Education is life: directed evolution Education is a lot like evolution. Each re uires a step by step building, rejecting the outdated, holding on to the time tested, trying out the new. Each is aimed at the fulfillment of the individual and directed toward the good of the society. The validity of each has been proven, but neither can be accepted without a certain amount of faith. And both evolution and education require a con- trolling factor, a calculated judgement of just what will be and what will not. In evolution We call this last characteristic natural selection. In education we call it the administration. Administrations these days are in an awkward position. If they decide to stay with too many of the old ways, they run the risk of being labeled archaic and irrelevant. And if they sweep in an abundance of newer, more liberal ideas, they are sure to be called radical, even anarchistic. Fortu- nately for us, the administration of Bishop Ireton fits in to neither of these categories. For the ad- ministration here likes to believe that its job is not to 'tstamp out pre-molded members of a society, nor to advocate complete withdrawal from it. Perhaps they tend to fol ow the line of think- ing whic holds that the job of any educational institution is to develop individuals who will build societies. And here we see that education is not only similar to evolution, it is part of it. Rev. Thomas Palko, osfs, Disciplinarian Rev. Joseph McKay, osfs, Principal
