Dear Editors, This is my second year at Bishop Vloore High School, but I don't recall :ver hearing anything about the bishop 'or whom the school is named. Maybe Phe Miter can enlighten me. Mary Ann Bowers Catholic Schools are named to honor some saint or person. A number of schools in the United States have been named after bishops, archbishops, or :ardinals Bishop Moore High School was so nam- ed to honor Bishop John Moore, the sec- ond bishop of the diocese of St. Augus- tine who took care of the diocese from 1877 until his death in 1901, It was dur- ing the episcopate of Bishop Moore that the first Catholic school in Orlando was opened. This was St. .Joseph School, and was located at the present site of the city post office. Bishop Moore was born in Ireland and educated in this country. Before ordina- tion he studied in France and Rome. It was in Rome that he was ordained in 1860. By the time he returned to Charles- ton, South Carolina, to which diocese he was attached, Civil War had broken out. This meant that besides parish duties. Father Moore attended the wounded on the battle fields. When Bishop Augustine Yerol of St Augustine died, l :ither Moore was named to succeed him, .-Xl that time the dioeese numbered only I2 priests, :i few ehurehes, and fewer schools and eonvents.
