VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1979-80 Varsity Basketball team had a very frustrating year. First-year coach Steve Korte along with his assistant Greg Sabosky tried many combinations in an effort to find the answers. The Knight ' s 6-17 record could have been much improved however. Many losses were just by a couple of points. The Knight ' s played some outstanding games, notably a 57-51 league win over PiusX before a screaming home crowd, and a 40-37 upset win over Hart in the Beverly Hills Tournament. Players contributing much to the team included forward Ron Hayes, who singlehandedly kept Montgomery close in many early season games. Junior center John Coughlin who really came on strong late in the season, and sophomore Dwayne McAdoo who shot extremely well from the outside. Other contributors included returning lettermen Greg Gomez, an outstanding ballhandler, Tom Hardesty, who played foreward and guard, and Mike Mondello, the only member returning for his third season on the Varsity squad who unfortinately suffered a serious ankle injury. Also appearing at guard were Rob Hernandez, instrumental in the Pius win; and senior Ray Waters. Matt Gierat also had some excellent games at foreward, as did Mario Marquez and Steve Regalado. Seniors Bennie Lagos, Jon Mostero, Al Reyes, Greg Cook and Dave Porter also came through when called on. We must also remember team manager Greg Benkendorfer who gave loyal assistance to the team at all times and kept their spirits high. All in all, the 1979-80 season was a great learning experience for the team, and a year to be proud of for the members and their coach Steve Korte whose innovative coaching techniques really helped the team.
