This was their second television first, having been the first to be televised in a Sioux City parade the year be- fore at Lila Clouds welcoming. Other appearances of various nature were part of the band's activity. Highlight of the year, of course, was the Spring concert. Since our band is always anxious to be different, the con- cert was filled with surprises. The girls, dressed in pastel formals, as contrasted with the boys in concert uniform, brcught countless compliments from those who attended. The night was a big one for Bob Lee, a sophomore band member, who had his original march for band played at the concert. Graduation found twenty-one members of the band leav- ing school. This is the largest number the band has lost through graduation. Those graduating this year were the first to complete four years in the concert uniformed band. PERSONNEL Hartz, C. George, P. Bolstered by ten returning lettermen, the coaching staff and players alike looked forward to a demanding eight game schedule. After dropping games to the undefeated East and Carroll elevens, the Crusaders went without further defeat to chalk up a 5-2-l record, for the most successful season since 1949. The high note was the second defeat of Dubuque Loras in as many years, which enabled Heelan to keep posses- sion ofthe traveling trophy. Although guard Bob Murray was the only Heelanite who was selected on the All-City First Team, the Crusaders dominated the Second Team with Jerry McGowan, Jack Rickert, Bob Flaa, Mel Rice, and Bill Rickord all receiving berths. In addition, Pat Doyle and Mark McGowan were given honorable mention. The team voted Jerry McGowan the most valuable player, and Jack Rickert, honorary captain. The 1954-l955 Heelan basketball team turned in the most fruitful campaign since the Blue and Gold first took the court six seasons ago. While playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, the Crusaders earned themselves a record of ten wins in twenty-two starts, and walked off with the City and District Cham- pionships. Senior forward Bill Bogaard and iunior center Denny O'Brien combined for 473 of l-leeIan's total l,O36 points, and both were named to the All-City First Team. RON SANDBOM BILL BOGAARD JACK RICKERT MEL RICE The initial encounter of the '54-'55 cage season, played at LeMars Gehlen, sa f.f Heelan come out on the short end of a 56-41 score. Despite a three point lead at the midway mark, the Crusaders could not contain the Diocesan Champs, as they piled up All points in the second half. Bill Bogaard was high scorer, tallying l5, followed by Denny O'Brien with ten. Making their first home appearance, the Crusaders lost a hard-fought game to the Tanagers of Vermillion, 58-52. Coacn Zahren's charges held the lead until the third quarter, when a sudden cold spell produced only eight points. Center Denny O'Brien rang up 27 tallies, more than half of l-leelan's total. ln almost identical games with East and Leeds, the Crusaders played efficient ball in the early stages, but saw a ten-point half-time lead in each contest slip through their fingers. O'Brien bucketed 20 against the Lancers, and lO in the Black Raider Tilt, Mel Rice dropped in nine in the East contest, and Bill Bogaard duplicated during the Leeds scrap. On the following night, Heelan outclassed the Cardinals from South Sioux by a A4-37 count. The Zahrenmen were never headed as they jumped to a four point lead in the first quarter and maintained it all the way. Tom Sheeren and Mark McGowan shared scoring honors with 12 apiece, The Varsity coasted to a 47-39 victory in the annual Alumni action held during the Christmas holidays. Mel Rice popped in five field goals to lead the Crusaders. An easier game was the rout of Central a few days later. The Heelanites, playing without center O'Brien, waltzed past the Little Maroons, ol-37. Bill Bogaard led the pack with l6. Heelan turned back the fourth quarter challenge of Sioux Falls Cathedral to emerge victorious, 47 to 38. Down by twelve points at the intermission, the South Dakotans fought back to within three betore the Crusaders put on a spurt ot their own to pull away in the final minutes. Dependable Bill Bogaard registered T6 to lead all scorers. Superior height proved a definite advantage as the Crusa- ders polished off Iowa Deaf to the tune ot 62-116. Jack Rickert's l7 points and his all-around play led the team to their fifth consecutive victory. On Friday, January ld, Heelan traveled to Orange City to take on Sioux Center, ranked number one in Siouxland. During the 32 thrill-packed minutes that fol- lowed, the Warriors were able to squeeze cut a ol-59 win in a game that was nip and tuck right down to the wire. Bill Bogaard paced the Crusaders, chalking up l9 counters. Jack Rickert was close behind with lo. Returning home for a Saturday appearance, Heelan's Crusaders ran up against the top team in the Omaha area, Holy Name. Heelan got oft to a slow start, and the Ramblers' early scoring provided a thick cushion as they went home with a 49-33 decision. Denny O'Brien returned to action, dumping in T2 to lead the Crusader cause. l-leelan turned in one ot' their best games of the year with a 68 to 60 thumping of highly-touted Carroll. The contest was played on an equal basis until the Hee- lanites began to pull away during the final two and one-halt minutes. Scoring honors went to Jack Rickert, who piled up twenty. O'Brien and Bogaard contri- buted l3 and TO respectively. Three days later, the Crusader gym was invaded by the Immaculate Concep- tion team from Cedar Rapids. The Greyhounds capitalized on tree throws in the closing minutes to grab a 59-53 verdict. Bill Bcgaard was again tops in the scoring column with l8. The second game .with Central proved to be far more exciting. From the open- ing tip-off the teams matched each other basket for basket, the score was tied eleven tlmes. With the count knotted at 52Yall and a little over a minute remain- ing, the Crusaders elected to pass the ball around until there nas only enough time for one shot. At tne end of the contest the scoreboard showed the Knign's stfll holding that ten point lead, 50-AO. ln the Loras game, it ,vas l-leelan who held tne edge at half-time, but the Gubs hit over fifty percent during the last half to chalk up a 67-541 triumph. O'Brien threvv in l7 against St. Ambrose and l11 in the Loras game. Jack Rickert also counted fourteen against the Gubs. Widespread interest was placed on the l-leelan-Sioux Center rematch after the previous epic struggle at Orange City, lt was a real battle for three quarters, but Sioux Center caught fire and could do nothing vvrong as they ran avvay from the Crusaders, 76-116. l-leelan set the stage for the title battle with East by brushing past South Sioux, 56-53, in an overtime. The entire game fvas a see-savv, shoot and run affair played before a capacity crovvd in the Nebraskans' gym. When regulation time ran out, the scoreboard read 119-119, but the Crusaders outscored the Cardinals in the extra session, 7-41. Denny O'Brien banged in 30 points, high for the season in Sioux City, The fo'- lowing night, in a return match with Cathedral of Sioux Falls, the l-leelanites saw shot after shot bounce off the rim as the Irish snatched a 52-115 decision. Mel Rice added a pair of field goals to his ten free throws to lead in the scoring departf ment, Denny O'Brien chipped in with 13. Heelan's Crusaders gained sweet revenge for an early season setback as they completely dominated play to annex the City Championship by crushing East, 38 to 26. The game was a low-scoring affair, with Heelan's impenetrable zone defense proving too much for the Black Raiders. The visitors were forced to shoot from far out, and even then the Crusaders pressed so closely that East had to hurry their attempts, resulting in many wild shots. Bill Bogaard was the pace-setter with I4 tallies, Mel Rice and Ron Sandbom particularly harrassed the Raiders with their exceptional defensive work out in front. Victory number ten came at the hands of Fort Dodge in a game played at Holstein. Heelan mowed down the Dodgers, 53-47, to capture the District crown. The Zahrenmen zipped to a six-point lead in the first frame and held it all the way as the teams traded point for point during the last three quarters. O'Brien and Rickert both hit the double figuresfDenny piled up lo, while Jack contributed 12. Free throws proved to be the deciding factor as Sioux Center bumped the Crusaders, 66 to 47, in the Sub-State Tournament. The Warriors from Sioux county produced only one more field goal than Heelan, but cashed in on thirty charity tosses in 36 attempts.
