Foreword Dear Crusaders of 1954 High school years are an extremely important prrt of our American educational sys tem a p1rt th1t arms at gryrng students a knowlelge ot the 1rts 1nd sciences and gryrng also practical experience rn the art of lrxrng And tor .1 Crtholrc school that means experience rn the art of Christian lryrng Nrturally such rn rclea of education demands that rt be a day by day experience rt cannot be something that rs crammed into a few drys before LY1IT'lll'l1l10IlS rt cannot be ID 1ttrtr1de th 1t rs put on in time for Religion class and discarded when the drsmrssrl bell rings Each day brings with rt new problems new circumstances new opportunities to put into practrc1l use the knowledge gained rn the classroom It rs true that much of the school day rs taken up with studying trcts and learning from textbooks But there rs a more important side still the forming ot character Character training rs something that rs neglected by the modern philosophy of freedom to do as one pleases Freedom rn thrs sense rs not treedom It 1ll but license Char acter trarnrng the discipline ot the wrll rn Cl1I'lSfl1l'1 principles must go hand in hand with excellence rn studies or thrs excellence wrll be hollow and wrll not last The facts and figures of the textbooks wrll be long forgotten when the trrrnrng ot drserplrne stands to guide the student through the drttrcultres ot life other rsms of modern philosophy Taking into account the dignity of man the Com mandments the counsels of Christ and the immortality ot the soul rt arms at gryrng its students the proper perspectrye the proper outlook the proper rttrtudc towards the society rn which they must lrye and make 1 lrxrne It rs not possible to rpproach thrs task rn .1 negatrxc way to deny the credentials ot trlse philosophies There can be no xord no yacuum no emptiness into which the student crn rctre1t Instead there rs the force of Chrrsts teaching which has been proxcd and touncl thc best guide possible to good Christian lryrng XY'hen the Senior rs gradtrated he r eeryes tl diploma and his report card indicates that he has earned .1 passing grade that hrs high school training rs completed It unfortunate that there rs not also some way to indicate how well the principles ot Christian lryrng haye penetrated hrs character It rs only the test of time tha w ll reyeal whether our Crusader from Bishop Kenny High School wrll be able to lrye up to the ideals rneulcated by hrs teachers during these school years It rs only the actual experience of lryrng that can test whether the graduated Crusader will bring credit to hrmselt and hrs school or not And thrs test ot lite rs not going to end with a grade on a report card thrs rs the test that ends rn eternity Zia? was I ATHI R VUIIINHEIMLR - r .
