The season took off with o slow start with consecutive losses to Cushing and Eustace. ln a battle of defensive wits the Crusaders went down to the Bearkats from Cushing by a score of 12-6. The following week the Crusaders fell to Eustace 3-O despite a rushing total of over 200 yards, 163 of those yards from junior Heath Webb. Things turned around for the Crusaders the following week in Bullard with a 26-13 victory over the Panthers highlighted by senior quarterback Terry Maloney's 161 yards passing. 360 yards of total offense proved to be the nail in the coffin of Scurry-Rosser the following week at home as the Crusaders strolled past the Wildcats 85-0. The following week the Crusaders battled with a very strong Princeton team and fell 24-14. The next game was the homecoming match agalnst Cistercian Preparatory. The Crusaders were not able to rebound from the Princeton loss and fell by a score of 20-13. The Crusaders defeated the second-year Alba-Golden team the following week by a score of 27-O. When the team regrouped to play Dallas First Baptist the following week all the players put In a tremendous effort in an attempt to avenge the lass of 1962. ln perhaps the best effort all year, the Crusaders lost to an improved First Baptist team by only one touchdown 14-7. District ploy rolled around the following week. ln an intense effort by all the Gorman players the Crusaders walloped the rival Sacred Heart Tigers from Muenster by a score of 28-6. The following week was unscheduled and thus gave the team extra time to practice for the upcoming district match against Notre Dame of Wichita Falls, And in Wichita Falls the following week the Crusaders mercilessly demolished the Knights 35-O. The dream became reality. The district champlonshlp belonged to Gormanl The bi-district match then rolled around. lt pltted the Crusaders against Galveston O'Connell. Despite a strong effort by the Crusaders, O'Connell blanked Gorman 13-O. Thus the Crusaders ended the year with a deceptive 5 and 5 record. The season was dubbed as being successful by head coach Eric Pottkotter who added, the fact that we got into the playoffs and played well kind of helped the spirit. lt gives us alittle motivation for next year. ln that sense It was a successful year.
