OUR ATHLETES The Second Annual Athletic Awards Banquet was held in Luer ' s Cafeteria on May 1. Guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Richard Rosenthal, for- mer All- American at Notre Dame, and Fort Wayne Piston, In his speech Mr. Rosenthal stressed the need of a strong character as well as a strong body in athletics. Awards were given to varsity, reserve, and freshman players. As a special event of the evening, Mike Burns was presented the Most Valuable Player Award in basketball, and Joe Lebrato the M.V.P. Award in football. Er. Edmund, Mrs. Schauer, Mr. Schauer, Mr. Rosenthal, and Fr. Conan reflect on the words of Coach Gaughn. To honor students who main- tained the honor roll four consecu- tive times, a scholastic awards ban- quet was held on May 10 in Luers Cafeteria. Monsignor Joseph Crowley, edi- tor of OUR SUNDAY VISITOR, served as guest speaker. In his address Monsignor emphasized the need of a desire for learning, will power, and cooperation. Like knights of old who received armor at their investing ceremonies, so were our Knights pre sented with monograms symbolizing achieve- ment. Msgr. Feltes, Msgr. GRADUATION HIGHLIGHTS Another first in our school and the climax of a high school career; Bishop Pursley presents the first diploma to Sheila Gerardot. According to definition, graduation is the act of com- pleting a course of study in a school . But graduation entails much more than is implied. Accompanying the graduation are retreats, exams. Senior Class Day, and the Baccalaure- ate Mass and Breakfast. The class of ' 62 went through this age-old tradition, but will always be a part of Bishop Luers. An important day in the final weeks before graduation was the senior re- treat, with Fr. Norman emphasizing his point. Following the retreat, seniors diligently pre- pared for final exams, as demonstrated by Sandy Gitter. The end of exams brings joy to the seniors, and they live it up and entertain for the Senior Class Day Program. L. to R. : J. Bush, M. Burns, D. McKay, D. Brodrick. One of the more serious events of the seniors ' last days was the Baccalaureate Mass. Preparations for graduation were climaxed by the dress rehearsal. Above, T. Kitch and S. Ottenweller adjust each other ' s tie, and J. Wall decides how to wear his cap. The first graduation exercises of Bishop Luers were held in the school auditorium on the evening of June 3, 1962. The Most Rev. Leo A. Pursley conferred the diplomas and awards, and was assisted by the Very Rev. J. William Lester, Superintendent of Diocesan Schools. The Valedictory and Salutatory were given by Dan Brodrick and Connie Kaminski. Awards and scholarships were presented, and Kay Steinacker, Lucia Talarico, and Sandy Worman were recognized for four year perfect attendance. 66 195 65 ' 64 63 jr f? 1 ROW 1: D. Lundquist, D. M Many touchdowns were the result of hard work during the Elmhurst game. Here Jim Still catches a fine pass to boost our score once more. This year the mighty Luers football squad got off to a dynamic start with a Jamboree victory against North Side, high- ly rated in the pre-season. The glory was short-lived-just four days to be exact, un- til the first scheduled game which was against South Side. After three quarters of tremendous defense, the Archers finally broke through, handing the Knights their first loss in the City Series and of the gridiron season. The next two games in succession, with South Bend St. Joseph and Roger Bacon, Cincinnati, were also dropped. But Luers came storming back to the city to meet the Trojans of Elm- hurst. The Knights were too much for the Trojans and overpowered them for their first City Series victory of the season. This glory was temporary, too, as the next three games, with Culver, Central Catholic, and Chesterton were also defeats for the Knights. But these set-backs could have led up to only one thing-thebig City Series battle with the Central Tigers. Luers was slated as the underdogs as usual, but to the astonishment of the fans, tamed the Tigers tor the second time in their two meetings. From the momentum gained with this triumph, the Knights were able to put down the New Haven Bulldogs the following week. These final victories en- abled the Knights to finish the season in the Reign of Glory with which they started. Barry Jacobs ' L J. Rauch J. Still D. Lundquist T.
