BISHOP FENWICK HIGH SCHOOL Peabody, Massachusetts Volume XV THE LANCE Such a land exists you know. It ' s a beautiful land full of magical mysteries with lemondrop sunshine and velvet blue skies. Fields of poppies capture the glow of a rainbow which stretches on forever. Welcoming all adventurers to this mystical world are little people with very big hearts. In excited murmurs they describe an eventful journey which has its beginnings on a yellow-brick raod. While passing through the land of Oz, the traveler encounters many hardships which he must successfully overcome. For awaiting him at the end lies a tremendous city of emerald green. There resides a marvelous wizard who makes every dream a reality and every wish come true. This magical land is not a place that can be reached by boat or train for it lies somewhere behind the moon, beyond the rain. Although it seems unbelievable, such a place can really exist if you want it to. Here at Fenwick, we have created our own land of Oz. Although it is not ideal as in a fairy tale, it is an atmosphere which belongs uniquely to us — a world created through our spirit and our pride in ourselves and one another. Each of us, during our years at Fenwick, travels along our own individual road and, although we are often faced with difficulties, we realize that through our efforts, the dreams we dare to dream really may come true. We too, are much like the people of Oz. For the optimism and friendliness which is so much a part of that land is prevalent in our own world as well. Since the desire to belong is so strong within each of us, only an atmosphere such as this allows us to grow separately and also together. Young Dorothy voiced our sentiments when she softly said, “There ' s no place like home. Even if only for a fleeting moment in time, Fenwick has been our home and a wonderful place to be. People — what would our lives be without them? They ' re always there to share a joke or a story, a laugh or a quiet moment. Such are the people who make up our Land of Oz — our world at Fenwick. We are all individu- als like the scarecrow, the lion and the tinman, each with our own unique personalities and ideas. Together, we choose the colors which create the rainbow of our lives. LAND OF OZ rr. IV These ruby slippers will help you to travel the Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy. Munchkins are small, lovable people, not quite big enough to make it on their own, yet not too small to stand on their own two feet and make decisions for themselves. At Fenwick, the Munchkins are the Underclassmen. The Freshmen bring enthusiasm as they adjust to the new environment of high school. A strengthening of spirit marks the progress of the Sophomores. For the Juniors, a growing awareness of themselves and the world makes the time pass quickly. Each Munchkin adds zest and laughter to life in the Land of Oz. For, in reality, the faculty here at Fenwick is comprised of many fine individuals. Through their understanding and willingness to offer help, they have enriched our lives in a very special way. It is these people who have helped us set down the bricks that will form the yellow brick road for our future. 47 %sm GUIDANCE Mr. Neil Curley Rev. Whatever our interest, there is always some way to get involved in the spirit of Fenwick. Whether it be through committees, clubs or social events, we will always find something happening. For this sharing of happy times, this planning of dreams is “how we pass the time away in our Merry Old Land of Oz.” ACTIVITIES 85 Layout Staff, Seated, left to right: Carolyn Shuko, Cathy Opolski, Kathy Gauthier, Joan Ingraham, Judy Flaherty, Beth Prescott. As we look back we realize that our hardships that once seemed so difficult were just stepping stones through our Land of Oz. From Freshman Day to Graduation, from the collapse of the foyer to the anguish of the SAT ' s, each experience has broadened our sphere of understanding, both of ourselves and of our place in the future. Like Dorothy and her friends, our “yellow brick road” has car- ried us through a time where dreams were vital and our quest was common. We ' ve had our time for daring to dream and our time for allowing these dreams to come true. We must now move out of our own special Oz into a world where it will be much harder to dream. Our Land of Oz is now drawing to a close and we must leave the security we have clung to for four years and enter a world that is a mystery to us. We, like Dorothy ' s friends, have helped each other find the intelligence, the heart, and the courage that it takes to go on. So, although we are leaving Oz, in a very true sense we are taking much of Oz with us in our treasured memories and our old friends. With all the rich- ness of our Land of Oz, we move on to start making our dreams come true.
