society. FIRST ROW: M. Klempner, P. CHEER LEADERS MONOGRAM CLUB In almost every venture with an unpredictable out¬ come there are rough spots encountered. It is at such a time that a lot of encour¬ agement is needed and ap¬ preciated. Phyllis Gruszka, Loretta Miller, Margie Klempner, Dianne Burgess, Louise Biancardi, and Bev¬ erly Gesmond coaxed more of that indomitable Noll spirit from the rooters in the stands. The Monogram Club, primarily a social organization, is composed of athletes who realize the necessity of team work and sportsmanship not only on the field of play but also in the social world. PEP ELIJB The Pep Club, with Miss Herod as its sponsor, was headed this year by Pat Medvecz as President, Joanne Portz as Vice-President, and Helen McLaughlin as Secretary-Treasurer. All Noll’s glory isn’t won on the gridiron or basketball court. Win or lose, Noll fans are known to be loyal enthusiasts. We realize that good morale promises good sportsmanship, and we aim at preserving Noll’s reputation of good sportsmanship. The best devotees of Warrior games are to be found in Noll’s Pep Club. Formal membership in this club is usually limited to upperclassmen, but it cannot be said that sophomores and freshmen are wholly excluded. During the course of the year the name of the club was changed to the Booster Club and membership, formerly restricted to the fairer sex, was also extended to the male of the species. Noll’s bleachers are always filled with a good representation from all classes, and that representation is known to be made up of the most avid and devoted Noll rooters. DRAMATICS CLUB Show business is much more than enjoyable curtain calls, as members of the Dramatics Club have well learned from Miss Salon, organizer and sponsor of the club. They learn from a to z what play production really is: hard work at rehearsals, scenery, stage crew, make-up, etc. Mem¬ bers of the club have gained invaluable personal experience and have also brought enjoyment to their school and community. CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club has contributed much to further the enjoyment of social events at Noll. Under the leadership of Mr. Savin, its members capture the thrills of the athletic contests, the operetta, the dances, and many other events. This experience will prove very useful to the Club members in the future. FIRST ROW: H. Kwiatowski, G. Magliocca. R. Welch, T. Bridgman, J. Bielak. SECOND ROW: A. Pupillo, R. Cataldi, C. Richter, R. The beautiful and familiar music of Christmas time, as reproduced by the Choraliers, has brought joy and exulta¬ tion to the hearts and minds of Noll students and also to the many groups and places visited by them. Besides his many and time-consuming duties as teacher and Dean of Boys, Fr. Melevage is responsible for all musical pro¬ grams at Bishop Noll High. Under his tutelage, the various choral groups have acquired a splendid reputation. The operettas always exceed everyone’s expectations. His efforts haj e brought to all a greater appreciation for music and the finer arts. It is they who have contributed and are contributed their talents that we might be entertained by their beautiful melodies. They have undoubtedly attained well-deserved success. FIRST ROW: B. The untiring efforts of Fr. Melevage and Mr. Sarvello and the wonderful cooperation of its participants made this operetta a real competitor of those of previous years. The singing was superb and the scenery was exquisite. These productions have brought a real appreciation of culture to all. FATHERS CLUB Uiijjii i;! a aalaisHiSl ATHLETICS REV. A. J. ZIMMERMAN As Priest-Advisor of the Athletic Department, Fr. Zim¬ merman is indeed a busy man and jack of all trades. Securing a season ' s sports schedule is a real headache for any independent school, but Father has been successful. The responsibilities of publicity manager, contract super¬ visor, ticket manager, and sports procurator make heavy demands of his time and energy. However, he still man¬ ages to schedule grade school tournaments and cheer for Johnny Parsons. MR. JAMES BUCKLEY Master mind of the baseball diamond, line coach in football, assistant coach in basketball are all roles that Coach Buckley efficiently fulfills. He is a true believer that work, work and more work is the only way to build an athlete. As long as Coach Buckley is on the field, there will be no loafing anywhere. He is the inspiration of Noll’s Never-Say-Die” spirit. Though he has always cracked the whip, his boys still admire him deeply. MR. KARL HUFFINE The man with all the trick plays and Fr. Zimmerman’s co-worker is Mr. Huffine. Mere mention of his name immediately turns all thoughts to football, for he is the head coach of Indiana’s State Champions. His cigar and beaten hat are familiar to many as he paces up and down the side lines. Coach Huffine is responsible for the bril¬ liant fleetness of Noll’s backfield. If you are fast and like football, Coach Huffine is sure to find you — that is, unless you find him first. MR. ED HUDSON Indiana loves its basketball, and Mr. Hudson, a native Hoosier, loves to coach the game as much as play it. Coach Hudson has one of the most dangerous jobs in Indiana — head basketball coach. Coach Hudson’s War¬ riors have been the most talked about team in the Ham¬ mond Sectionals for the past two years. In 1951 it was Hudson’s all-court press; in 1952 it was his famous stall. He has brought many thrills to Noll’s loyal basketball fans and will long be remembered. 74 IIVI1IMA STATE CHAMPS FIRST ROW: J. Mulflur, G. Hawley, D. Rovai, E. Zuffa, W. Stephan, J. Hoess, J. Seldom does an in¬ dependent team attain the height of State Champs, but Noll’s muscle, brawn, and brain did it in a blaze of glory. Teams come and go, but it will take a great deal of brilliance to equal the record of these men. The task of Football Manager is one of all work and no glory. The managers do a great deal of work behind the lines and scenes; but when the honor is distributed, they are often un¬ recognized. However, at Noll the work of the Managers is ap¬ preciated by one and all. Ham¬ mond’s touchdowns came on a pass and a blocked punt. Hull 28- Chicaqn llu.siihli! 0 This was a test to sec how much punishment the boys could absorb rather than the amount needed to score. The Warriors had their way as far as the game went, but suffered much physical roughing. Paul Danko, Al Kalemba, Dave Aust- gen. and Jack O ' Drobinak were credited with a touchdown apiece. Don Rovai also received credit for a safety. Noll 52 — Terre Haute Gertsnieyer 0 Here the boys had a riot intercepting passes and scoring touchdowns. Jack O’Drobinak led the way with three tallies. Second in the scoring parade was Dave Austgen with two T.D.’s. Others to score were Al Kalemba, Paul Danko, and Harry Deakin on a 40 yard pass from hill Orlich. The high¬ light was an 80 yard touchdown made by Jack O ' Drobinak. Al Kalemba scored twice, one being a 00 yard race. Two more tallies were made by- Paul Danko and Gerry Florey. The opponent ' s scores were made by Tom Hill on an inter¬ cepted pass and by Bob Banta straight down the middle. 13— Gary Roosevelt fl ier 13 gave the boys a slight scare, but le through a little scratched. Strong winds made it almost strictly a running game, much to our favor. John Kralek spread the glory of the line by recovering a fumble in the Fractional end zone. Jack O ' Drob- inak scored twice, while A1 Kalemba and Joe Mulflur also tallied. Niill 13— Evansville Memurial 13 The winning streak came to rest after 14 victories. Cold weather, strange land, and a tough team did the trick. Memorial’s Don Hunt and Bill Ballard scored the first pair of touchdowns. In the final period championship form and a fighting spirit turned defeat into a tie. Dave Austgen and A1 Kalemba did the scoring. Al’s score fol¬ lowed a kick-off fumble. Noll 41— Nublesville (1 Glory, fame, and an undefeated season came to an end with the helpless Millers being the trimming. It was a field day for the State Champions in a sea of mud and sawdust. Tom Maloney marked another one up for the brawny line by scoring on an intercepted pass after a penalty nullified a previous one. Passes from Bill Orlich to Don Ravai and Terry Sullivan accounted for two tallies. In the backfield Jack O’Drobinak took the honors with two scores, while A1 Kalemba and Dave Austgen shared the remaining two. VABSITY BASKETBALL TEAM , Coach Buckley. SF.C.- The Noll Varsity had a winning season, although they had a mania for losing the close ones. In the Sectional Tourney Noll defeated Lowell in the opening game. In the second game Coach Eddie Hudson again proved to be a “Sectional coach” when his team stalled half of the game against Ham¬ mond Clark, only to lose when the talented Clark team went on a hot shooting spree. Inland has been in the busy Calumet Region for more than a half-century. We ' ll be here in the future, too, because we’re a basic industry, making a product used by everyone, including the housewife opening a can of peas and the G.I. firing an artillery shell. Inland Steel Company serves the nation —and it can serve you, too, in the exciting days ahead. Inland Steel Company, 3210 Watling St., East Chicago, Ind. Y ou’re saying goodbye to your high school days—but you’re saying hello to new, exciting days ahead. Congratu¬ lations and welcome to the future! In this future, Inland Steel’s opportun¬ ities are yours . . . opportunities open to high school grads. If you have some mechanical training or aptitude, there are careers open in many fields: as machinists, welders, electricians, patternmakers, pipefitters, boilermakers. There are careers to follow in metallurgy and chemistry. And there are opportun¬ ities in the office and clerical fields. The job of production—making the steel needed to keep America strong—offers a challenge to alert, young men. You can have a “get-ahead” future through Inland’s training opportunities. You can get apprentice or on-the-job training to become more skilled in your trade. You also can get college training Es tb ' l9! ’ fJnvt EWEURLEV ' • FHOVT n C M.KirSBERG “THE TYPEWRITER MAN, INC. 5319 Hohman Ave. HAMMOND, INDIANA Phone: Sheffield 682 Russell 9300 NORMAN JEWELERS 5257 Hohman Ave. Hammond SPICCIAS Compliments of RESTAURANT COCKTAIL LOUNGE • CONGLES ITALIAN and AMERICAN COOKING WONDERFUL FOOD RESTAURANT LOUNGE IN BEAUTIFUL AIR-CONDITIONED SURROUNDINGS! • Steaks, Chicken and Fish PRIVATE DINING ROOMS Dinner Parties and Weddings Available for WEDDINGS - BANQUETS PARTIES - SOCIAL CLUBS U.
