'S' . , Every parishioner gets an opportunity to test his mettle in serving his Church, his parish, his neighbor, himself. For the Christian each day is another scrimmage in the great game of life. If one plays by the rules, he cannot loseg and victory means the crown of everlasting glory. lf thou wilt enter into life, keep the Commandments. Christ said. The program of life lists many challenges for testing one's strength of character. Perhaps all of these could he summed up as comhat in one's personal or spiritual life, and in one's social or parochial life. A man,s greatest foe in life is his own nature. what is called his disorderly affection of soul, a sad consequence of original sin. All life is an up-hill battle with one's self, but the man who wills it will finally reach the summit. Besides. his own determination is fortified by divine aid, for as the Crusaders of Christianity's Golden Age proclaimed. HGod wills it,,' too. Grace is always at hand. The summit of success in life is not the headline of earthly achievement. The gallant man is he who rules his own soul. and who learns the proper prospective in t.he game of life, knowledge of the worth of himself. and an evaluation of the world about him in the light of God's. Socially speaking a man plays a rugged ga me if he faces life fairly. On the gridiron of this century one faces such iron-clad foes as Communism. socialism, atheism. materialism. in- differentism. The wise man keeps alert: he knows he can count on his Church to call the signals. He hacks his team, his fellowmen, with a solid defense of charity and justice. And though the referees of this world may not c ll ll h, f ls f a a t e ou o one's opponents. though a man may get the worst of a life well-spent. as did St. Gregory the Great who died with these words on his lips: 'cl have loved justice and hated iniquity. therefore I dic in exile. though virtue and Valor may not Seem to get lhell' 1'eW31'flF at thc lIk1lNIlIf'lS of tllc w0l'lillX'. ilu' Clll'lSliLlIl man knows that God keeps the score. and this makes ll cliffcrvncc. . xg ' N, . 1 s ' 1 '31 1 ' Q '- .
