We did not have to go beyond the local scene to find a man of courage and daring who kept his roots always in the solid, safe foundation of Catholic truth. Such a man was Rt. Rev. Msgr. joseph V. S. McClancy. We proudly dedicate the 11956 MITRE to him. We, at Memorial, feel that Monsignor loved our school in a special way. When he died, after a brief illness, on December 10, 1954, a part of Memorial died too. Monsignor had every reason to cherish this school. Shortly after assuming his duties as Superintendent of Schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1915, he conceived the construction of a free diocesan high school for girls. Its success exceeded Monsignor's fondest hopes. Offering the most extensive high school curriculum in the diocese, Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School is a great tribute to Monsignor McClancy's genius. Monsignor was a humble and prayerful man. Of all the honors he received during his life, he valued most his honorary membership in the Christian Brothers. Furthermore, Monsignor Henry Hald, his Assistant Superintendent, once related of Mon- signor McClancy that throughout his numerous journeys in the cause of education, he carried only two books: his Breviary and his Bible. It is no wonder then that the word of God rose so iiuently and spontaneously to his lips. As a priest, a pastor, and an educator, we cherish the memory of Monsignor McClancy.
