Foreword In our short but pleasant stay at Loughlin we have no doubt attained many goals and won many friends. In this yearbook, we, the Editors and Staff, have attempted to establish a permanent record of those events which have made our four years at Loughlin so memorable. At the same time, we are proud in- deed to have as our theme the centen- ary of Our Lady's miraculous appear- ance at Lourdes. The hope of the world lies in increased devotion to Mary. Per- haps, the pictures on these few pages will inspire us to rededicate ourselves to the Immaculate Conception, a price- less friend and ally against Satan and the forces of evil. Entrance to Auditorium and Gymnasium Most Reverend Bryan J. McEnlegart., D.D Bishop of Brooklyn Dedication On June 14, 1957, the burdens of the Diocese of Brooklyn were placed on the shoulders of Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart, The fourth Bishop, successor to three great Bishops, John Loughlin, Charles E. McDonnell and Thomas E. Molloy, found awaiting him an anxious staff of learned and indus- trious clergy. His Excellency also discovered thousands of Religious, priests, Brothers and Sisters, laboring un- selfishly and devotedly in a great school system ranging from nursery school to college and university. The months following his in- stallation as Bishop have found him engaged in the further de- velopment and improvement of an already outstanding diocese. He has assumed the responsibilities of his high oilice with confidence, being assured of the willing and heart- felt cooperation on all sides. Previously, Bishop McEntegart had been especially active in the field of education. His career has included terms as a professor at Fordham University, sixth Bishop of Ogdensburg and rector of the Catholic University of America, Washington, D. C. Particularly endearing to the hearts of all Loughlin men should be the realization that the newly appointed Bishop is a graduate of Manhattan College, which makes him one of us, a Brothers' Boy. He is also an alliliated member of the Christian Brothers, allowing him to partake of all the spiritual privileges and benefits of the Order. It is with deep respect and great pleasure that we, the' staff, dedicate the yearbook of the Senior Class of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, the 1958 Loughlinite, to you, Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart. 5 ft K X H X 2- is if: .4 3 ff-K 2' 'i 1 . . The first centenary of the apparitions at Lourdes in 1858 has world-wide signihcance. It is a mighty attesta- tion to the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of mankind. The apparitions were not of a purely private and individual character, but became highly important events emphasizing and confirming the solemn proclamation by Pope Pius IX of the dogma of the Immaculate Con- ception of Mary a short four years previously. Thus, they have initiated and exerted an unforeseen influence on the whole religious life, at least of Catholics, over the whole world during the past one hundred years. They have also reached into the life of many non- Catholics. The promulgation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the year 1854 by Pope Pius IX caused a storm of excitement, opposition, violent protests and a veritable literary warfare from the ranks of non- Catholics and infidels against the Church and Mary. This storm had not yet subsided when the exciting reports of the miraculous events in the hidden-away town in the French Pyrenees reached the outer world. On February 11, 1858, fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous left her one-room hovel in search for fuel. Bernadette, her younger sister Toinette, and a neighbor's child walked over to Massabielle, the old rock. Asthmatic Bernadette, at first hesitant to join her companions in wading across the river, finally de- cided to accompany them. She was about to remove her stockings when she heard a rushing wind. Perplexed, she looked about, saw nothing. Then she turned toward the grotto and noticed one of the bushes moving. From the interior of the grotto came a golden cloud and, in Bernadette's words, A Lady, young and beautiful, exceedingly beautiful, the like of whom I had not seen before, appeared. Bernadette took her rosary into her hands and prayed with the Lady. When the recitation of the rosary was finished, the Lady returned to the interior of the rock and the golden cloud disappeared with her. From this day when Our Lady favored the French girl until the end of the apparitions, Bernadette be- came the center of controversy, the -target of accusa- tions, and a world-renowned Hgure. One week later the Lady appeared and spoke for the first time. She told Bernadette to come to Massa- bielle for the next two weeks. The following day Berna- dette's aunt, her mother, and many others accompanied her to the grotto. The child had scarcely begun to say the rosary when the Lady appeared. Bernadette's face -became transfigured. By this time, the story of the apparitions had spread throughout the countryside. When Bernadette reached the grotto on Sunday, she found that a large crowd was already gathered. They even climbed the rock of Massabielle itself. Bernadette seemed not to see the crowd as she knelt on the large smooth stone that was always saved for her. She gazed in rapture at the niche which seemed empty to the other people. Sometimes she smiled, and ---- 1-1' sometimes her eyes filled with tears. She and the Lady talked together and prayed together, but the people could hear nothing. Some of the things that the Lady told Bernadette during her visits were for her ears alone and were never repeated. Many people asked Bernadette what the lady looked like. She would reply, The Lady has the appearance of a young girl of sixteen or seventeen. She is dressed in a white robe, girdled at the waist with a blue ribbon which flows down all along her robe. She wears upon her head a veil which is also whiteg this veil gives just a glimpse of her hair and then falls down at the back below her waist. Her feet are bare but covered by the last folds of her robe except at the point where a yellow rose shines upon each of them. She holds on her right arm a rosary of white beads with a chain of gold shining like the two roses on her feet. Four or Eve hundred persons were on hand for the eighth apparition on Wfednesday, February 24. Berna- dette wept bitterly and advanced on her knees to the place where the wild bush was hanging. Then she turned to the people and said, Penitence! Penitence! Penitence ! During the ninth apparition the Lady said to Berna- dette, Go, drink and wash in the spring. After walk- ing to the left corner of the excavations, she resolutely bent down and began to scratch the earth. The little cavity which she hollowed out became full of muddy water. After having waited a moment, all the spectators followed the phases of this strange scene with a painful feeling and a sort of stupor. Those who had believed in the girl were disappointed and bewildered. Most of them went home in silence. The disappointment of Bernadette's followers was not to last for long. Water began trickling from the little cavity which the girl had scooped out. The trickle grew larger and larger. Almost immediately miraculous cures were said to have taken place by applying the water. The enthusiasm of Bernadette's followers became greater than ever. On March 2, the Lady asked Bernadette to tell the priests that she wished a chapel built at Massabielle and that she wished processions to come there. This taxed Bernadette's courage to the utmost. She was afraid of the Abbe Peyramale, who was her pastor and also the Dean of Lourdes. The Abbe had maintained an aloof attitude during the entire proceedings at the grotto and had ordered the priests under his jurisdiction to do likewise. Now he found himself face to face with the girl who was creating all the excitement. He looked at her sternly, as the 'girl in a trembling voice repeated the Lady's request. The Abbe, however, stated that he did not have the money. The people of the region continued to visit the grotto, and they kept candles burning all the time. They bathed in the water of the spring and they began collecting money with which to build a church. The civil officials were angry because they thought the entire world was laughing at them. March 25 was the Feast of the Annunciation. On the eve of that day, Bernadette felt a call to the grotto. She went at dawn. .M-35'f 'f ' ,.,?Vv, rv, ,K ' f 1 ' l:t1f'Vf5?. K H.. Eff. There is, indeed, great natural beauty in the village hidden in the Pyrenees, but there is a great deal more than natural beauty. Nor is it the exclusively religious atmosphere of the shrine and the town, for it does not escape one that there is considerable commercial activity outside the gates proper. Rather it is simply the startling realization that the Virgin Mother of God actually was in this place. And the place has never been the same since then. One could very well ask, How could it be? People who go to Lourdes generally come away with this definite impression, often spoken of as the miracle of Lourdes: that no one goes there without spiritual benefit of some kind. It is true, the sight of the sick at prayer, the processions, the reception of Holy Com- munion-all of this is most impressive and edifying. But alone and beyond this is an awareness of the near- ness of the Lady who graced this place with her presence. The Holy Father, in his encyclical on the Lourdes Pilgrimage, wrote, Nowhere, except perhaps at Lourdes, does one feel so moved to prayer. He goes on to express the hope that the spirit of the pilgrimage this year will mean a growth in the love of God and man, a love clear for all to see at the shrine. He is expressly concerned with the growing emphasis on material things shown by the love of money, the cult of the body, the search for comfort and pleasure, the flight from austerity, the contempt for human life and selhsh indifference to the needs of others. In the mind of the Pope, a pil- grimage should lead to conversion of life. He hopes for just such benehts from the countless pilgrimages to be made this year. This task is accom- plished at Loughlin by two Legion of Mary units: the Immaculate Conception and Mater Christi praesidia. Encouraged by the highest Diocesan authorities, Loughlin Legionaries teach the Faith to public school children. Each Sunday at Brooklyxfs Pre- sentation Parish they join other Legionaries in- structing nearly 200 grade school boys. At Wednes- day released-time classes there and at St. Boniface Parish, Brooklyn, additional instructors are avail- able from the Senior Class. Two Legionaries similarly instruct on Tuesdays and Wfednesdays at the Chapel of Nuestra Seiora de Montserrat, Brooklyn. The Legion of Mary at Loughlin is privileged to have the constant prayerful support of over 100 other Loughlinites and others who are Aux- iliaries. In two years of distinguished service the Lough- lin praesidia have been instrumental in securing 10 Baptisms, 120 First Holy Connnunions and 40 Confirmations. -N., S 'Ni-H S, V , if: A. This organization usually meets twice an Week and contributes most of its time toward preparing posters and paintings for future sport activities, dances and various contests. It has enabled those Loughlin students of an artistic bent to develop and manifest their talents. This year, under the moderatorship of Brother Kevin, as well as that of Brother Martin, the Club has employed the new spray-painting process. It has proved satisfactory and is respon- sible for the large number of colorful posters which so often adorn our school's halls and classrooms. As in the preceding years, the Art Club sur- passes many other schools in artistic work and awards. This is due in part to the efforts of Kevin U'Neill, President of the Club. Schreiner make sure they select the right tools, Student ouneil One of the more prominent features of Loughlin school activities is the Student Council. Comprised of select students, this school organization represents an integral part in the many facets of school life. The outstanding duty of the Council is maintaining discipline among Laughlin- ites. Locker-rooms, stairways and the cafe- teria are kept orderly and quiet hy the councilors. A student whoviolates a school law is inevitably met by one of the familiar faces on these pages, and served with a summons. He is then called before the Student Court, which convenes regularly, and if found guilty, given a reasonable penance. All the boys on the Student Council operate as a working unit under their President Ed. Dwyer, to insure a pleasant and successful school year. The executives of the victorious Gold Party pose for a family por- trait. Man this is easy, but wait for the bounce! As the close of the school year draws near, the faculty and student body of Loughlin look forward to the school's annual hoatride to Rye Beach. As all thoughts of school are left behind, happy Loughlinites board the John A. Meseckn for the three hour ride to the famed playland, to enjoy a day of un- forgettable amusement. The day consisted of rides designed to give the human body a severe case of Shakes, Rattles, and Rolls. Top this off with a pizza., two cokes, a hag of popcorn, five hot dogs, and ten glasses of bicarbonate of soda and you have one Loughlinite happy when the whistle blows signaling the end of another year's hoatride. As the ship draws away from its berth on Long Island Sound, a state of wear- iness prevails, and once more the stu- dents aboard eagerly look forward to another day of school. ll l. , Last glimpse of a familiar face. A religious conclusion to the ceremonies. Graduation On graduation day the goal of all the seniors in the school is reached. It is a day when a group of Loughlinites is sent forth into another world of study and progress. Most of the group will continue on to college while others will enter into the business world, The graduation will take place in the auditorium. On this momentous occasion the graduates will receive their coveted diplomas and a few of the outstanding graduates will receive awards. These awards will be presented bv Monsignor Hald who also will present the diplomas. Entertainment will be provided by some of the more talented members of the school, and all these happenings will serve to make the day a most memorable one. Beginning of a long awaited afternoon. The Dance, primarily held for the benefit of the graduating class, was also attended by members of the underclasses. The fact that over two hundred couples attended it, attests to the ever increasing popularity of this youngest of our varied social events. The music was supplied by the Ideals who played everything from a fox trot to the latest novelty dance., the '4Stroll. At 11:30 the dance came to an end and happy couples departed with the memory of a wonderful evening. Reid, Under the able leadership of the team captain Jolm Geraghty, a small but determined group of harriers started the rigorous training for the 1957 Cross-Country season, In early September Mr. Miles stated the facts: With only one Varsity member, Jim Paolino, hack from last year the outlook does not appear brightf, Right from the beginning, it was oh- vious that this was going to be a season of building, rather than one of accomplishments. To make the outlook for the year even darker., Jim Paolino was lost for the season because of a broken ankle. Then the flu epidemic interfered with practice and Seniors Dick Gallagher and Mike Maddoek were stricken and out for the season, However, the team showed its determination by placing sixth in the Grout Memorial Run and continued at a fairly even pace up until the time of the championships. Then the season ended on a happy note as the Varsity team of John Geraghty, John Singer, John Hack, Mark Thomas, and Maurice Reid found themselves ranked eighth, in the CHSAA Championships. In the Brooklyn-Long Island Meet the Jay Vee placed third as L. Morin, J. Strecansky, L. Spiegel, W. Koch, and W1 Hannon scored. In November Jolm Geraghty reached his peak, winning the Christian Brothers Cham- pionship with a time of 13:37. With all but three men returning next year the team will be a serious contender for all championships and John Geraghty has a good chance of becoming the top runner in the East. ross Countr John Geraghty, Christian Brothers Cross Country Champion. Their chances were hindered by the organiza- tion of a new team for this year. At the Christian Brothers' Tournament., Loughlin took the third slot coming in behind Manhattan Prep and LaSalle Academy. An in- novation this year was the introduction of sock hops after nome games. The ,I.V. has shown much improvement and is expected to render a great help to the varsity next year, The team was hindered by lack of experience but by next year they should he cap- able of handling themselves quite well on the court. Bo Img A comparatively recent activity at Loughlin, which has grown with tremendous strides, is the howling team. It consists of the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Intramural teams. The Var- sity and Junior Varsity have achieved unusual success in their leagues under the auspices of the Catholic High School Athletic Association. The development of the howling team may be credited to Brother C. Richard, F.S.C. Through intramural programs for the freshmen, sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors, and under the super- vision of Brother C. Jerome, F.S.C., the team is amply provided with talent. Under its captain, ,I . Cusick, the Varsity Squad placed fourth in the C.H.S.A.A. The Junior Varsity, headed by J. Daniels and R. Walter, won the Brooklyn-Queens Cham- pionship of the C.H.S.A.A. Tennis After having been stymied in league competition last year due to the lack of a strong second doubles team, our present squad appears to he a strong contender for the C.H.S.A.A. crown. The team is paced by captain Terry McMahon, the present C.H.S.A.A. cham- pion and sixth ranking junior player in the East. The name McMahon is not a new one around Loughlin. For two seasons Terry and his brother Jim led Loughlin to many victories. Terry is ably assisted by Dave Carey, Bob Piereth, Marc Grottano and Brian Duffy. These stalwarts are supplemented by a host of younger members who hold the key to Loughlin's future success. Such stars as Andy Dalski, Kevin McKay and Charlie Murphy plus a large freshman team of seventy members are expected to bring much glory to Loughlin shortly. The spirit and determination displayed hy the entire team is very pleasing to our new moderator, Brother Victor. This drive has resulted in many favorable surprises and is expected to push the Racqueteers on their way to another C.H.S.A.A. cham- pionship. Varsity. Kneeling: H. Brett, P. Giacolone, K, McKay, J. Witli gradu- ation the team lost a majority of players. Even with this fact, a number of last year's players will be returning to action. Mr. Tedesco will have back this year Ed Dwyer, the powerhouse of the Lough- lin battery, J oe Daniels, an all-around hall player, and Sam Muscarnera who will again display his hitting power. Also with the squad will be J. Liguori, a fast-rising hall player with stamina and know-howg A Balash, a utility man with emphasis on first baseg G. Bryant, a center-field dyna- mo. With A.
