Mary Whit1narsl1's family landed in Massachusetts in 1650, while Marv Orlowicz came to America with her family on September 27, 1957, from Russian-occupied Poland. As you can see, our girls come from all types of homes. Yet into the lives of our people flows such a love of Our Lady that 1627 of our girls bear the name of Mary in some form. Since this custom of naming a child after someone who will serve as an inspiration to the child is such a strong tradition, it seems only fitting that we dedicate this 1960 Mitre to Our Lady. Library is one of the most popular spots in our school. Our trouble is in keeping girls out of the library, Place is always crowded. Sister reports that approximately 600 girls visit the library daily. It is a good record and one of the reasons for it is that we have 14.560 volumes ranging from the Poetifs of Aristotle to the Elements of Style by YYilliam Strunk. Jr. and E. B. White. As you can see there is some- thing for every girl in our library. Periodicals? Sister subscribes to them all from Scvontrolz to the Catholir World to National Geographic. Virginia Domenico, Judy Greene, Rosita Creamer, and Angele Porcaro tax their imaginations for a new caption slant. Mitre girls? Don't ever remember having seen one. Mitre Workshop is in the basement and folks around here say that every now and then that door opens, a girl comes out, rides the elevator to some mysterious destination, then returns as quickly and as silently as she left. Neighbors report that at periodic intervals Mitre girls can be seen climbing the walls and muttering Udead line or dead lines or something to that effect. Some of them do come to classes to take pic- tures but even then they are so hidden behind a huge dummy that you would never be able to identify them in a court of law. I never saw a Mitre girl leave the building. They are there at 5 P. M., and when I come to school in the morning they are still there. Maybe some of them stay overnight. One girl told me that she heard that Mitre girls even come to school on holidays. Trying to get this copy, I stood for days outside the Mitre Workshopg I saw no human faceg I heard no human voice-all I heard was the warning bell on the typewriters as they finished another line of copy. Learn, Live and Love the Faith was the theme for this years Retreat. I think I like Retreat better in September than during Holy Week. A September Retreat gives me a perspective on the school year that lies ahead. As Monsignor Asip and Father Murphy outlined a way of life for us, I began to see that prayer and work are inseparable. Without exception they prefer read- ing to television and spend very little time before the T.V. set. Eight of them play some musical instrument while all ten of them find time for sports, with tennis as their favorite and bowling a close second. Math and English are the preferred subjects and we are happy to say that teaching is the career that most of them will pursue. At St. Joseph's College Carol deVincet will use her State Scholarship to major in Math, while janet Hampel will use her schol- arship at Mt. St. Vincent where she will major in English. State Scholarship winner Pat Scully plans to attend St. Vincent's Hos- pital School of Nursing in New York City. Barbara Taylor and Carol Bertani will major in Math at Oswego State Teachers College and at the College of New Rochelle. Also planning a career in Nursing is Lorraine lieczysak who expects to train at Bellevue Hospital in New York. Fordham beckons Nora Tynan who is anxious to prepare for a career in the field of secondary education. No need to worry about these girls. What makes them outstanding is not only their native ability but also their willingness to work. Such a combination is the formula for success in school and in life and from what we have seen these girls have mastered this formula. ALL AROUND SERVICE. Our school is the largest Catholic girls school in Brooklyn. yet lots of little things happen here each day. These little things do not fit into any special category, but they are apt to be the events that some of the graduates remember best in later years. For instance, 554 of our graduates remem- ber how they worked in the General Oftice. Every graduate remembers the color guard at assemblies. but only 204 girls will be able to claim the honor of having been selected as a member of the color guard. We wonder how many ever achieved a perfect attendance record? But, we know that anyone who served on the Laurel or the Mitre will recall the thrill of Catholic Press Day. From this you can see that people are the same all over the world, and even in a big school it's the little things that count. SATISFACTORY SERVICE. Helping in the office during their study period, Marianne Stewart and Helene Raikowski prepare to mail Regents diplomas to graduates. Perfect attendance is another characteristic of the best students n our school. Here, Elsie Lachenmayr, Mary Ann Libassi and at icia M ne close umbrellas in the basement lockers. Rain must be or at least the umbrellas are dry. vi ,K .- 7 f Z 171: 5 WIN ALL PRAISE The outstanding accelerated Seniors come from all parts of Brooklyn and represent such parishes as: St. Lee's, St. Theresals, St. Mala- chy's, St. Gregory's, St. Augustinels, St. Ce- cilia's, Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. If you know the geography of Brooklyn, you know that includes Crown Heights, Richmond Hill, Greenpoint, Bay Ridge and East New York. Quite a bit of territory to cover even in a Thunderbird. Eileen Lanigan who will use her State Schol- arship to major in Chemistry at St. Joseph's College has the unique hobby of making model airplanes. Also registered at St. Joseph's Col- lege are Michelina Barone who will major in Modern Languages and joan Sirica who will study Child Psychology. Drama enthusiast and State Scholarship win- ner Elsie Lachenmayr plans to specialize in English at Catholic University in Washington. Dolores deVito, another scholarship winner, will study Business Administration at St. John's University while Mary Turrin will work for the same degree at Queens College. Pat Mone will earn a degree in English at the College of New Rochelle and Mary Ann Libassi will pre- pare for high school teaching at St. josephls College. In the Accelerated June group, college has no attraction for Mary Eaton and Mary Hoban who prefer to join the staff of the Fed- eral Bureau of Investigation. Whatever work these girls choose we feel confident of their success. During their four years here at Bishops, they have disciplined themselves intellectually and formed excellent work habits. Unless they had made a contribu- tion to the social life of the school, they would never have been recommended for this page in the yearbook. These girls then are well bal- anced individuals who should make an im- portant contribution to the community in what- every field they select. At the Dance Assembly our girls performed everything from ballets to Polkas. Polish girls wearing their national costumes with all the ribbons. beads, buttons and bows made a colorful picture as they presented their lively folk dances. Hundreds of girls in the audience could not refrain from tapping their feet to the rhythmn of Yankee Doodle as rendered by a ilfe and drum corps. What did I contribute? At the entrance to the Little Theatre, Agnes Melber, Doris Marchen- beck and Lillian Johnson check the programs for the German Club's production. ALL CLEAR. At the end of a busy day, Miss Gorman, secretary to Father Cavanagh, once more has a clear desk. A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING. With cheerful efficiency, Mrs. Ray Moschella goes about the task of put- ting everything in its place in the General Office. PAID IN FULL. Mrs. Gorman gives a receipt for the semi-annual educa- tional fee to Ellouise Osterman. Lay Staff manifests efficiency. SPEEDY SERVICE. Mrs. Connors checks program cards with Bernadette Lavelle. MASTER OF ALL. In his workshop, Mr. Ferguson mends a wall map for the History Department. Need pictures of that Wash- ington trip? Miss Gorman will arrange to get them. If you want a transcript or a green absence card or a chaperone for the prom, Mrs. Connors and Mrs. Noschella will gra- ciously oblige. Most essential. however, is Mr. Ferguson, for he preserves the unity of the home. If Mr. Ferguson didn't ring that bell at 5:45, Glee Club, Orchestra, Mitre, Dra- matics and Laurel girls would never leave the building.
