V A R S I T Y This years Varsity Basketball team showed dramatic im- provement in the second round of league playoffs defeating the second place team Bishop Amat 47 to 38. The team defense and shooting percentages improved overall especially for Ma- ria Cafaro, Sharon Medina and Jolene Gregory. Maria Cafaro, a Junior, averaged 10.4 points per game and completed 51% of her free throws. Her highest scoring game consisted of 19 points overall. She was also picked for second team all league and should be a great asset to the team in the 1980-81 season. Sharon Medina also chosen for second team all league averaged 9.5 points per game with her highest scoring game of 21 points. She scored 44% of her free throws and averaged eight assists per game along with Maria Cafaro who is always a threat under the basket. Sharon was also voted most valu- able player for the 1979-80 season. Jolene Gregory averaged 1 1.3 points per game and was a threat under the basket this year. She also had good rebound- ing. Michelle Smith a wing and a guard was responsible for several steals this season and will be a strong player for the 1980-81 season. Linda Husar a very aggressive guard and a big threat on defense was a great player with good passing ability. First year coach Terry Mason did an extremely fine job of uniting this years team in many winning combinations of play. She felt the most improved players were Maria Cafaro and Cathy Aki. The most inspirational was Patti Aki. This was with no doubt a tough and talented team. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL i I I t 1 lit 25 % iyiiA.i it ■■ Girls ' Junior Varsity Basketball WE THEY 26 Si. Paul 49 33 Mater Dei 59 41 27 29 Pius X St. Paul 34 23 Mater Dei 48 36 38 Pius X 38 Bishop Amal 37 , i The team was made up primar- ily of freshmen who hadn ' t yet ex- perienced high school basketball. They had a lot to learn in a short time. A junior, Donna Bozulich, having more experience and knowledge, helped the team pro- gress throughout the year. This was a key factor in the progres- sion of the team. The team ' s inex- perience lasted but a short time because they worked hard. As the year progressed the games be- came closer and closer. After their game against St. Paul things began to go in their favor. They pulled out two victories, one against Pius X and the other over Bishop Amat. Diane Cafaro and Karen Costello contributed a ma- jority of the points throughout the season. Considering the team had no practice games before the season which hurt their perfor- mance, they finally put it all together. Another factor against them was that they had no gym time and they had to practice outside. The team was led by first year coac h Carol Stellino who, with the help of Donna Bozulich, taught the team a great deal. With better practicing conditions and this season ' s experience the team should be really sharp next season. Coach Mason gives ihe girls an inspiring pep talk. Maria Cafaro Hghis a swarm of offending players awaiting the rebound.
