“MEMORIES” BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL 25 OSBORNE STREET JOHNSTOWN, PA. 15902 1979-1980 Dedication Super Spirited Seniors Spirit of Youth Spirit of Leadership Spirit of Involvement § Spirit of Creativity Spirit of Competition 3UIIII Giving Farewell THANKS We would like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks to: Miss Signorino — for all that she's done to help us to prepare this book for you. Mr. William Cameron — for everything! Fr. Bunn and Fr. McCamley. the faculty and staff of Bishop McCort High School — for their endless guidance and cooperation. Pam Bender — for her ever-flowing pen. Donna Sakmar and Mr. Concannon — for their in-a-bind photos. Mr. Kirkpatrick. Mr. Defazio, Mr. Maier. the band, and all who helped with our assembly — it was great! Cover's — for putting up with our hectic picture days. Baskin Robbins and Harmony Singing Society — for their intended contributions. Kathy Sarosi — for her short notice, quick typing jobs. WITH SINCERE APPRECIATION AND DEEP GRATITUDE WE, THE YEARBOOK STAFF, DEDICATE THIS 1979-1980 EDITION OF MEMORIES TO MISS MARIE F. MULVEHILL WHO HAS GIVEN FREELY OF HER WISDOM, HER KNOWLEDGE AND HER TIME TO THE STUDENTS OF BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE PAST SEVENTEEN YEARS. Bishop McCort High School is my intellectual home. I feel that I am dstinguished company in the pages of MEMORIES, for I met Bishop McCort as a young child in parochial school. I came to Monsignor Thomas Cawley. Bishop McCort's foundhg principal, for guidance when I began my higher education; and I was encouraged to try my wings at teaching by the second principal. Monsignor Linford Greinader. Teaching the young has kept me young mentaly. Each year of teaching I have used drfferent and fresher literary materials; materials thot have kept me in touch with and intellectuaSy involved with contemporary trends and ideas. As I have grown along with McCort, I realize that there are only two kinds of learning: book learning and “heort learning . The former needs no definition. The latter accrues with Iving and experiencing. Bishop McCort High School has risen to the top in this area because we offer both types of leorrtng. We offer something more. We offer the ethical foundation on which to use both the “book learning and the “heart learning framework of our lives Socrates has said that learning need not be painful. It certainly is not at McCort. Each day we are all learning and preparing for the future. Each day that posses only repeats the axiom: the past Is prologue.” Marie F. Principal $8 Bishop McCort A D M N I S T R A T I O N Pope John Paul II Rev. Martin D. McCamle Assistant Principal Bishop James J. Hogan Monsignor Thomas K. Me bon. Superintendent Schools Much has been given to us, and much is therefore expected from us. As members of the Bishop McCort Family, all of us, administrators, faculty, staff, and student body, share in a unique experience of living and learning. Knowledge, not hate or wealth or power, is the passkey to our future life as citizens of our world. Self-discipline, holiness of life, and concern for all of God's creatures, constitute the combination which will give entry to the kingdom of heaven. As we work and learn together, may our hopes and dreams be realized in this life and next. Our years at Bishop McCort have brought countless opportunities for grace. Have we used them well? Are our families, neighbors, and friends closer to God because of our presence? If so, may God bless us even more. If not, may God have mercy on us. Our way is the way of virtue, difficult and arduous. It calls for practice, not by the hour, but continuous, day and night, so long as we live. May the ideals of our school, the dreams we dream, the love we share in Christ, and the virtue of our lives lead us safely along the path of this life and bring us to the heavenly home prepared for us. Fr. Bunn “One of the most personally rewarding aspects of education for me is the witnessing of the steady growth and development of the students, both as Individuals and as a class. Each student body and each separate class over the seventeen years that I have been at Bishop McCort has had its own distinctive personality. It takes some time to adjust to the differences and to understand the strengths of each class and I think it important that one not compare one class with another. I have enjoyed my association with all the students this year and particularly with the graduating class. I feel that chorally It has been a most successful, rewarding and happy year. I am proud of the wonderful work and the outstanding accomplishments of our students. They have set high goals for themselves and I have every confidence that they shall achieve them. Fr. Term Paper Blues Don’t be surprised if you’re walking down the hall and see a senior with his or her head bent in sorrow. There is the smell of term paper in the air. The topics are chosen and the students are seen in nearly all the community libraries desperately trying to find fifteen sources. Who knows what is to come in the near future? Our first due date was Monday. October 29. and did anyone know how to write a proper bibliography? Not to worry. Seniors, soon it will be December 17. and we will all walk into English with a proud look on our faces. Whether wide awake, or limp and weary, ten typed pages of two months work is carried in our hands. At long last the term is over and our only consolation is that someday the Juniors will get theirs! David Zubay SPECIAL AWARDS Every year, the Tribune Democrat awards a student with the title Scholar-Athlete. This year, the recipient was very deserving: DAVE THUEL. He was especially outstanding in the scholar department. Dave was first in his class, and, has maintained a 4.0 quality point average for nine straight marking periods. As an athlete, especially concerning football, Dave was a two-year letterman. He played guard and was on the first team his senior year. Fitness, of both mind and body, is important; scholar-athlete Dave Thuel is a fine example. Superstar DON RECTOR was the fifth Crusher in a row to win the Point Stadium Award. An excellent performance by Don in the Vo-Tech game was basically responsible for his award. Don ran 89 yards, untouched, for a touchdown. This obviously was not his only accomplishment enroute to the award. Don was nominated two out of three months before the final award was given. Don Rector is truly an outstanding all-around athlete. The talent of our girls was outstanding. As Individual players, they're great. As a team they were incredible! Misty water color mem'ries of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind; smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time rewritten ev'ry line? If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we? Could we? jm'ries may be beautiful, and yet, what's too painful to remember we simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were; The way we were. We Are Happy And Excited About The Outcome Of Our Efforts. We Hope We Have Accomplished All We Ventured To Do: To Combine The Events Of A Very Fulfilling Year Into One Book In A Way That You, The Reader, Will Appreciate And Treasure. But, We Are Also Saddened By The Conclusion Of Our Responsibilities. It Was Hard To Take Into Consideration What All Of You Wanted, What You Felt Was Most Worth Remembering. It Was Not To Be Our Book, But Yours. We Hope It Has Lived Up To Your Expectations. It's Hard To Say Goodbye To All Of The Friends We've Made During This Past Year. Without All Of You This Book Would Not Have Been Possible. All Of The Assemblies, Dances, Pep Rallies Would Not Have Occurred, And There Would Be Nothing To Fill Our Pages. And So To Express Our Deep Appreciation To Each And Every One Of You, We'd Like To Take This Time To Say — Thanks For The Memories! crrr V
