No one knows this better than those unfortunate stu- dents who had to visit the hospital sometime during the year for some ailing disability. One of the biggest thrills, they will recall, was to receive visitors, espe- cially il' it happened to be a member of the faculty. They will again recall that the Sisters of Nlercy were among their most frequent visitors. There is a def- inite reason for this. The distinctive feature ofthe Sisters of Mercy is that their works are the XVorks of Mercy and their Rule combines the active with the contemplative life, the duties ol' Nlartha with those of Mary. The Institute ol' Our l.ady of Mercy was or- ganized by Nlother Catherine Mcrauley in Ireland on June 6, l8-ll. Mother Mcfaulev established her institute primarily for the poor, but when she real- ized that children of the middle class were being neglected, she immediately opened schools to meet this necessity.
