It must have been sllghtly easler to turn left on to the Loop back thenl The hlstory of the Tyler Cathollc School System durlng modern tlmes really began with the establishment of St. Gregory Elementary School In 1946 By 1954 a deflnlte need for hlgh school facllltles was reallzed In January 1957 Blshop Thomas K Gorman of Dallas lnltlated a fund ralslng campalgn for a hlgh school Ground was broken for the new school on December 8 1957 and In September 1956 Tyler Cathollc Hlgh School opened lts doors for classes The school was orlglnally one maln academlc bulldlng but wlthln a few years the football stadlum and gymnasium were added In August of 1970 the hlgh school was rededlcated ln honor of Blshop Thomas K Gorman retlred blshop of the Dlocese of Dallas Improvements durlng the late 70 s Included the addl tlon of a track faclllty and tennls courts In March 1980 the Catholic communlty In Tyler embarked on a most ambltlous campalgn to sollclt funds for the constructlon of a middle school academlc faclllty a multl purpose communlty center a fleld house and renovatlon of the exlstlng gymnasium Contrlbutlons were recelved from parlshloners as well as the wlder Tyler com munlty Ground breaking ceremonles were held on Aprll 80 1961 and constructlon was completed In the Fall of 1982 The past 25 years at T K Gorman have brought many changes As Mr Brewerton descrlbed In an artlcle In the school newspaper we have gone from no graduatlng classes In 1959 and 1960 to graduatlng classes wlth as many as 54 students from athletlcs In an open fleld wlth borrowed or dlscarded unlforms to the real gyms and flelds and unlforms and state tournaments and playoffs wlth a prlde and splrlt that ls stlll growlng the many organlzatlons that were begun then In form from not much recognltlon to hlgh recognltlon In the Tyler communlty and the people vlslonary pastors prln clpals parlshloners non parlshloners dedicated teachers eager and not so-eager learners appreclatlve students students who would be appreclatlve later school mothers speclal faculty members dedlcated parents hard worklng speclal people of every generatlon of students belng replaced by the same In the next generatlon Thls Is T K Gorman always strlvlng to Ilve out our motto Seek Vlsdom through Truth and Charlty And flnally one Important aspect of T K Gorman that makes It what It ls and that has so much meanlng to Its students and ex students Its tradltlons TKG has many tradltlons that are carrled out each year and have been golng on for many years ln our openlng sectlon of thls yearbook we want to show some of the tradltlons of T K Gorman and what they mean to us some cases, decllned, then resurfaced ln stronger and better ' I I

DGdiCOI'iOf7 - Thomas K . Gorman New Faclllrles On Sunday December 5, 1962, the dedlcatlon and blesslng of the new T. K. Gorman facllltles took place. Mr. John Bonglovannl, presldent of the Tyler Cathollc School System School Board, was master of ceremonies. Dlstingulshed guest speakers Included Rev. Msgr. John F. Meyers, presldent of the Natlonal Cathollc Educatlon Assoclatlon and a former pastor of Immaculate Conceptlon Church: Sr. Caroleen Hensgen, SSND, superintendent of schools of the Dlocese ol Dallas: Mr. Keatlng Zeppa and Mr. Anthony George, Steerlng Commlttee Co- chalrmen: Mr. Royce Wlsenboker, Bulldlng Commlttee Chalrman: Mr. Charles Halstead, Tyler Mayor Pro Tem: and Mr. V. M. Cameron, representing the Cameron Foundatlon. Closlng remarks were glven by Mrs. Thoy Smlth, prln- clpal of the T. K. Gorman Mlddle School. Blshop Thomas Tschoepe, Blshop of Dallas, offered prayers of blesslng on the Mld- dle School, Communlty Center Bulldlng, fleld By house, and chapel and he presided over the Mass of thanksglvlng. At the dedlcatlon, Blshop Tschoepe asked that the Communlty Center Bulldlng be named the Mllam J. Joseph Communlty Center Bulldlng In honor of Msgr. Mllam Joseph, pastor of the parlsh. under whose leadership the Idea of the new facllltles was concelved and brought to frultlon. According to the program the celebratlon was dedicated to the people of vlslon and courage who, through thelr sacrlflces and con- vlctlons, have bullt and developed thls school system which stands as a slgn of academic ex- cellence ln the Tyler Communlty and to our students, that they wlll have the courage and convlctlon to become responsible adults, capable of maklng the sacrlflces necessary to shape the future of our soclety ln truth, justlce, and charIty.
