So important is the school in the parish building plans that many a pastor foregoes the construction of a church until the school plant is complete, preferring to hold religious serv- ices in a temporary set-up rather than neglect the Christian education of the young entrusted to his care. One may be tempted to question the wisdom, or perhaps the piety of a pastor So concerned for the younger portion of his flock. Katherine T. Hinkson, a Catholic authoress of prominence, gives us some insight into the purpose behind such a building plan when she exclaims, Ulf one could influence the young it would turn earth into heavenf' Education has always been a major concern of the Church. Parents are bound by a most serious obligation to provide to the best of their ability for the religious and moral, as well as the physical and civil education of their children. she stipulates in her Canon Law. The supreme pontiffs have written untiringly on the necessity of Catholic education, urging the faithful to build and support Catholic schools. and to educate their children in these schools. It was Pope Pius XI who formulated the motto: '4Catholic education in Catholic schools for Catholic youth. Thus, Holy lVIother the Church encourages and provides Catholic education for her children from the parish parochial school. through the Catholic high school, and into the Catholic college and university. Why this concern for Catholic education? Pope Leo XIII explains it thus: In educating the young it is not sufficient that religious instruction be given to them at fixed times: it is necessary also that every subject that is taught to them be permeated with Christian piety. If this is wanting, little good can be expected from any kind of learning. And, Pope Pius XI reminds us that the subject of Christian education is man whole and entire, soul united to body in unity of nature, with all his faculties. natural and supernatural. such as right, reason and revelation show him to be.
