Patient when we were impatient with regulations ... Understanding when we were difficult to understand . . . Generous when we were inclined to be selfish . . . Kind when we were not so deserving of your kindness . . . We are grateful to you. In the years that lie ahead, when we meet young people who will be like we are today, we hope to remember the virtues you exemplified in your dealings with us. Therefore, we, the first grad- uating class of Bishop Ludden High School, dedi- cate our first yearbook to you . . . Monsignor William J. Taylor. We, the Class of ' 66, would also like to express our gratitude to our two bishops— The Most Reverend Walter A. Foery, D.D. Bishop of Syracuse The Most Reverend David F. Cunningham, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Syracuse Dear Members of the Class of 1966 I am pleased to extend to you my sincere congratulations upon the successful completion of your high school careers. This is a noteworthy achievement , in which your families, your teachers, and your classmates rejoice with you. You are a very special group, the charter class of Bishop Ludden High School. You have grown with the new school, and in a unique way your mark will always be upon Bishop Ludden. I pray that the mark of Bishop Ludden High School will ever be upon you, too. You should be different for the kind of education you have received. The daily contact with priest-teachers, the Sisters of Sant Francis, and dedicated laymen in a God-centered school should be evident in you. And I can assure you, that If you remain loyal to the principles taught you at Bishop Ludden, you will ever be a credit to your families, your teachers, your classmates and yourselves. The motto Bishop Ludden chose for his coat of arms was Justice and Peace . If your lives are characterized by justice, giving to God and to every man his due, you will know peace, here and hereafter. With every good wish to each of you, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, BISHOP OF SYRACUSE For many years the Sisters of St. Francis have been identified with Catholic Education in the Syracuse area and in other dioceses of the United States, including Hawaii. The success of the graduates of the schools con ducted by these Sisters is definite evidence of the distinct con- tribution that the Franciscan community has made to education. Mother M. Jolenta accepted the invitation of Bishop Foery to staff Bishop Ludden High School. Our Alma Mater was composed for us by Monsignor William J. Shannon. The composer came to Ludden and taught a select group of students how to sing it and, then_- presented it to the entire student body. In the year 1962, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse celebrated the 75th anniversary of its canonical erection by the Holy See. On this occasion Bishop Foery inaugurated a drive for funds with which to expand the secondary school facilities of the diocese. In three areas - Syracuse, Rome, and Binghamton - appeals were made to the Catholic and non-Catholic Com- munity alike for participation in this program. In Syracuse the new high school was named in honor of Bishop Patrick Ludden, first Bishop of Syracuse. Administrators adopted as the official seal of the school the coat of arms of the first Bishop with the motto Justitia et Pax - Justice and Peace. Yet it is indeed difficult to attempt a listing of those to whom we are grateful, for fear that we may inadvertantly forget someone. Certainly we are grateful to our parents for the many, untold sacrifices which they made in order to send us to a Catholic high school. Then, too, our pastors deserve a word of thanks for their continued contribu- tions to our education and their interest in our welfare, both spiritual and academic. The drive for the funds which made possible the building of our school could not have been a success had it not been for the many men and women who trudged from door to door throughout the various parishes of the diocese, appealed for con- tributions, and then returned to make collections. To them we say a special Thank you for their generous contribution of their time and their energy. Our appreciation is likewise extended to the members of the community who contributed their hard earned money so that we could have a good school to attend. Finally, we are grateful to everyone who is a part of Bishop Ludden High School - our principal, vice-principal, teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, nurse, and all staff members, secretarial, custodial, and cafeteria - for all that each and everyone has done for us. We are leaving Bishop Ludden High School but we carry with us the mark of its first graduation class. For this we will always be grateful. Faculty Quiclino our rirst steps ■• OUR PRINCIPAL, Very Rev. We, the students of Bishop Ludden High School walk the same roads, ride the same busses, play the same games, and sing the same songs as our friends and neighbors, but we come to a school that is very different. In the center of our school is the chapel. Here, the Son of God re- sides in the Blessed Sacrament. If we so desire we may come and con- fide to Him our sorrows and our joys, our failures and our successes, our plans and our achievements. He, in turn, gives us the courage, the grace, and the love that we need for each day ' s living. We, the first graduating class, know that one thing is necessary for happy living and that is Love. So we pray with Pope John XXni: Grant us, O Lord, that loving You We may love each other, and Live according to Your sacred law. ifv ti iSimi S -: ' . f Seniors UJtjwno took those T ii ' st St£pS. Three years ago the sophomore class at Bishop Ludden was given a challange. To- day as seniors, this class can look back proudly on the many customs and standards that it set up for the school. This year ' s leaders, pictured above, have fulfilled their responsibilities but there were other leaders of the first two years who should not be forgotten. The challenge has been met and congratulations are due to the Class of ' 66 - it has done a great job. Sports Sports are a keynote activity at Ludden. For the past three years Ludden athletes have been taking great steps forward in intramural and inter-scholastic sports activities. During Ludden ' s first year the initial basketball, baseball, and cheerleading teams were set up. Cross-country and track were organized later, as were vari- our types of intramurals. Ludden ' s second sports ' year was basically like its first except there were more sports for girls. The boys ' teams really picked up speed during this sec- ond historic year, and our basketball team won its way into the Diocesan play- offs. Again, this year, Bishop Ludden has taken more steps forward. Football was established and the boys gave it all they had. The basketball team really ran wild this year and was within two wins of the Diocesan Championship. More intra- murals were set up this past year, including archery for the boys and swimming for the girls. Perhaps the greatest step forward was taken a few months ago when Ludden joined the Central New York Cities League, placing our school in league competi- tion. A special recognition should go out to the athletic directors, coaches and physical education teachers who have helped propel Ludden into the athletic spot- light. Yes, a first step forward has been taken in athletics at Bishop Ludden and if predictions are true, many more forward steps will follow. 1 Athletic Director: Father Major Coaches-(CLOCK VISE): Mr. Dehm, Mr. McCHiin, Fr. The players, most of whom had never played before, found out just what they could do on the football field. One of the players commented on the St. Mary ' s game in this way, We never knew if we could do it or not before today, but now we know what we are capable of doing. These words re- flected the thoughts of the coaches, who also, did not know if we were capable of winning or not, and it made Mr. Ludovico and Mr. LaRochelle very proud of their work with the newly formed team when they won.
