Page llr yearbook is dedicated to Joy always manages to accompany misery. No one knows this better than those unfortunate stu- dents who had to visit the hospital sometime during the year for some ailing disability. One of the biggest thrills, they will recall, was to receive visitors, espe- cially il' it happened to be a member of the faculty. They will again recall that the Sisters of Nlercy were among their most frequent visitors. There is a def- inite reason for this. The distinctive feature ofthe Sisters of Mercy is that their works are the XVorks of Mercy and their Rule combines the active with the contemplative life, the duties ol' Nlartha with those of Mary. The Institute ol' Our l.ady of Mercy was or- ganized by Nlother Catherine Mcrauley in Ireland on June 6, l8-ll. Mother Mcfaulev established her institute primarily for the poor, but when she real- ized that children of the middle class were being neglected, she immediately opened schools to meet this necessity. The Union of the Religious Sisters of Mercy in the United States of America now comprises nine provinces and numbers six thousand Sisters. The little Providence Sisters always pull through. The order of the Sisters of Providence had its beginning when Mother Theodore Guerin led five French sisters into the Indiana wilderness of an unf known land. There, with nothing more than a roclv like trust in Gods Providence. she built St. Mary-off the-Vwloods. This was the year l840. Mother Theodore was considered an outstand- ing educatorfthe government had attested that fact by decorating her with the French medallion for proficiency in teaching. Thus, in the spirit of their foundress, the Providence Sisters developed compel tent teachers in every field of study. However. devotion to the Blessed Sacrament has always characterized the true Sister of Providence ln the Exposition Chapel at St. Mary-of-the-XVoods is continued unbroken a tradition of Perpetual Ad- oration of more than thirty-five years. ll T Y xxx, X - 1 I 4 4. fiv- f Sr. .lime Marie. So too are our studies here in school a preparation. Just as We prepare ourselves in the church year for the coming of Christ, so through our studies in the school year do we prepare ourselves for our future lives as leaders of the Church. We are now in a state of watchful expectancy, of learning and observing. We are waiting for the time when we will receive an even greater abundancy of grace to help us in carrying on the work of Christ in His Church. Right next door in room ll. typewriters really got a workout. The new CHS juniors quickly learned that this was the real thing. No hunt and peck system was allowed here. These are feasts of great joy, fes- tivity, and fulfillment. They are times of triumphant participation in the victory of Christ. Celebration is also found in our school life when we give our plays and concerts, in our sports, and in all our school activities. They show the enjoyment of all our work and preparation. Thus we find joy in our own accomplishments just as we find joy in those of Christ at Christmas and Easter. But more important than the joys and rewards our study and preparation give now, there is present in this celebration period a promise of the accomplishments we will be able to achieve in the future. l r sl? 2 :EJ H 'Hifi' X Helabrafion JN WNVW5' t2 Q X' S. Marilyn l.ucas. and l.ouise Steelman. and juniors Mary Jane Mahn- ker, Mary lillen XVhitton. and Sharon XVall, after a summer of practice. started preparing the Pep Club for its first full schedule of cheering at football games. 'lihe highlight of this season was the formal initiation of the new football field by both the CHS team and Pep Club. This occured at the homecom- ing game. when both groups were given a chance to show their abilities. lhroughout the year the boys found the Pep Club girls not only willing rooters. but also faithful customers for the tags they sold before each game. XK'hat could he .1 better proof of the girls' wish to encourage their team? XVinding up the activities of the year was the cheerleader election held at the end of school. Se- lected as leaders for next year were Alice Baylor, Connie liyans. Suzy Sturm, l.eitner .larrell. liran- ces Moran. and Nlary lillen Berry. Next year they will lead the Pep Club once again through its cleyer and enthusiastic cheers which have become such a tradition here at Catholic High. 1,!illI .llilleri the Pep Cftzh lreasurer. and Katie Pace. the Yt'll't'ltlI'll. tie! tl ft-tt' pointers from .Sctlftl Stmders. the presti- dent '1 'Shi' t X X., wg? The first official kickoff of the '54 football season for CHS was witnessed at Tulsa where the lrish edged the St. Monica Saints in the closing half of play, IW7. Quarterback Don Best and left half Bart Cronin spearheaded the Catholic attack with Best calling the plays and Cronin answering his pleas on two tallies. The strength of the Irish in the seasons opener was seen more clearly in the net yard rushing where the Saints were held numberless to Catholics I75. The inauguration of Catholic Highs new foot- ball field and homecoming game with St. Gregory Knights on September 24 resulted rather unexpected- ly. The Knights proved too much for the green and white. leading all the way to climax a 54-6 victory. On January 28 the Knights of St. Gregorys got a shellacking from a flu crippled Irish team when Clerald Abel and Ernie lVIcCiuire teamed up with 21 and I9 points, respectively, to beat the Knights 59- 53. St. Gregorys had its revenge in the all too im- portant return game as they bounced the Irish 80- 56. With the end of January came the trip to Tulsa. where the Irish succeeded in their first outing smack- ing St, Monicas 47-36. The second time didn't prove so successful though. for. on the following Iiriday, Marquette put on a last half rally, tallying 40 points to overpower the Irish 59-42. Ernie Mc- Guire burned up the backboards in the road games ripping the nets for ll points in each game. On February ll, Cascia Hall came to town and made short work of the Irish 45-554. Holy Family came in the following Friday and walked away with a close victory, despite a fourth quarter rally by the Irish. Twenty-one seemed to be Iirnie MCGUIYCIS lucky number as he again scored 21 points. The Catholic Iligh baseball season proved suck cessful to the point that the Irish won the city Catholic baseball championship and was runnerup to Holy Ifamily for the state championship. The opening four gaines of the season, however. were not too heartening since the Irish bowe1l to Bethany on March 23. Northeast on March 28, to St. Marys on April IZ. and to the Vikings again on April l9. But on April 22 things began to pick up as the Irish blanked the St. Marys Rockets 7-O in a two- hit shutfout game pitched by Don Best. Then again on April 25 the Irish knocked St. Marys team 6-5. thereby obtaining the city Catholic championship. On April 770 the Irish journeyed to Holy Trin- ity in Okarche for the district playoffs. As the re- sult of winning two of the games in a three-game series they gained a berth in the state playoffs, But on May 8 when Catholic met Holy Family at Texas Iieague Park for the state Catholic championship they were edged I8-0. lf' l Wallzer puts 111717ther feather IIT? hm cap 11s he scores the only h11 117 the final game of the gear, Page 6 7 ,Q 3' 'iv 'ii sv- Iiill Salwtla, Rirhard Mi'- zicre. and I-'rua' XVi1itchuk wait for Ihr ilun lwforc h0aa'iniJ for thimxi- u.'ia'v open spaces, Jim Mazffivlil malcifx like a ballerina aftcr throwing thi- iIisa'i..w at ' fl practice .si-ssion. hiah jump is ,lim Mcffaffrcq. Under the direction of Sister Mary David OSB., the Glee Club took part in a fall concert, a music festival, the operetta. the Variety Show. and various other activities. The fall concert in December was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin for the Marian Year and fea- tured Palestrina's beautiful eight-part polyphonic Assumpta Est Maria which the Glee Club sang in six parts. Onf engagement which gave part of the Cilee Club members a chance to sing their hearts and lungs out was the televised appearance of the group singing under Main Streets giant Christmas tree. 'Coldfbut fun. was the verdict of the carolers. who were led by the Rev. Cieorge Kroupa. More caroling was done by the juniors and seniors who visited the various convents and chari- table Catholic institutions in the city spreading good will and cheer. Before they knew it the students were thrown into the first stages of learning the operetta The Chimes of Normandy which consumed most of their time until May. The Gargoyle Music Contest sponsored by St. Gregorys at Shawnee gave individual soloists and ensembles in the Glee Club a chance to perform away from home and gain much experience. ,sf Maru 'lam' Mczhnlzer lhouulvlfully looks over a .selec- tion for ll tomme presentrzlron while Eileen Reub slrzrlies zz rlzlifrctzlf .serlrrnn uml Karen Hutclzins plays fmolher with expert precision. We have prepared for Christ and have followed His life through the Church year, and now we reap the benefits we have gained from His example and integrate them into our lives. And so it is in our school life. For four years we study and pre- pare, and exhibit our talents to some degree.
