Gros es area and the spreadrng frngers of Sacred Heart xarrsh called for the beglnnrngs of Immaculate Cwonceptlon and St James parrshes on the south and vxest extremetles of the south sectron of the clty St Charles Borremeo servrng the Warr Acres area yeas concened rn 1954 and ln 1935 Mercy Hospltal began a mrllron dollar add1t1on and remodelrng and If became necessary to almost double the S178 of the Catholrc 1-lrgh School Oklahoma Crty IS also blessed by belng the home for three re lrgrous houses all of them connected vxlth the Carmelltes The Car melrte Fathers at 1125 South Walker came to the c1ty and erected the Mt Carmel and l rttle Flower Church They haxe been a bulwark rn the c1ty1n the mrssronary xx ork done 1n rty and their relentless labor among the the downtown area C'armel1te Slsters of St Teresa came to the poorer sectlons of the MCXICZH settlement near Oklahoma Crty 1n 1926 beglnnrng at 931 North The Clolstered Carmelrte SISICFS had the1r west Erghteenth Street rn December 1938 but rn 1948 moved to therr present locatlon at Northwest Forty second and Merldlan Ave nue Both orders haxe done much for the grovx th of the church not only rn the c1ty but all ox er the state and haxe brought many souls to God through therr tlreless efforts Thus are the developments of a church as It rrses and spreads xtself among a people XVhat IS to come durmg the next f1fty years no one can know They can only hope that 1t w1ll parallel the ad xancement of the frrst frfty years rn whrch less than ten per cent of a populace burlt a drocese as they were helprng to burld a state But thrs story of the church ln Oklahoma Clty IS by no means ended or ex en complete It barely scratched the surface of a half century of struggle labor defeat and trrumph lt hardly touched upon the forc es and rndrvrduals behlnd the upsurgance of the glory of God Stlll 1t IS tremendous But the development of a church anywhere be rt among the slums of a sprawlrng crty or on the uneasy frontler of an uncrvrlrzed pra1r1e IS always tremendous for thus IS the hand of God spreadrng Hrs gospel over one small dradem rn the 1nf1n1ty of time and space Thus IS the conceptlon of a state the rnceptron of a drocese the brrth of a people a Phoemx rrsmg out of the ashes Neee Pzrzshes fezrrmlzles Izllle Iloeeer Parzsh U w L , . 5 , I X . . 'D .LL C400 N33- :Sm-f.Ci ff a :Zi zu-:W mage' CJ'T7'.2 QQ'-+ 235 'S-'S-9' op mox cd to hrs present manslon at Northwest Frfteenth and 1-lud son The next year Father Connor took over the YQIHS of lcadershxp at thc Cathedral and two years latcr the Blshop turned over the burldmgs and properties of St Francls to the par1sh makmg xt 1n dependent ln 1926 Corpus Chrrstl mox ed to 1ts present locatlon at North cast Flfteenth and Kelly Axcnuc and Father Walde began work on the bcaut1ful structures that non grace the s1te and whxch make up the center ofCathol1c1sm for the entlre Northeast sectlon of the c1ty Father James A Garvey took the post as head of the Assoclated Cathollc Charrtles 1n Oklahoma C1ty 1n 1940 and undertook the task of buxldmg and enlarg1ng the Assoc1at1on to what lf IS today homa C1tV area was establ1shed m 1940 The home was set up on the orphanage grounds outsrde the c1ty but 1n 1945 was moved to 1208 North Shartel At th1s tlme the Brothers of Mercy who had been carmg for the allmg Brshop Kelley started St Vmcent s Home for the Aged on Northeast Twenty thlrd Street Th1s home took only men and the women were taken care of at the Shartel home These bulld 1ngs also became madequate before long and xt became 1ncreas1ngly evldent that a modern up to date home would have to be bu1lt The erect1on of th1S home became a part of the over whelmmg growth of the church all over the state after the close of the second World War One of the most lmportant dex elopments of th1s surge of growth 1n the CIIY was the purchase of the Oklahoma Clty General Hospital by the SISYQFS of Mercy The S1sters took over the hosprtal and named lf after thelr order Mercy Hospltal Thls gave the church the care of the two mam hospltals m the c1ty area The present church at St Francxs was also begun m 1946 In 1947 plans were la1d for a new par1sh to be bu1lt to serve the Nrchols H1lls area and th1s resulted 1n the foundmg of Chrlst the Kmg par1sh 1n 1949 In 1950 St Ann s Home for the Aged was completed and the sorely needed new cen tral Cathollc Hlgh School was opened The eastern most part of St Francrs par1sh was separated and made rndependent and St Patr1ck's par1sh came 1nto exxstence Durlng these years Father Schlllo started hrs back breakmg mrssronary work 1n the Sandtown and Walnut H .
