C- 30141111 We had a very fine retreat December 3, 4, 5. For the first time there were two retreat masters, one for the boys, and one for the girls. Father Orville Munie of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate of Carthage, Missouri, gave the retreat for the boys, and Father Leonard C. Boehm, of the Assumption Parish, for the girls. It was plain to see that the students were doing all in their power to make the retreat a success. Even the freshmen who have a hard time lining up with the three days of silence did very well. Throwing a spotlight on Father Muncieas instructions, we found the main theme to be: This is your opportunity to start life anew. lt is the abuse of things created . g. , by God that is sinful, not their usef, By abuse, Father meant using things for a purpose for which God did not intend them. With the frequent advice, Zip your lip, and talk with Cod, Father Boehm wove his talks around the subject of a recent encvclieal of Pope Pius XII. Tua Res . 9, . . Agitur tYour destiny is at stakel. These words Father Boehm used to show the girls that upon good women depends the saving of our world. 8 ur piritua L cl 1' i l J llwsl Rl l?l'l'l'lHf !'jllll'IilI li illl i. frflllfll uflitiilfll all rizilicmiisfi 'lin hi-ml llu-sv uhm-ils ul Chi'iSl has ill9PH lhe lilework of our hfrlnwil llisliup, Most lif'Xl'I'1'llll l iflXNlll Y. fyl'lt1l'2l. Annually, the school follows the admontion ofthe Church to pray for the dead uthat they may be loosed from their sinsfv and a lVlass fs t FTCZIILT Sercl 36 is offered by the students for the repose of the souls of their relatives and friends and par- ticularly the deceased students. ln the six years of Hogan's existence, two students have been called home to Cod. Shirley Mae Owens, who would have graduated with the class of 1944, died after a short illness in August, 1943. At a CYC swimming party, held just before school opened in September, 1945, Frank Sercl, a junior, drowned. Both of these students are remembered in our daily prayers and in the annual Mass. The various clubs attend Masses said at their request in the small oratory. Before games the ball clubs usually assist at Mass and receive Holy Communion, making one of their princi- pal intentions a request that no one be seriously injured. ,, .. . if A 'SPI u:1N:,:h v .z ,n,. - , N + . ,,,,e'sQ'2' J. .'1,..,. We have two publications: The Hogan Citizen, our school paper, started four years ago, and The Prism, our yearbook, which in the first two years of its existence, was known as The Pioneer. The history of the paper and yearbook has been typical of the progressive spirit of the school. Founded only six years ago, the school has had a paper for four years and a yearbook for three. The first Yearbook consisted of thirty-six pages and had a paper binding. Launch- ing ahead the next year, a ninety-six , page book was published, which brought Second Place Honor Rating from the National Scholastic Press As- sociation. Encouraged by the rise of The Hogan Citizen to First Place Honor Rating for the first semester of the 1945-46 term, Ruth Leitner and John Leitner, coeditors of The Prism, under , 373142, iii fiigi ii:-155 5 , ' ' T T 25225 1 -,-- - , the sponsorship of Sister Mary James, have striven to follow the constructive 2- criticism of the press associations of which the school is a member, and to .- produce 3 worth-while yearbook. Because of the opportunity which student organizations offer for development of leadership and the further pursuance of work done in the classroom, teachers sponsor and encourage these activities. Individual projects, field trips, lectures, tours of places or industries, allied to student club interests, form some of the interesting features of club work. Leading all organizations is the .Sodality-Union, which consists of boys en- rolled in the Holy Name Society, and of the girls' Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The monthly Marian poetry contest, honoring Mary, pamphlets left in public places to disseminate Catholic doctrine, hours spent in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, collections of money and clothes for the poor of Europe, Christmas for the poor of Kansas City-these are some of the forms which this spiritual society has taken to express itself. Sister Francis Borgia is the faculty advisor of the Sodality-Union. The Mothers ,N mam prop. a support. an orsramzation that can ln- relied upon to answer the' Y. - . ' w fall ol any nievrl at Hogan is the lVlothcrs Lluh. Meeting once in Ll month. these lvusy mothers plan and work in order that pro- jects such as the lnlying of a heautiful rust colored velour curtain. a 1-yvlorama and horder lights. a lovely gold cihorium and liistey organ, a light oal-1 liturgical altar. or a sixteen milimetcr projector may he realized. That list of projects is really monumental to a group of women who have household cares lmcsidcs to oc- cupy their time. Below is a picture ol' the mothers who met at the Nowmlmer meeting. Tlllthl- tionally. they give the Sisters a shower at Thanksgiving. Pictured on the other page is thi- well-fillf-cl table with a meaningful cornucopia dcvorting the middle of thc talrlc. Utln-r incidental hut laborious undertakings are thc cooking and scrving ol' the father and son banquet, and the athletes' dinner. Une of the prettiest events of their busy year is the lVlother-Daughter Tea in the spring. Then feminine beauty and grace at Hogan is the prominent feature. Daughters who delight in jeans and sandals put on their high heels and nylons to introduce their girl classmates to their mothers. There are always dainty sand- wiches and cakes, hut the most fun comes from just the chance to introduce friends to mothers. 92 P ll M 1 aifwee. vlw- Jl'4'Slllt'lllZ Mrs. l . . F, I R.
