The construction of I-Ieelan Catholic High School models a parallel in that the project was placed under the protection of Our Lady of Fatima. Under Our Lady's patronage no serious. accidents occurred, despite the great task involved. In fulfillment of a promise made to her by our principal, Monsignor Kevane, We dedicate this first volume of the yearbook to Our Lady of Fatima. L iii ,. uit Pain Us THIS FIRST ISSUE of the Shield is dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima, as an expression of our gratitude for her aid in the construction of our SCHOOL. Working with Our Lady, the ADMINISTRATION molds the Whole YOUTH, not only as future leaders, but also as citizens of heaven. In addition to the formal curriculum, can be found the various ACTIVITIES, which together with the SPORTS com- pose the entire YEAR. Stuff 4. Editor-in-Chief ....... Richard Stroup Copy Editor .... Immediately after, the men went out into the homes of the Catholics of Sioux City to obtain signatures as pledges that the dream school would come true. THAT WAS TODAY!! The TOMORROW is now being realized. We of Heelan High wish to express our gratitude to these generous men and also to the equally generous persons who in any way made possible the advantages which we now enjoy. Z -. Mueller, Bishop of Sioux City, marked the beginning of a new era in Catholic education in the Sioux City diocese. AT THIS TIME it was difficult for the Catholics of Sioux City to see and realize the value and importance of this project. They knew, however, that this new source of education was sorely needed. During this, the first year ot its operation, it has proved itself capable of maintaining the highest standards in both scholastics and athletics. This hour, a kind of laboratory period for the religion classes, may be said to replace the regular book work in such way so as to integrate the secular phase of our education with that of the spiritual. The clergy of the faculty altemate offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and in hearing confessions. Each week a pastor of one of the city parishes addresses the student congregation upon one of a series of selective ser- mbns. YI? . The School Band Probably the most school-minded group in school, band members have given up all of their study periods to practice, This group appeared at the basketball games and at pep rallies, to add zest and spirit to the student body. Though small in num- ber, their enthusiasm and pep added much to school life this past year. Their 'red letter day' was May 19, when they appeared with the chorus to present a very worthwhile and highly entertaining program for the public. The Shutter Bugs One of the outstanding clubs at Heelan High is the Shutterbuqs. Most of the pictures used in our 1950 an- nual were supplied by its members. The main purpose of this organization is to leam photography and its var- ious ramifications. Under the direction of Father Behrens, an expert in this field, and assisted by President Mclielveyg Vice President Linden: Treasurer Hartz, and Secretary Cody, the Thursday night meetings have been most interesting and informative. As a basis for future student councils, the student committee has shown excellent progress and spirit in their brief period of formation. It is their pur- pose to act as a bridge between the students and faculty and to aid in the good government of Heelan Catholic High. Iim Murray was chairman of the ader Club The purpose of this organization is to aid in financing Heelan l-ligh's athletic program. Results this first year have indeed been gratifying. The officers, under the directorship of Wm. Sievers, the administration and the students wish to extend a big thank you to Crusader followers for their splendid cooperation and enthu- siasm. Through efforts prior to opening of the football season, 1205 membership tickets were sold for Heelan High athletic events. ljlte Cru According to the adopted constitution, the board of directors is f made up in this wise: each one of the city parishes has delegates: two from the five larger, and one from smaller parishes. At the beginning of each new school year, one delegate from each parish automatically is dropped from the board and another is appointed to replace him by the parish pastor. In the case of smaller parishes, a new representative is named each year. The board of directors for the year l949-50 consisted of the fol- lowing gentlemen: Wm. Sievers, Claude Ziegler, Fred Sandman, Martin Pauley, Glen Beaubien, Cy McGowan, Harry Watson, Iames R. Flanagan, Arthur W. Smith, Earl Speckhart, Arthur Troy, L. I. Brooks, Ray Buckrey, Don Ioynt. Charles Diehl and John Crowe. Crusader members honored lettermen of Heelan High's football squad at a dinner following the close of the season, in Cathedral Hall. On this occasion Bishop Mueller presented team members with monograms. Basketball lettermen were awarded letters at a din- ner ln their honor Easter Monday in the high school cafeteria. The latter was also sponsored by the Crusader Club. Pictured are the officers elected for the school year 1949-50. Left to right: Cy McGowan, Immaculate Conception, treasurer, William Sievers, Blessed Sa- crament, president: Don Ioynt, St. Michael's, vice president: Charles Diehl, Cathedral, secretary. Our Pride and Jo The Library Club was formed in the early fall for the purpose of helping Sister Mary Peter Claver, O. P., organize our Heelan High library. Under the leadership of their officers, Iullle Kramper, Frances Mahr, Patricia Kramper, and Jean Goldsborough, thirty-three juniors and freshmen have drawn up four committees --- Publicity, Display, Service, and Room. Rotating jobs every two months presents the students with the opportunity of learning the various techniques of library science. They are gaining experience in processing books - shellacking, pasting in pockets, accessioning and lettering. Besides being of great service to the school, these students are acquiring a valuable foundation in preparation for a future career as librarians. Leu Bjes Q.? Uppermost tn our mind. as we set about the task of publishing an annual. was the fact that through the generosity of the Catholics of Sioux City a million dollar, ultra-modem school was erected for the youth ln and around Sioux Ctty. Brick, mortar and steel was made possible through united ef- fort by the Catholics of the city, and so, we have tried to keep to the theme, as you will note, in our dlvtston pages. As all things new must be tried, so too have the faculty tried the students, and the students the faculty tn our first year of existence. There were many trying, difficult days. There were decisions to be made where there were no precedents to follow. There were deeds of commlsston and omission. How- ever, due to noble effort on the part of students and faculty 'On a Wing and a Prayer', we have pass- ed the difficult cr'tsts with colors flying. We, the staff are grateful to have had the opportunity of presenting ltfe at Catholic High fnow Heelan Htghl during this first year of its existence. Should this publication be late in reaching your hands--please excuse. We had to revise the paste-ups on the first 48 pages due to the change in name from Catholic to Heelan High. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to all those who have helped tn the publication of The Shield of 1950. Our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hollister: to Lithocraft Incorporated: the Bolstein Com- pany: the Rocky Plate Company, and the S. K. Smtth Company. Special mention should be given Larry Flood, who spent hours at the drawing board: to Ilm McKe1vey. our chief Shutterbug: to Tiny Stroup and Father Behrens who directed this work. May that which ts good and noble at l-Ieelan High be kept in tact and be carried on through the years-that which is not perfect, may it be improved and perfected. P.S.
