Schaub Ojua, (paJjwrL Father Marquette Two hundred and fifty years ago, Father Marquette, a Jesuit priest, explored the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes territory for France. He did work that was invaluable to the Church. He labored among the Calumet Indians in the region where Bishop Noll High School now stands. From Fr. Marquette they learned the principles of Catholicity. Today, these same principles are instilled in the students at Bishop Noll High by men and women who are the spir¬ itual descendants of Fr. Marquette. Our principal, Father Junk, leads them as Fr. Marquette led the mis¬ sionaries in his day. The curriculum of Bishop Noll High exemplifies the fact that the Church is still a leader in secular as well as religious mat¬ ters. Thus the ideals of our patron, Fr. Marquette, live on almost three centuries after his death. Faculty Coach R. Duax Sister Marie Jeanne, C.S.C. Sister M. Alma, C.S.C. Sister M. Raphaelita, C.S.C. Sister M. Severina, C.S.C. Sister M. The opportunity was ours and it was up to us to prove our worth. In the field of athletics we were very well represented. Besides our regular studies, extra-curricular activities attracted us, for the Bi- Phy-Chem, Tri-Opus and Choral Club had many outstanding members from the class of ’47. Last year it was our privilege to have the school paper printed for the first time. Our big endeavor, the Junior-Senior Prom, ended our third year with another success. Now, as Seniors, we are ready to don caps and gowns; we have reached our ultimate goal for we have proved ourselves to be true leaders. With the joy of remembered success there will remain for us a pro¬ found sorrow that four of our classmates met their death through fatal accidents in our graduation year. Patricia Mold was struck by a car on her way to the tournament game during the Christmas holidays. Patricia Penny, John De Paoli, Michael Brillo, and a sophomore, Marilyn Buckley, were killed when the car in which they were riding was struck by a train. Twelve Valedictorian Graduating with top honors is Barbara Doyle, our Valedictorian. She is from All Saints Parish, Hammond. Noll has meant more to Barbara than just gaining an education, for she accepted the challenge of our extra-curricular activities and became a member of the Bi-Phy-Chem, Latin, G.A. A., Tri-Opus and Choral Clubs. She also served on the Hi-Lite and Marquette Staffs. Secretarial work interests Bar¬ bara and she plans to attend Busi¬ ness College after graduation. Salutatorian George Obsitnik, our Salutator¬ ian, ranks high in scholarship and leadership. His four years at Noll have been busy ones. The Bi-Phy- Chem claims George as a member, as do the Tri-Opus, Latin and French Clubs. His literary talents were displayed in the Hi-Lite on which he served as News Editor. George hopes to continue his education at Purdue where he in¬ tends to study engineering. He is a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Gary. Thirteen Bock, Ann Marie Saint Joseph, Hammond, Indiana. Activities LIVING ROSARY Fathers ' Club Under the leadership of Mr. Norwood Markey, president, the Men’s Club spon¬ sored the Annual Athletic Banquet on February 4, 1947, with Mr. William Blake, an official of the Big Nine Conference, as guest speaker. The Spring Bazaar was made a more profitable and enjoyable affair through the efforts of “The Dads.” They have cooperated with the Mothers’ Club both in the parties for the students and the Bingos. Through the splendid effort of the Men’s Club, new banquet tables have been built. Three cheers for the Men’s Club. AAothers ' Club Row Is Mrs. J. A. Dalton, president; Mrs. J. Kaiser, sophomore vice-president: Mrs. J. Kretz, freshman vice-president. Women are encouraged to take their place in society, to cease holding back, to drop their inferiority complexes, to compete with men, to stop hiding their talents in their homes and to come out and develop all their abilities for the betterment of Bishop Noll High. This year the Mother’s Club, under the able direction of Mrs. J. A. Dalton, has completed many activities. The vice-presidents of each section, through the cooperation of the parents, have sponsored many enjoyable parties for their respective classes. They have also gained funds for the new building by sponsoring activities. As a group they have supported generously the Bazaar, Athletic Banquet, and the Sisters’ Shower. One of the outstanding events sponsored by the Mother’s Club is the breakfast given to the graduates and their parents. Hats off to the women who have developed all their abilities by introducing and guiding children full of wonder through a world of wonders. Forty-three James DeVany, president; Kathryn Taillon, Secretary, and Dolores Benich, vice-president, arrange the Mission Bulletin Board, while Andrew Petrovich, Treasurer, examines a Catholic Magazine. The true Catholic spirit of Bishop Noll High School is embedded in the Catholic Student Mission Crusade. This organization encourages the spiritual and financial aid of the students for the missions. Meetings are held in a general assembly on the First Friday of each month. Notable activities sponsored throughout the year were the Lenten Retreat, given by Father J. Costello; a performance of a “Dry Mass” in the Eastern Rite, by Father G. Mureson; and a Holy Hour, all well attended by the students. Sincere thanks are to be given to the students for their splendid cooperation in all the Mission drives. Forty-four The Junior Class, under the able direction of Sister M. Victorine, covered the news faithfully. In spite of paper shortages, the news never failed. The Staff set a new standard for future Warriors when they attended the Na¬ tional Press Convention at Milwaukee. Bi-Phy-Chem To be a member of the Bi-Phy-Chem is the ambition of every science student, not only because its activities are varied and interesting, but because it presents a challenge requiring one to excel in a scientific subject. This year, 1947, marks the cen¬ tennial of one who would have made an ideal science club member, Thomas Alva Edi¬ son. From him many an example can be taken. His formal education comprised only three months, but due to his mother’s diligent instruction and to his own scientific curiosity he gave to the world hundreds of inventions, his main ones being the electric light, the phonograph, and the motion picture. The Bi-Phy-Chem Club joins with scien¬ tists throughout the world in honoring his memory. This club has flourished under the sponsorship of Sister Mary Alma. Forty-six Tri-O pus The aims of the Tri-Opus Club are to encourage efficiency and interest in Com¬ mercial subjects and to develop leadership through social activities. To achieve the first, each year typing students take part in the National Catholic High School Typing Contest. The social activities sponsored by the Tri-Opus were varied. A Freshman Wel¬ come Party was given at the beginning of the year, introducing the newcomers to the social life of the school. Sport dances after the games highlighted the football season. “Winter Fantasy,” a semi-formal dance, was enjoyed by many at Christmas time. Senior members of the Tri-Opus presented the Junior-Senior Amateur Show, while the juniors took credit for the Freshman-Sophomore Amateur Show. At the Senior Spring Lunch¬ eon, awards were given for proficiency in bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing, climax¬ ing a successful social year for the club. The club functioned under the direction of Sis¬ ter Marie Jeanne. Magnificat The MAGNIFICAT, dedicated to Our Lady, is published by the sophomore class. The purpose of this annual publication is to encourage good student writing. Under the splendid supervision of Sister M. Josephita, the entire staff has done its share of work to make this publication possible. We thank M. Brandt, B. Chatas, M. Gasvoda, J. M. Kaiser, N. Luna, J. Martin, J. Pribanich, and R. Villarreal for pounding away at the typwriters and setting up the dummy. M. L. Atkinson, J. Churosh, L. Carlin, R. Doktysz, P. Dermody, J. Dvorsack, W. Echterling, L. Ferus, P. Ferrini, A.
