“THE LANCE” Volume XVII BISHOP FENWICK HIGH SCHOOL Peabody, Massachusetts 1979 LANCE DEDICATION Thomas F. Roche In memoriam Member of Bishop Fenwick Advisory Board 1973-1978 Star Date: 4 Sept. 1975. Location: Bishop Fenwick High School Log: We have descended upon the World of Fenwick, the only place of its kind in the universe. We have discovered an atmosphere here that is quite unusual. The inhabitants of this world, known as faculty and students, generate a force that is rarely found in human territory. We are amazed at the amount of spirit, dedication and friendliness that is so prevalent in this unique world. Our mission is a challenging one. We have been sent here to prepare for the future; to gain new information in realms ranging from Physics to English. Star Date: 11 May, 1979. Log: We are happy to report that our mission here has been a success. The extraordinary atmosphere of Fenwick has not only taught us book knowledge but has also allowed us to experience a spirit that is difficult to capture. We have prepared this yearbook in an attempt to crystallize that distinct atmosphere that makes Fenwick the special world that it has been to us. We are sorry that our mission is complete. We have enjoyed our time at Fenwick and we regret having to move on to newer and larger worlds. Over the past four years we have come in contact with a special group of people, the faculty. They play an important role at Fenwick, they are friends as well as teachers. This type of dedication is rarely found any place except in a world as unique as Fenwick. Since our first day at Fenwick, the faculty has pre- pared us for embarking on to new frontiers. They have helped us to develop from quiet, impressionable freshmen to outgoing, strong-willed seniors. p i. f . . m 1 1 K 1 u i A t I ■ ’A j a r WL ' MR. NEIL CURLEY GUIDANCE CUSTODIANS SR. Can our stay here be ended when our journey has just begun? Only yesterday we were freshmen, young and confused. Unsure of where we were going, unsure of what we would find, we tiptoed down un- familiar hallways begging to be invis- ible. We slipped into a crowded cafeteria praying for a friendly face or at least the chance to escape un- noticed. We felt the pain and fear of growing up. Still, we made friends, we laughed, we cried, had hopes, dreams and almost overnight, we be- came seniors. Now we walk away. We say good- bye. Our senior year has come to an end. Our applications, S.A.T.’s, Op- eration Charlie, times with Mr. Cur- ley, transcripts and Mrs. O’Hare, the parties, the prom, and graduation are all in the past. It is time for us to move on. We will not soon forget what we have learned here: trust, car- ing, love, and friendship. We are the class of 1979. We are the seniors. LEADERSHIP IS . . The Freshmen force is one of the abundant energy whose source is yet to be discovered. They have been exploring the Fenwick environment and are beginning to realize that the Fenwick world is a special place to be. Although they are a large class, the Sophomore inhabi- tants have grown together and have strengthened their friend- ships. They are full of power and electric excitement which was proven when they won the Most Spirited in the first rally of the year. The beings known as Juniors are busy making preparations UMJtREtflSS People for the time span ahead. They are making the most of their time here. Even though they are working hard, they are always ready to have a good time. The underclassmen are an important part of our world. These beings are another ele- ment that set Fenwick apart as unique and exceptional. ■ 4 Mi- Mark Brings Jonathan Browning Jill Bulat Paula Buresh Daniel Burgess Matthew Cagney Suzanne Caisse Tina It was an experi- ence enjoyed by all; a night to re- member. BLOOD DRIVE The willingness to offer assistance when it is needed is one of the qualities that makes Fenwick such a unique place. By giving blood, the inhabitants of the Fenwick community had the opportunity to help the rest of the world. warn It has been said many times that hard work and determination are neces- sary for success in any- thing. This statement is proved in every game, match, and meet held in Fenwick. The high level of success achieved by Fen- wick athletes is a result of their long hours spent in rigorous practice sessions. At Fenwick, however, it is not only success that counts. The teamwork and discipline that go into par- ticipation are just as impor- tant. Regardless of whether the team is celebrating an exciting victory or coping with a narrow defeat, there is satisfaction in knowing that everyone has given his best. This personal satisfac- tion and personal triumph is the goal of all Fenwick teams and the true mark of success. THE YEAR OF THE CRUSADER 1979 has certainly been an exciting year for the Fenwick Crusaders. In the past few years, the football team has made tremendous progress. With most of last year’s starting lineup re- turning this season, the success of our team was inevitable. Endurance and skill, inspiration and desire, combined with school spirit and support justified classify- ing 1979 as “The Year Of The Crusader”. With a record of 8-2, no one can argue! But aren’t they all great runners, those who win and those who know only the loneliness and pain of preparation? Bishop Fenwick has been fortunate to have a group of cross country runners will- ing to endure the rigors of their training schedule in order to attain a high level of success. The boys and girls team both ran to unde- feated seasons as well as achieving additional hon- ors. For the second con- secutive year, Bishop Fen- wick was the only school in the state in which both the boys and girls teams quali- fied for the All-State Meet. In this competition, the girls team ran strongly to finish third among all of the girls teams in the state; an amazing feat for a school of Fenwick’s size. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Left to right — J. CRUSADER’S BASKETBALL TEAM HAS OUTSTANDING SEASON After ending last year’s season with three deci- sive wins, it looked as though the Crusader’s ’78- ’79 season would be a promising one. And al- though plagued by many problems, including in- jury of two key players, Peter Celona and David Osgood, the team aggressively continued to per- form outstandingly. Captains Brody Broughton and Peter Celona were both chosen Boston Herald American All-Stars of the Week. Brody also has achieved another honor — he has accumulated over 1000 points in his career at Fenwick. The Crusader’s remarkable season is a result of coope ra- tion and true team effort. Boys Varsity Basketball: Left to right — Coach J. Jaworski, C. Hart, R. St. Pierre, R. Hart, B. Bugler, Captain B. Broughton, C. Topel, Captain P. Celona, J. Brennan, E. Caden, D. Murtagh, A. Over the past five years, with a record of 96 wins and 14 losses, the Crusaders have dominated the Catholic League as well as the New England Catholic Tourna- ment. At the start of the ’7 8-’79 season, however, things did not look promising for the young and short Fen- wick team. As a result of the long, hard practice ses- sions, they overcame the height deficiency and with great pride and determina- tion, once again had an outstanding season. One of the biggest thrills of the season was the team’s invitation to play at the Boston Garden. There, they took on a tough St. Mary’s of Cambridge prior to a Celtic’s game, an awe- some and fascinating expe- rience. An additional honor can be claimed by the Crusad- ers; four members of the team were candidates for the Junior Olympics. With Captain Maureen Grabow- ski as the only senior on the team, things look as though they can only get better for the Crusaders of the future. 108 GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL: Left to right — L. GIRLS SHINE IN NEW LEAGUE BOYS CAPTURE CAC A new element of excitement was brought to Girls’ Winter Track this year when for the first time, the team became part of a league. Faced with stiff competition from larger schools, the girls worked with great determination and pride. Their en- thusiasm and spirit led them to a successful 5-2-1 record. The boys team also had an outstanding season, finishing with a record of eight wins and one loss. They were CAC League Co-Champions and Or- lando Lima was selected League Co-MVP. J CRUSADERS SURPRISE NORTH SHORE Working together, combining skills, sharing motivation, every team knows the importance of these things. Although comprised of individual efforts, group support is required for success. This year’s hockey team knows the sweet taste of that success. From the beginning, the coach and team promised the upcoming season to be an exciting and victorious one. In- deed it would be! Determination and hard work would help the skating Crusaders to progress farther than ever before. That unique spirit that says Fenwick inspired and strengthened the pride that took the Brown and Gold to the state finals. 1979 proved once again to be appropriately named, “The Year of the Crusader”.
