To be more definite, can you recall that oafish feeling at one of your childhood birthday parties when you sat engulfed in a labyrinth of gifts trying to register gratitude, but every endeavor was choked back by a counter-force of in- adequacy? You tried-you made several awkward attempts but they seemed so ut- terly futile. In such a predicament the Senior class now finds itself. For, to fill the bottomless chasm of thanks we owe to you, our be- loved teachers, is as pointless as to pluck the mythical golden bough to only have it flower again. But we will try: We thank you for your patience and your inspiration through those tempestuous teens g for your guidance when we needed a friend: and most of all, for the knowledge of Him, that you have bequeathed to us. Yes, that one deed outshines all the others, making their magnitude minute by comparison. Our debt cannot be expiated-except perhaps in one way-prayer. May our supplications in your behalf rise forever to the throne of Him Whom you represent. Then if there be any sky writers in the ranks of the cherubim, may they take the smoke of incense and form it into one word- Thanks. AS THE WORLD TURNS Commencement! The one Word that can thrill even the most phlegmatic per- son. What a wealth of memories it awak- ens in our long dormant minds! How vividly it prods us to recall and relish our mischievous misdemeanors or prudent ploddings in the years so lately bereaved. Through these full years of our short lives we have voyaged far and wide in the fragile craft of uncertainty and ignorance. We have beached on foreign shores where patience and preaching have illumined our time-darkened path and blazed a trail of light to right. Then we have sailed on. On o'er the vengeful billows wracked by the wrath of God in fury or calm with the sweet, pure benediction of His love. On we have ven- tured to camoufiaged clandestine ports. Here but for the God-enlightened guidance and careful counsel of the Master of our vessel we would have plunged to despised depths where hate, greed, and malice would have championed over charity and good. earnestly heeded these But we have words of warning and embarked on the final stage of our journey. We set our course straight and true to the coveted har- bor of success. Now that time has come! We have tremblingly touched this threshold. Don't let that treacherous sea draw you back to its evil depths and plunge you-filled with despair and dread-into its graveyard of failure. Throw out your arms, wind your clutching fingers round the jagged rocks or bury them deep in the slimy earth and pull yourself up, up out of the throes of the sea into the clutches of opportunity. Don't hesitate-for in hesitating all might be lost! Be determined, be resourceful, but above all, be prayerfull Then, championed by the fighting forces of Good, you cannot fail to rise gloriously and carve a living scar into the kaleidoscopic heart of the world. IXTIRIAM F. C. KELLY. Q '11, If ' . , fy 'i '52, O if 1. QQ X 3 ' PI for 6 You Can Take It With You As graduation looms threateningly, hopefully, inevitably nearer, we are faced with the startling realization that in a lit- tle while we shall be alarmingly on our own. We are facing a world of turmoil and chaos whose very foundations are in- terwoven with selfishness, ambition and a mad thirst for power. Nevertheless, armed with the unconquerable weapons of Christi- anity, we advance unafraid into this world. Indeed we have sufficient reason to be unafraid. Cause for fear lies only in the case that these shining Catholic ideals may be neglected or displaced. Guard your faith carefully, constantly: it is the great- est, most priceless treasure you can hope to own on earth. Realizing this, treat it in a manner befitting the powerful role it should most certainly play. The world is ever ready to observe your actions: see that they are worthy of you as a follower of Christ. With Him as our Friend, we can re- ceive victory gratefully and learn to accept defeat humbly. Always remember- With- out Me you can do nothing. Remember too, that your faith can never fail you, re- solve neoer to fail your faith. SISTER WILLIAM JOSEPH Precisely a year ago, the freshness of early spring was sharply clouded by the shadow that fell over Memorial, when Sister William joseph became the patient victim of a fatal illness. At last the shadow was lifted-but only a dull, aching empti- ness remained in its place when Sister passed to eternity on April 30th, Feast of the Solemnity of St. Joseph. And for those of us who worked with her, it will be supremely difficult to succumb to the demands which Time fiaunts over every human memory. Slow will we be to forget the soft, sweet smile that made the gentle gray eyes radiant with a nameless beautyg and the dismayed frowns of reproval which invariably accompanied the numberless warnings of the ultimate regret which would be encountered by all the girls who just wouldn't learn their theorems. But far more than this will we never relinquish the memory of the infinite patience, the un- tiring generosity and sacrifice which char- acterized her work. So, with reluctance, Memorial must sur- render her claim on one of her most be- loved friends and teachers. But the sanc- tity of principle, of which she was ever symbolic, in our hearts, will remain forever a living tribute to her greatness. ALOHA-FAREVVELL fCo1z!inued from page I, column 3j ginia Lowe, Eileen Fitzgerald, Alice Metz- ner, and Marie Rabatin. Thus, the great day will come and go. But despite all the celestial grandeur of the last chord, our finale shall resound forever, in our hearts, if not in reality. JUNE, 1941 LAUREL PAGES M ary Winters W .fast Gall You saw our Captain of the good ship LAUREL. You had to see her. To be specific, Madame Editor possesses an ar- dent affection for red-the brighter the bet- ter. She thrives on cokes and English muffins and is especially attracted to mu- sic-to quote classical stuffl'-she's noted far-and-wide for her vitality and 'fgol' and you continually get the impression youyd love to be wound around her little finger. After y0u've patiently waited for her she timidly approaches with Honest Injuns, I'm sorry! and you melt under her lu- minous eyes. In future decades when all else are faded memories we'll always re- member her incessant wheedling to read Mr, Blue perhaps because we think her characteristics and his foremost ones run parallel. In the same breath, may we present our editorls right hand-Marie Hartigan? Her ability to be on every floor of Memorial at the same instant still has us marvelling and her vivaciousness doesn't help us in solving our stupor. She lives to 'fsnapw scenes and we've come to believe scenes like to be snapped by her. Shels five feet two inches of Pepsi pretzels and shutters and be it known we wouldn't trade an inch of that lovable mixture of all the treas- ures in the world. The third right hand of Madame Editor is Mary Degnan. Aside from that week she dedicated to worrying about her commence- ment photos she beamed from ear to ear. Deggie's a maker of the art of merry mak- ing and you usually find yourself roaring over a week-old joke-so contagious is her laugh. Catherine Bell is the last but far from least of the Senior quartet. Her eyes ex- press more in a glance than oceans of words ever could. Sophisticated from her toeless pumps to her raven ringlets, we caught her with her hair down one after- noon as she indulged in tennis. With these few words we send a prayer along the silent way to Him-a prayer for added suc- cess and happiness in their respective fields. DESIGN FOR LIVING Undoubtedly, we can, each and every one of us, recall, the days before yesterday when we stared with wide-eyed admiration at Hgrown upsf' We listened intently to discussions that made our little minds swim in a sea of uncomprehending thoughts. But ideals were ever towering on gilded pedestals as we wiled away contented. happy hours in dreamland-capriciously deciding we would be this, we would be that when we grew up. Our time has come--no longer is it ours to dream, ours it is now to live. A new horizon is before us, sometimes dark clouds shall obstruct our view, but we shall trudge on, intrepid pilgrims, until at last in adora- tion we kneel forever at the shrine which lies beyond. This is no quaking castle of blocks built with an infant's fumbling hands,', it is the eternal home of the God we know, we love, we serve. Our ideals are with us yet, seeds care- fully cultured have blossomed and one lily, calm and serene, graces the highest altar in the cathedral of the blue. Mary, the purest, simplest child ever to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, earth's most perfect woman. Our Lady was Hgrown upgl' we, the Catholic women of tomorrow must like- wise be so. No longer must we hurry hither and thither, seeking to grasp the un- attainable soap bubbles of our childish fancies, we must gather to ourselves and our loved ones the things we can take with us. Patience must overrule our petulant fretfulness at the perversity of life's many obstinate triiies, we must steer the control wheel of our emotions with a steady hand guided by a mature mind and the grace of God. Our Queen smiles on us this June and with our hands in hers we will toddle quite gracefully to the feet of her Son. But all this is not accomplished in an hour, a day, and not without the Cross. To walk this holy road of royalty was our Lady's rightg it is our privilege. SOUVENIR I pressed a tiny flower 'Twixt the pages of My memory book. It was pure as light And stately as a queen. It bowed its head As if 'twere wont to die. Then I crushed it-trembling still And glistening with my tears. Someday an unseen impetus Will move me look again Upon this llow'r of days gone by. I shall not find it crisp Or dead-I know- For when I bid it come to life My heart has said ...Itwill! MARY WINTERS, '4l. lfaurel Czfpreaths Perfect Lady ...............,...... JUNE, 1941 l. A U R E l. PAGE 5 cc cc 44 CLAIRE KAMINSKI With the amazing fiow of energy, vitality and versatility that is so characteristic of our Class President, Claire entered Memorial and entered our hearts. . Her active spirit has manifested itself time and again, proof being found in her interest in the Glee Club. her skill and striking originality in the Art Club. These, however, are only two of the many fields which have witnessed the endeavors and triumphs we have come to know so well. True, we have appreciated her tireless activity on our behalf. Yet it is in the ca- pacity of a friend that the true and lasting qualities of her deeper nature have shone forth. In work as well as in play she was ever equal to the task she found before her. With an unassuming grace, a quiet dignity and a very decided manner of capability she took the helm of the class and kept it on the steady course. Certainly it may be said of her 'fshe did all things wellf, And now that the time of parting has come, there is little we can say besides fffarewellf' and a sincere heartfelt wish that the future may bestow upon her the suc- cess she has known with us-the happiness that seems inevitably hers. VIRGINIA LOWE A scattering of names on the board-fifty and some few more of us dashing in and out could put 203 into quite a dither at any moment.-But always in the midst, cool, calm and collected stands Ginny,', our ever ready willing and able little class Prexy. Not only is Virginia an outstanding mem- ber of our class but also of the school. While the rest of us were still feeling the effects of that eternally trite swimming pool on the roof she was ffmaking a name as an effervescent member of the hockey team tshe is captain of the squadb. Since our sophomore days we have been eagerly watching our Ginny putting with deft ease a difficult ball through a certain little bas- ket, scoring victories for Memorial. However, our President is a good sport in more than athletics, she is a regular girl, capable and dependable with an endearing smile all her own. Always and ever, she is doing something for somebody and when ZO3 issues an urgent S. O. S. we organize a searching party and go Ginny Lowe hunt- ing -itls become quite a game. Now with the inevitable parting ap- proaching, we say Adieu Ginny, know- ing her indomitable spirit will live in our hearts. vi- E Scltolctstzic Satellites just as it is natural for mortals to be gregarious, it is equally characteristic for them to select leaders. Although we con- sider ourselves too young to be prosaically classed as mortals, we, the Senior class. have chosen to place these girls high upon the pedestal of our esteem. Therefore in the following paragraphs we shall attempt to extol the virtues of our delectae -the Class Presidents. - MARIE RABATIN To taste the flavor of youth and gaiety and yet enjoy the essence of sweetness and capa- bility, simultaneously, is a rare pleasure for Memorial. And who indeed made this de- , light possible? None other than our Marie Rabatin, Class President, and, may we add, class funster. As chief executive of 317. Marie achieved remarkable affirmation of her suggestions and decisions. Never did her judgment fail to bring a stir of ap- proval from her fellow students and charges. Mariels practical earnestness was incessantly challenged by that merry twin- kle in her eye and her ardent interest in school frolics. Yet, behind that cheery smile was the undaunted leader necessary for Memorial to carry on. Indeed, not a few of the solved problems are due to her stable reasoning. JANE CRAVEN There is something utterly different about jane. There is some- thing that places on her the stigma of lead- ership, and about her the aura of friendliness. 2 She's of medium height, slight build, she has meticulously-curled brown hair and laughing blue eyes. But perhaps you doubt our veracity. Perhaps you think these are words-idle words. We submit a proof. Jane has held the presidential chair for four successive terms. Two years have surrendered their cares, troubles and executive problems to her and like putty in a sculptor's hand they have been successfully moulded. She has her own philosophy on trouble-she pre- tends it isn't there and upon second glance it usually isn't. Can she take bantering? Madame Pres- ident bears derision's stigma on the point of a certain young man lsee class notesj and still she fiashes a good natured smile. She loves people, music, chocolate bars, and straw hats. We are wont to say farewell, but we know that her memory like a peb- ble thrust into a stream will send its rip- ples forever into the blue and a horizon of happiness. R va xx as ALICE MAE METZNER She's as sparkling as sun on crystal. She has no inhibitions that ac- company moods. She is Alice Metzner of Room 210. She loathes affecta- tion and superfluity of detail. She loves the simple things in life. Swimming is an obsession with her. She admires horses but is a bit skeptical about riding them. She has a quiet brand of in- telligence. The French and math clubs are pleasant sessions when perked up by her scintillating wit. She has hazel eyes and bro-wn hair, that has the sweeping softness of tufted sum- mer clouds. When reading she prefers a light diet. You will seldom, if ever, find her digesting a book that is drama with a broad Ha. It is her opinion that fishing should be done with nets-not hooks. It is more humane. She is not superstitious, but, you rarely see her when she is not wearing blue. Blue in any shade or tint is her favorite hue. She is at home indoors or out. And she has that unusual gift of making you feel at home when in her presence. EILEEN FITZGERALD Without any of the formality she detests- meet Eileen Fitzgerald, President of 202. Hear the slow arrest- ing voice that verges on , , a drawl. See the V A' f , I QQ loitering smile that .2 1 echoes laughter in crinkling green eyes. Surely, you sense the magnetic something that demands further acquaintance. She is like the tumbling tumbleweed- traveling with an effortless abandon. The ease with which she accomplishes so many things is nothing short of amazing. If you, in a weak moment, should accompany her -the territory covered should render you useless for ensuing activity. Her schedule for the day must read like what not to do for a rest cure. just to give you a vague idea consider yourself first at the Guidance Room, then at the French Club and so far into the afternoon. Appalling thought is it not? But to Ei- leen, living is a joy-and to work is to live. Therefore, because she gets a kick out of doing things, she is finished with a thing before others can figure out an approach.. This vitality, this glow of living, is Eileen's charm. Are you a Dodger fan-Well, then, see the second row, third from the left in the bleachers? Don't look now, but that's Eileen. PAGE 6 L A U R E L JUNE, 1941 Samoa CLASS Q. v -3? AHEARN. MARGARET ST. CAROL YOUNG, '42, FUTURAMA -OR SENIOR SCHEDULE C1951j This morning I was late for school but not too late for my waffles and coffee which are served to those who cannot arrive at the regular hour. During the French class we had an interesting television program. Af- ter that there was a dip in the pool. Lunch was served on the roof garden and that was followed by a siesta in the Lounge. Whoever heard of a Senior getting right down to work after eating! I had so much fun in Latin, for you see it is compulsory for all Virgil students and teachers to come to class in Roman togas and headbands. We all look very picturesque. In fact, all our classes are enjoyable. It's just too comfortable for words to rest in those club chairs while we delve into higher mathematics. If the mind must be active, the body must rest. And the library has a device which will, by merely pressing a VIGIL LIGHT He was the littlest altar boy Who came Unto my heart's high altar And lit the flame Of my desire. The tiny spark took light Kindled my timid soul And made The whole Of it a bright white flame. I pray Thee, Heart of Jesus Let not this tlre smoulder May it grow Still bolder Until I am consumed. EILEEN BERTON, l41. button, place the book on the top shelf right on your library table. There certainly is no Royal Road to Learning. ALICE P. STEWART. PAGE 20 LAUREL JUNE, 1941 PLAY - RITES By Miriam F. C. Kelly Question: As you ponder o'er your school day memoirs which Thespian first-nighter did you enjoy most? ANNE ELLIS When I was a freshie in IB Silas Lapham I went to see- That woeful tale of a poor young buck Who wished to rise and had some luck. If you'd know the play I liked the best It's Silas Laphaml' above the rest. JULIET BENACK No other play so captivated my interest and carried me back to the days of chivalry and gallantry as did ffDorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall. The scenery, acting and above all, the atmosphere were superb. Or- chids to Dorothy Vernon ! MARION FLEESON Of all the plays presented in Memorial I enjoyed 'fThe Tailor-Made Man the best. The rise of an enterprising tailor's appren- tice provided a plot which combined with the witty dialogue, appropriate scenery and the cream of the T hespians served to make it most entertaining and different. ELLEN HEALY Because it typified the prevailing spirit of light-heartedness of the girls of Me- morial, the ffRise of Silas Lapham was my favorite offering of the Thespians. KATHLEEN GLYNN Mary, Queen of Scots, was the most awe-inspiring play presented by our talent- ed T hespians during my stay in Memorial. Every phase in the life of the tragic Scot- tish queen was dramatized amid a spectacle of riotous color, pageantry and gorgeous costuming. The memory of this drama never fails to awaken in me fond remi- niscences of enjoyment at Memorial. MONA FITZPATRICK ' I think that Dorothy Vernon of Had- don Hall was the 'ftopswl It was not only humorous but also thoroughly entertaining! ANNE CERVINI The charm and utter simplicity of the story plus the excellent performances of every member of the cast made Victorian one of the most delightful and enjoyable plays I ever attended in Memorial. MARY MAGUIRE Our first play, Mary, Queen of Scotsf' thrilled me with its gorgeous settings and clever character portrayal. Unfortunately, however, I was so captivated by our glam- orous usherettes that I lost the drift of the story. Don't Send Your Daughter on the Underground Mucky, sweaty dampness that wracks your frail body with chills and brings beads of perspiration to your agonized brow-the Subway Station-commonly accepted as the mode of travel by the masses, and you, be- ing one of the mess of mass must tread its barren bleakness with your fellow sufferers. Along the sides, a fantasy of color . . . disgusting- looking, moronic children crying for an equally sickening breakfast food . . . a vir- ginal nymph surrounded by strands of mac- aroni . . . a dissipated-looking bleached blonde, criterion of a hair beautifier . . . and over all, permeating your very soul with its essence, comes wafted the stench of garlic. 'fTurn around, you say! Sir, have you ever pondered the possibility of a victim's revolving inside the iron maiden? You do get the point. Then a long stop of the lurching move- ment between stations . . . hushed, tomb- like silence . . . a discreet embarrassed cough . . . an ever so faint crackle of paper . . . and on your part as the traveler-an uncontrollable, frenzied desire to giggle. Now the clacking wheels start again and here, at last your destination. The vault- like doors roll back and a seething blob of humanity is belched onto the station. Queer . . . but after four long years of this a faint nostalgia starts to wrench the pit of your stomach. Why . . . suppose you board at college! That would mean just a hop across the campus to classes. NO-NO! NEVER! Traveling on the subway gives you an alertness, a wide-awake feeling to- ward your fellow-man! Life without the subway is Sears without Roebuck, Mont- gomery without Ward. As long as it rolls along you'll roll with it-struggling to the bittersweet end. How shall we face the farewells which will be ours when the fu- ture has become the present? May we, as those from whom we shall catch the torch, carry these vignettes of the past in a mem- ory so vivid that tendrils of reality, strong as.flesh and blood, shall bind them forever to our pastime and our happiness. Within these cloistered walls you will find a work which, lovingly and zealously undertaken, will reap glorious rewards for you, now and when you become a 'fkeepsake of Heaven. We, the departing servants of Memo- rial's Crusade, regretfully release the reins which we have held for four short years and proffer them to your eager hearts. We surrender them with a fervent prayer for your success in this beautiful venture for Christ's faithful. Into your outstretched hands we place the valiant, fiaming torch of truth, sym- bolical of Christ's Divine Providence. May you proudly bear it high, high above the surging masses lest its flame be smothered and die. Raise this fiery brand of God be- fore you to light your way and blaze a trail of success for Christfs glory! Memories of pleas- ant hours spent in our Crusade Castle working for our missions or delighting in a motion picture portraying life in other lands and on our hearts we find, engraved indelibly, an infinitely beautiful love for God and an appreciation of and enthusiasm for the perpetration of His Holy Mission Crusade! SPURT SCOUPS i by Jean Selts As we looked in on a soft ball practice the other day, we realized the void that would be left by some of the graduates this term. Quite a few girls have piled up en- viable sports records in their two or four years among us. The various school teams will be hard put to replace them at first. Virginia Lowe, Elizabeth Sheehan, Ann and Catherine Dwyer and Mary Valentine are among the notables. Betty Sheehanls position as forward and later as a guard on the basketball team was rather an anticlimax to her brilliant playing in Queen of All Saints. An im- portant member during her two years at Memorial, Betty was elected Captain of the basketball team in her senior year. For a year she upheld the defensive of the hockey team as goalie. It would be rather difficult to decide whether 'fGinniell Lowe played harder on the hockey or basketball team. With three years experience on the basketball court, and four years on the hockey field, Gin- nie was associated with such 'fgreatsw as Pat Finn, Mary Bisdale, Evelyn Kane, Do- lores Bo-land and Anita Dean. To cap her success HGinnie was unanimously given the captaincy of the hockey team. The Sisters Dwyer, Ann and the less serious Catherine, took to the same sports, only with different degrees of intensity. Though manager of the hockey team and guard on the basketball team Ann's real advocation is tennis. As an advanced stu- dent in the art of wielding the racket, Ann does pretty well. Catherine sticks only to hockey, even after three and a half years. The basketball team got some added height in Mary Valentine, five foot eight guard. It also added a little color, with an- other brunette among so many blondes on the court. Mary says little but makes her- self felt on those fast plays. No account of the players would be com- plete without a note on Anne Davoren. As right half on the hockey field, she too played with the Memorial uimmortalsy' mentioned above, absorbing some of their style. Her most important position was that of manager of the basketball team, doing a good bit of the work and cheering but shar- ing in none of the glory of the girls' hard won praise. The orchestra plays, the students hum and everybody is happy. Thus we have a system of co-operative musicians. Mr. Beggs, our maestro, is re- sponsible for the enthusiasm, the rejuvena- tion of our attempts to render harmoni- ously our wide scope of selections. Take your pick. We are in turn, classi- cists and we are not exactly allergic to popular tunes. We do any and everything, and we hope we do it well. Mr. Beggs, himself is an accomplished violinist. It was he who composed UMe- morial, our graduation theme song. He runs the gauntlet, insofar as he receives raw material and turns them into finished products. Many of our orchestra members never held the instrument of their choice in their hands 11ntil they decided to enter under his potent tutoring. Wanda Wojciechowska, the Magic Keysn of Memorial is President of our so- ciety, while Kathleen Kane shares her re- sponsibilities in the capacity of vice-presi- dent. They have done a commendable task. We wish to take this last opportunity to acknowledge our appreciation of their suc- cessful attempts in making both our plays and assemblies the pleasant interludes that they were. JUNE, 1941 LAtUI2El. PAGE 25 On Being An Object of Scorn Yes, but don't say it, whisper it. I am one of those loathesome people known to scornful music teachers as monotones. Our voices are the Hmissing links and Hlost chordsl' of vocal music, we are the afor- gotten men and the Udespised racef' When a frightened freshman the very word was enough to send shivers chasing up and down my scales, and the music room doors seemed like a wide-open mouth, singing, in three part harmony, of the horrors within. And vocal test! The fearful hammering of my noisy heart-beats resounded in my cranial cavity just the way my non-existent voice should have, and all the diaphragm breathing in the world couldnlt bring that phantom up out of my throat. But it could not be ever thus. Some time after the commencement of my junior year, the worm turned. I was no longer the slave, but the master, of my voice, ghost though it was. It was indeed, emancipation in the truest sense of the word. Now any contemptuous mention of my minus sing- ing qualities sends me into spasms of joy and pride. After all, it is only the truly great who are criticized. It has always been a source of great wonder to me that something that isn't could have a name. But I have been as- sured that if I had a voice it would be first soprano. Must be like those dog whistles that are so high that you can't hear them. Which is the! reason why I donlt go off by myself on a lonely prairie to practice. The coyotes would howl in self-defense. Some- one once said that unheard melodies are sweeter than any others. This is perhaps why any music class that I am in is as- ln Retrospect Life is just A melody- lts notes Are played By time, At best, a Haunting symphony That echoes Like fading chimes Thru the years. CATHERINE BELL, '41, sured of perfect tone. For the sake of pos- terity, humanity, and the Anti-Noise Cru- sade, I have kept my peace, but no one, most of all my music teacher, seems to realize the favor I have done her. Sometimes when all is still, I hear an in- ner voice which tells me that there's still a chance, that heredity and teachers and off-pitch notes may all be wrong. just think-maybe I, too,-Wait. C' CON TRASTS The Dawn that purples in the East Beholds the earth's awakening- And sees its frigid darkness change To life and youth and hope and spring. Great cotton clouds move slowly O'er the sky's sapphire breast, And emerald grasses gaily dance In diamond dew-drops dressed. The breeze that shivers thru the field Where crystal brooklets lie, Sees rolling hills cast purple shades Forsythia gold against the sky. 'Tis Spring!-and once more man can claim The celestial chanting of the thrush, The scarlet glory of the morn, The crimson'd beauty of the dusk. Yes-all the earth should raise its voice In symphonies of hope and birth, For Spring is here with youth and peace And magic gypsy mirth. Yet naught save coldness comes to me And fierce hostility from man. For me, no part in Nature's birth, Her hope, not mine to understand My life is empty, even now, When beauty smiles on all the land, For mine is great and mortal shame- I'm not a Dodger fan!
