F OREWORD In order that man might once again live the supernatural life of Grace, the Son of God became man and died for our sins. That this Grace might be distributed to the men who came after Him, Christ established His Church, entrusting it to the care of His bishops and priests to whom He gave the powers of Orders and Jurisdiction. From that day to this the Church has brought men to God by bringing God to men. In its entirety the Church is a vast, far-flung spiritual organization. Nevertheless, for each individual the Churchi' is his parish, for although he is aware of the universality of the Church, it is within the confines of his parish that he comes to know that Church, and it is in his own pastor that he sees the functions of the priesthood. Whether it bein a magnificent cathedral of a metropolitan area, or in a tiny, wood-frame building of a mission outpost - here, in the parish church, is bridged the great gap between time and etemity. Here it is that the individual is bom into the life of Grace by baptism: here it is that he is spiritually strengthened and nourished by Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. And should he stumble on the rugged road to eternity, it is here, in his church, that his pastor will lift him up again by the grace of Penance. Here, too, he will receive the final benediction of the church when he comes to life's close. It is most appropriate then. dear seniors, that you have chosen Parish Life as the theme of your yearbook. From all the surrounding parishes of this area you have come to this central high school for your fonnal edu- cation. Now as you leave here and go forth to vie with the world for the salvation of your souls, it is to your parish church and to your pastor that each of you must tum for the means to this end. It is only in the spiritual life of the church. through the channel of parish-living, that you can receive the life-giving Grace, the encouragement, and the instruction necessary for the sanctification of your soul. Perhaps never before has the world been so in need of saints. There is an urgency today for men and women of solid faith and irreproachable morals. It is to you, members of the Class of 1959, that we, your pastors, your teachers. and your parents. look for these saving virtues: in you we hope to see men and women who have the wisdom to discern between right and wrong, and the will to dare remain loyal to christian con- vlctlons. Be faithful to Cod through the practice of your religion in your parish church. under the din:-ction of your pastor. Never let the worldly veil of paganistic materialism so blind your eyes that you cannot lift them to see, in all His glory, the Cod who made you! Rather. let the light of His Grace guide you. each one, on your journey through life. Then may you all one day attend a class reunion in the eternal mansions of Heaven. Cod blew you. lfulher John P.
