MAY 31, 1959 TYLER, TEXAS REIGN OF POPE JOHN XXIII 9 OF of 'QA N Q , 'QA , ER E KS 8 5 The Crusaders' Theme Song For Christ The King An Army of Youth Flying the standards of Truth, We're fighting for Christ, the Lord. Heads lifted high, Catholic Action our cry, And the Cross our only sword. On earth's battle field Never a vantage weA'll yield As dauntlessly on we swing. Comrades true, dare and do 'Neath the Queens white and blue, For our flag, for our faith, For Christ the King. Christ lifts His hands, The King commands: His challenge, Come and follow me. From ev'ry side, With eager stride, We form in the lines of victory. Let foeman lurk, And laggards shirk, We throw our fortunes with the Lord. Mary's Son, Till the world is won, We have pledged you our loyal word. Our hearts are pure, Our minds are sure, No sin our gleaming helmet taints. No foernan fierce Our shield shall pierce, We're Captained by God's Unconquered saints. Yet peace we bring, And a gentle King, Whose law is light and life and love. Mary's Son, May thy will be done, Here on earth as it is above. By Daniel A. Lord, S.J. Vocation Speaker FATHER RAPHAEL KAMEL 51-A-'?l',l!i-?SFl'1'HEF.'i'r, DALLAS 28 0 TEXAS March 16, 1959 Dear Students of Catholic High: Every priest has a very special place in his heart for his home parish and Ifeel that my special place is even larger because my home parish is Tyler . Often I look back to the wonderful days of my boyhood and fondly reflect how much of my priestly pursuits have been crowned with suc- cess because of the basic and fundamental lessons and attitudes I received from the most whole- some and grace filled atmosphere possible to man - His Parish. The impression made on ones youth can never be eradicated and forms the basis for his entire life no matterhow many be the number of his years or the number of miles that separate him from home. Hence with frequent prayers of thanksgiving and gratitude I look back to Immaculate Conception Parish from whose first happiness my priestly happiness increases each day. To all the students of Catholic High School I wish the same blessings of youth that I so enjoyed and will always cherish. Always remember that your school and your parish is often what you make it. Stay close to them, cooperate with them for they are actual graces Which will st eady you during any future crisis. May Our Lady under her title of the Immaculate Conception stay always close to you with a watchful eye, a helping hand, and a kindly smile. With the best of good wishes and prayers always I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Reve rend Raphael Kamel Provincial of Society of Mary FATHER GLENNON MCCARTY, S.M. March 16, 1959 Dear Crusaders: Yours is the great privilege of being the first to occupy the new Catholic High School. You are the first to benefit from the numerous sacrifices generously made so that you may r e c eive a complete spiritual, intellectual, and physical formation. Your parents and teachers and priests are c onfid en t that you will use well your opportunities to become fervent Catholics and God- fearing citizens, of whom they can be rightfully proud. With great admiration have I watched your school become a reality, andlwelcome this occasion to offer you my very sincere congratulations. It is also my hope that I may soon become more closely associated with your magnificent school through the presence of some Brothers of Mary among your teachers. I pray that God may bless all of you and that our Ble s s e d Mother may favor you with her powerful intercession. --Father J. Glennon McCarty, S.M. Recollection Day RETREAT MASTER, FATHER ROGGE A. M. D. G. .IESUIT HIGH SCHOOL 3812 Oak Lawn Avenue DALLAS 19, TEXAS February 19 , 1959 Dear Students of C.H.S.: During our day of recollection we reviewed together many basic t ruths of our Catholic Faith: The 'end of man, man's relationship to God, to his fellow men and to him s e lf. We considered the many gifts of God to each of us as an individual, as a member of our wonderful family, as a student in a great High School and a citizen of the terrific City of Big T, U.S.A. We followed in the path of wise men of the past who said, To be truly wise, 'Know Thyself '. From our private space platform with our high powered telescope, we saw ourselves for the first time as God sees us and as those who deal with us see us. Then studying the personality of Christ and comparing our findings to our s el ve s, we learned how close we are to fulfilling our end, becoming Other Christs. I sincerely believe that you are better prepared now to face the many problems that do come up inateenager's life and intelligently solve them with the help of Monsignor McCullough, his ex- cellent staff at C.H.S. and your wonderful parents . It is my earnest prayer that you will grow more and more like your ideal, Christ. May God bless and Mary love you always as I, Father Norman J . Rogge, S. J. ,W , ,, Parents Association PARENTS ASSOCIATION FORMED A new venture in Parish affairs came into being on Monday evening, September ZZ, 1958, at a meeting in the High School cafeteria. A Parents Association was formed, By Laws were adopted and a slate of officers elected by 103 parents present at this first meeting. Mrs. Betty Jo Finn, President of the Mothers' Club, conducted the meeting and outlined the reasons for the creation of this new association. She explained that our Parish now operates both a grade school and a high school with more students, more parents, more class rooms and more problems and the Mothers Club wanted to be sure that both schools would benefit from the hard work and long hours spent by the Mothers' Club and the Booster Club on school assistance activities. These two clubs have now merged and ask that all parents in the Parish join the new association. The Mothers' Club has become the Mothers Committee and the Booster Club has become the Athletic Committee of the new association. The duties and responsibilities of both com- mittees have been broadened to include both schools. In addition, there is a Program Com- mittee to work for coordination of all Parish affairs, a S oc i al Committee to work with the Student Council, a Publicity Committee and Transportation Committee and an Auditing Com- mittee. Quirk's second and third grade combined their efforts to show the con- trast between the first Thanksgiving and the way we celebrate today. Using various references to learn about the trip on the Mayflower, the children made Pi lg r i rn dolls, cradles, and even the Mayflower in three-dimen- sions. Pictures were drawn to depict the homes, churches, food, and cloth- ing of that period. During their study of plants in Science class, the fourth grade children col- lected seeds and grew seed plants. Some of the results are shown here. Sister Monica Marie is giving one of the award ribbons for the best plant. Awards were also given to the best Seed collection. The pupils of Mrs. J. Van Haverbeke's third grade are shown wo rking on planters which they gave their parents for Christmas. On the boards behind the pupils are pictures made of tex- tiles. All pictures are made fromthe same pattern to show how the diffe- rent materials used can give different effects. Reading is fun, say the first graders in Sister Marie Theodore's class. Because we get to draw what we read, Umm-Umm, Good, say Mrs. J. Martin's children as they learn about good eating in their science class. Extra, . .Extra. . .Read All About It, could be heard coming from the class- room of Grade Two as the last article met the deadline for The Second Grade Star. Under the supervision of Sister Alan Marie, the s tu d e nts collected pictures, labelled them, and placed them in the articles under their proper headings. The newspaper con- sisted of articles of every subject in the second grade curriculum, giving each child an opportunity to become an honorary staff member.
