'l'hese are the l3enedietines and the storv of their order is indeed an interesting one. lhe Pueneclietine Order was founded in the sixth centurv bv St. Benedict, while his twin sister. St. Scholastica, was forming a convent under his direc- tion. The order was founded for the purpose of establishing a peaceful familv atmosphere in which the religious men and women could live a ft1ll Chris- tian life. 'lihe source of the Benedictine spirit is the Mass and the Divine Office. Benedictines are taught how to draw the most fruit from these sources in order that thev mav always be an ever new and refreshing center of their religious life. Sisters of Pro idence, Sr. Joan Therese, S.P.. typing instructor, sits at her desk, planning her next bulletin board for room 13. Sr. Mary Joanita. SP., religion and commercial instructor. smiles joyful- ly as she spells out the right word to put her ahead in a close scrab- ble game. Page I6 When student life sometimes hits the tedious points. when the monotony of daily routines be- comes almost unbearable and the hours from nine to three seem never to pass. one can always count on two little black-veiled heads plotting things of in- terest for the students. The little Providence Sisters always pull through. The order of the Sisters of Providence had its beginning when Mother Theodore Guerin led five French sisters into the Indiana wilderness of an unf known land. There, with nothing more than a roclv like trust in Gods Providence. she built St. Mary-off the-Vwloods. This was the year l840. Mother Theodore was considered an outstand- ing educatorfthe government had attested that fact by decorating her with the French medallion for proficiency in teaching. Thus, in the spirit of their foundress, the Providence Sisters developed compel tent teachers in every field of study. However. devotion to the Blessed Sacrament has always characterized the true Sister of Providence ln the Exposition Chapel at St. Mary-of-the-XVoods is continued unbroken a tradition of Perpetual Ad- oration of more than thirty-five years. ll T Y xxx, X - 1 I 4 4.

The Precious Blood sister pays honor to the ob- ject of their devotion even by the symbolism of the dzstinctive garb she wears. The wine :olor of her cineture and sash reminds her of the price of her redemption. Seven red tassels at each end of the sash are symbolic of the seven blood sheddings of Our lord and His seven last words on the cross. Down the front of the cape are seven buttons symbolizing the seven sorrows of Nlary. while the small golden heart suspended from a chain is a reminder of the Divine lleart from which flowed the blood ol the Savior.
