1979 was a year the varsity football team can be proud of. They opened their season with a stunning 29-3 victory over the Redondo Seahawks. The defense shut Redondo down, forcing turnovers which gave the offense many scoring opportuni- ties. The North Torrance game was sweet revenge for Montgomery. Remembering the 1978, 13-10 heartbreaker, the Knights walked all over the Saxons 35-3, as fullback, Steve Abram ran wild. The Knights ' best games, ironically, were losses by identical scores. Top ranked CIF teams. Mater Dei and St. Paul, both came to Knight Stadium on successive Friday nights and both limped home, thanking their lucky stars for victories in games Montgomery dominated. No team in Montgomery history has worked harder than this year ' s varsity football team. They lifted weights, ran, polished their skills since early February, resulting in a team small in size, but very strong. The stand-out on this year ' s football team was senior, Steve Abram. He achieved All-League honors both as fullback and linebacker. Quarterback, Jim Miller, led the offense, and ke yed the passing attack, throwing to Lance Taylor, Tony Castillo, and Kevin Bateman. Both Miller and Taylor were selected second team All-League. Lineman, Kent Taylor, and defensive ack, Tom Baaden were also selected first team All-League. Other prominent figures were third year varsity lineman, n McOsker, defensive end, Joe Pueliu, defensive back, Rob Petroni, center, John Mellis, and running back, Terrell jds. 64 Varsity Football
