Guthmiller s a After numerous late summer practices the one hundred ten members of the band really fell into step and lined up many snappy performances for the school year, begin- ning with the annual half-time show with the East High band at our first home football game. Later in the season spectators witnessed a show by the combined bands of Heelan and Central High. The late fall months found our band making varied public appearances: leading our own homecoming parade, the Armed Forces Day parade, the dedication of Kuemper High School in Carroll, and Moose State Convention Parade. The trophy won for out- standing performance in this parade is proof of the determination and spirit of our band. A very important event was the trip to Dubuque in early November for the game with Loras Academy. The people of Dubuque were favorably impressed by the splendid per- formance of the band. Expenses of this trip were defrayed by concert ticket donations and some of the proceeds from the bands chocolate bar sale. The sixty-piece concert band presented .1 Painless Concert in December. At this concert the baton and flag twirlers also displayed their talents. In early spring the band again began early morning street marching in preparation for performance at the Sioux City Relays. Highlighting the year of course was the Spring Concert in May, the finishing touch to .1 very active year under the direction of Mr. Harold Lorenz. 4 '5 'N . - -Xu XXI 3 -'P W 'affg-,' N'-xX,5g'. x'XH'g.r9'5 I , uxxp. The Fleming-men returned to Public Schools Stadium the following Friday to do battle with another cross-city rival, Central High, emerging from this one on the long end of a 32-7 score. The Crusaders were idle the following weekend, but traveled to Des Moines on October 21 where they swamped Dowling High 26-O. Returning to Memorial Field for the last home game of the 1955 season, the Blue and Gold rolled over the Iowa School for the Deaf with a 55-0 trouncing. On November 5 the Heelanites traveled across the state to Dubuque, where they met the ever powerful Loras Academy. Brushing the Gubs aside 19-6, the Crusaders retained the coveted goal-post trophy to close the 1955 football season with a record of seven wins, one loss and no ties. In his first year at Heelan Coach Don Fleming produced a City Championship team. The Crusaders easily downed both city rivals, East and Central. In addition, the Heelan High Crusaders were the Siouxland Champions, taking first place in the final ratings. HEELAN 26-GREGORY 6 . . . Heelan's opening game against Gregory, South Dakota, marked the inauguration of Don Fleming as football coach here at Heelan. After a slow start Heelan rolled to pay dirt four times in the second period. The Heelanites' iron de- fense held the Gorillas scoreless until the final seconds of the game. The Crusaders outplayed the South Dakotans by rolling up 230 yards from scrimmage and making 10 first downs. Outstanding play was noted on the parts of Pat Doyle, Mark McGowan, Ed Vandermark, and Bob Murray. Boom' Minas DAN Jovxr NEAL Kafmpiza Tackle Center Tackle BILI. In the opening game of the City League competition, East proved no match for the Fleming-men, as the spirited Crusaders turned the Raiders back by a score of 19-7. Heelan was well on the road to its second victory of the season early in the second quarter. Sparked by thc accurate passing arm of Mark McGowan, the Crusad ers went 6-1 yards in 6 plays, finally scoring on .1 McGowan pass. Four plays after the kickoff Heelan recovered a Raider fumble and the Blue and Gold was on the tnarch again. After picking up a first and ten, Doyle rambled 41 yards to pay dirt. Mc- Gowan converted to make the score at halftime 13-0. Late in the third period Rickord punched across from the 5 to score I-Ieelan's final points of the game. In the final period East scored its only T.D. and converted for its seven points. SIOUX FALLS CATHEDRAL 19-I-IEELAN 15 . . . Heelan suffered its only loss of the season at the hands of the Fighting Irish of Sioux Falls Cathedral. The Crusaders weakened by the loss of Bill Rickord, Pat Doyle, Bob Flaa, and jack Hart- nett failed to penetrate the Irish defense and trailed at halftime by a score of 15-0. However, the Blue and Gold came to life in the second half of play when three plays after receiving the kickoff, Mark McGowan hit Sophomore fullback Bill Birmingham for 40 yards and a touchdown. Once again in the final period McGowan completed another 40-yard touchdown pass, this time to Mike Nye, but as the clock ran out, Don Flemings charges were on the short end of a 19-15 score. HEELAN SSYIOXVA SCHOOL FOR DEAF 0 . . . The Crusaders had little trouble with the Iowa School for the Deaf, as they walked away with 35-0 decision. The I-Ieelan players, gifted by their greater size and superior speed, controlled the play through the game via the airways as well as on the ground. Taking the ball on their own 48, the Crusaders pushed to the 18 of the Mutes when Mark McGowan passed to Mike Nye for the first score of the game. In the second quarter guard Bob Murray intercepted a Deaf pass and went over the double stripe for an- other Heelan score. The fired-up I-Ieelanites, namely Nye, Murray, Bertsch, Doyle, and Birmingham, scored touchdowns while McGowand and Tom Gentleman added the extra points to rack up a score of 35 to 0 as the final gun sounded. The Knights were no match for Coach Fleming's Charges as they met little opposition in scoring eight T.D.'s. The second half of play was dominated by reserves from the Heelan bench. Kuemper found no more success with the Heelan reserves than with the first string. Outstanding play was noted on the part of the entire team with special honors going to Sophomore fullback Bill Birmingham. HEELAN 26-DOWLING 0 . . . Heelan rolled over Des Moines Dowling with a decisive 26-0 battering. For the Crusaders it was the third win in five games with the Des Moines clubg for Dowling it was a loosing, battle from the opening kickoff. Early in the first period Doyle slipped into the end zone on one of his two scoring jaunts. In the second quarter quarterback Mark McGowan picked up a Dowling fumble and increased the margin of victory on a 28-yard scoring trip. A McGowan-to-Nye touchdown pass early in the third quarter finished the scoring. Dowling's only threat came in the last minutes of play as it pushed to the two-yard line only to see the clock run out. HEELAN 19-LORAS 6 . . . On November 6 the Crusaders journeyed across the state to do battle with the Gubs of Loras Academy. Playing on a cold and windswept field failed to cool the red-hot Heelanites. The Gubs of Loras found themselves outplayed throughout the entire game. Only once in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter did the Gubs break the back of the Heelan defense and score. As the final gun sounded, the score stood Heelen 19 Loras 6. For the third time in as many games The Crusaders stymied the Gubs of Loras to retain the goal post trophy. I-IEELAN 32-CENTRAL 7 . . . The Crusaders met the Maroon and White of Central on October 7 in what was to be the deciding game for the City League Football Championship. Sparked by fullback Pat Doyle, the Crusaders brushed off Central by a score of 32-7. Returning to the Heelan lineup after a Z-game absence, Doyle received the ball for the first time in the game when Central was forced to punt, and went 77 yards for the first Heelan score. Four minutes later behind excellent blocking Heelan again hit pay dirt. During the game Doyle streaked into the end zone for three T.D.'s, while Mike Nye rambled across for two. The Heelan line led by All-State guard Bob Murray held the Little Maroons to scant yardage. The last half of play dominated by Heelan reserves allowed only one Central T.D. in the third quarter.
