'I. .','-. .nu . 4-92 I-Zh. unfg: Dear Students, We have reached the end of another year, for some it is the end of their high school career. We have brought you along, edu- cated you, disciplined you in the way of knowledge and truth, estab- lished for you a simple, basic principle, namely: that all wisdom comes from God, from Him we come, in Him we live, and to Him we return. The true pupil learns to value earthly things for what they are really worth. He understands how quickly worldly honors fade and values fluctuate. He knows how short-lived earthly prosperity is as contrasted with the perfect and undying joys of heaven. He realizes how puny and weak human love is when compared to the love of the Infinite God. The lessons of God are suited to each individual whether he uses books, prayer, the sacraments, or personal guidance of a spiritual director. Giving them light to understand and courage for action He reaches their souls through these different means. Pride and self- seeking make him deaf to the truth that too often he hears only the voice of the world. You, too, will hear the voice of the world loud and thunderous yet empty compared to the soft, penetrating Voice of God. Which will you hear? You are being taught but have you learned? It is the earnest prayer of all of us who teach you that you learn- learn Truth. Sincerely yours, The Very Rev. Msgr. D. F. Carmody Superintendent of Catholic Schools

My Dear Students, The greatest teacher the world has ever known was born of a Virgin in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. He came into the world to redeem man and to teach. He came to teach men and women how to live and how to die and how to achieve their goal. '4He taught as one who had authority and His students found themselves amazed at His teachings. It was so different, so revolu- tionary, it contradicted current beliefs. It was so simple and down to earth and reasonable. Yet it was so fantastic that wise and prudent men never believed it could find a place in the practical world. One of the primary lessons this great Teacher stressed was obedience, because disobedience, like an obnoxious weed, grew until it choked out from a practical world harmony, order and peace of mind. For three years this Teacher went about expounding His revolu- tionary doctrines. He summed them all up in a single word, Love Love God above all things because He is the Supreme Good. Love one another because each human soul resembles the Supreme Good far more strikingly than any other created thing in thispvisible world. Love, then, must destroy and supplant hate. The Catholic student must play the role taught him by the Master. He must use all of his energies to continually walk in the footsteps of his Master. He must conquer disobedience by his obedienceg he must expel pride by his humilityg he must drive away hate and supplant it by love. Christ is God. He is the Light of the world. May this Divine Light illuminate the path you will follow through this world to His eternal light in heaven. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. H. V. Devereaux
