In pursuit and attainment of the impossible, we will be rewarded by fulfillment. This is the dominant theme — fulfillment through pursuit of the impossible that underscores our educa- tion in the Humanities. Our view now encompasses other peo- ple, other places, other times. History gives us a stark glance at how things were. Literature tells us what they are. Religion speculates as to what they might be. Fulfillment lies in our ability to take what there is of the present and mold a future free of the mistakes of the past. 14
