THE MISCELLA Y 1955 613 v wa u 'fwx BISHOP ENGLAND HIGH SCHOOL Charleston, South Carolina 0l 8lfU0l One picture is worth a thousand wordsf, So as We open this 1955 edition of The Miscellany, this picture re- minds us of the three-day retreat which was held here at Bishop England last March. It is especially fitting that the first picture in The Miscellany is one of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. For here at Bishop England we receive the beneiits of a Catholic education. Religion is not confined to just one class, one small part of our day. Instead We are taught to live our religion daily, to love and cherish our Catholic Faith. In this Way We realize that our Catholic Faith is vastly more important than all our clubs and activities here at school. For when we leave Bishop England, we leave all our classes behind, but We take with us that one thing which will guide us throughout our lives-our Catholic Faith. WM' thirty SEBI!! sw-M-fr HISTORY At last we were really in high school! Yes, we were the freshmen of ,52. VVe had as- cended to the second floor and it was there that we labored over the noblest language of them alln and were bewildered by the l'XYZ'sv of algebra. During this year the school was deeply saddened by the death of our beloved founder, Father O,Brien. Coach Hank VV itt made his appearance at B. E. H. S. in 352. This was the man who was to produce some of the finest teams in the schoolis history. In our sophomore year we were being recognized a little more! We knew Latin a little better now, but we still were puzzled by algebra. The football team was improv- ing under the noble efforts of Coach Witt. Gur May Festival was a great success this year. But time passed quickly, and before we could get to the third floor, our sopho- more year had ended, still on the second floor. After our summer vacation Cwhich seemed all too shortl we returned to the hallowed halls of Bishop England as Juniors. VVe de- manded a little more respect from our under- classmen, and they graciously obliged. The C.Y.O. Canteen was established to the delight of all the school. This year we were busily engaged in the activities of practically every club in the school, and how we loved it! Banquets, conventions, dances came so fast we could hardly catch our breath, and at the junior-senior we smiled compassionately as we watched the seniors bid a tearful goodbye. All of a sudden we were seniors! The Class of 155. As we were caught in the whirl of club meetings, parties, and a mil- lion and one other activities, we had hardly noticed the year was almost over. We saw both our football and basketball teams go undefeated, and cheered the basketball team off to the tournament in Rhode Island. We received our class rings, struggled over our term papers, addressed invitations, and trembled as we prepared to take our final exams. WV e passed! Now comes our junior- senior, Class Night, and Graduation at the Cathedral-tears, laughter, and congratula- tions. And as we walk slowly down the aisle, we know that we shall always remem- ber Bishop England as the place where we gathered knowledge to prepare us for our life ahead and as a place where we had some wonderful aims. NVe hope that Bishop Eng- land will always remember the class of '53, and in turn we know that we shall never forget our years at B. E. H. S. R. The undefeated Bishops overwhelmed 10 op- ponents in their seasonis course. Since last yearis defeat by Charleston High, our arch rival, the Bishops have won 18 consecutive games. In the first game of the season, the Green Wave had no trouble rolling over the St. Paul Pirates by a score of 20-0. Frankie Eaton was the big man in the Bishopis of- fense, scoring 2 of the 3 touchdowns, Tommy Vaught scored the other one. The entire middle of the Bishopis line was impregnable, holding the Pirates to no score. The Bishops avenged their one-point loss of last year by outplaying their arch rivals, Charleston High, in the second game of the season. A crowd of 5,000 fans saw the Ban- tams take a 6-point lead early in the first quarter. The Bishops came back in the first quarter to tie the game and later went on to win it 21-13. Frankie Eaton tallied for 2 of the 3 touchdowns, with Pug Ravenel going over for one. A large part of the credit for the win goes to the line, who held the Ban- tams down to only 2 touchdowns. After a weekls rest the Bishops traveled to Myrtle Beach where they wrapped up the 11th win. The Bishops tallied all of their 26 points in the first half. Bavenel took the honors by scoring 2 of the Bishops, 4 touch- downs. End Lipv LaTorre and Frankie Eaton scored the remaining two, LaTorre on a 25 yard dash after capturing a blocked punt. Frankie Eaton took the most exciting play by streaking 73 yards for the final touch- down. The Bishops easily beat the Carlisle Mili- tary Academy eleven 46-6. The Bishops scored in every period to win their fourth straight game of the season. The touch- downs were well distributed among the Bishops, with even a line man scoring. Basketball History tC0n'tD vears and were now attempting to make it three in a row. ln the first round the Bishops met a stubborn St. Iohn's team who gave them a hard time for a quarter, but after that the Bishops proved too much power in stripping them 80 to 35. Clair, Gorman, and Finnegan collected 17, 16, and 14 points respectively. This vic- tory made it now nineteen in a row. Bishop England versus Belmont Abbey. These two teams now playing in the finals had met twice before, both times in the finals, the Bishops winning both games, The Bishops had a prcttly rough time in topping the Ramblers but proved to we too much in stop Jing them T9 to 60 with Danny Rohlingf playing his lbest game. Rohling tore the cords up for seven free throws and seven field goals for a total 21 oints. The Bishops made it three years in a row to talge the revolving trophy home for good. This victory now made it number 20 in a row. Bevo,' Clair received the tournament,s most valu- able player award, with Eaton and Finnegan making the All-Tournament team. After the Tournament, the Bishops continued on with the regular season by stopping the Charles- ton High School Bantams 56 to 40, This was the third time this season that the Bishops had beaten the Bantams. The victory was due to the constant teamwork which proved to be the weapon most used by the Bishops all season. Twenty-one wins and no losses! Will they go un- defeated, or will Rivers get sweet revenge and snap the streak! It was close but the Bishops stopped the Bears in a thriller, 59 to 56. The same type game they played the First time except for the overtime. The Bish- ops made it 22 in a row and won the opinion of the fans as the best basketball team ever produced in this area and at the school. The Bishops were at their best, ninety-nine and no one could stop them. Francis Clair, Frank Eaton and Tommy Finnegan were the big men for the contest, each playing a very determined and consistent brand of ball. That pressure off, the Bishops had a breather', in taking the North Charleston Blue Devils 60 to 50. Tommy Finnegan collected 21 points to be high man for the game. This was victory number 2.3! Only one more left for the season, and they could make history by becoming the first undefeated basketball team in the history of the school. Well, they did what no other team could do in the Charleston area for the past decade of years. The Bishops were hard pressed in stopping the College of Charleston Frosh 50 to 42, wrap ming up a perfect season. After such a fine season, time boys won themselves a trip to Rhode Island to participate in the Eastern States Catholic lnvitational Tournament at Newport. They were without the services of their ace center, 'iBevo,' Clair, and were defeated by a more aggressive type of basketball. The boys made a pretty good show- ing, but not what they could have done, of cours:, playing their best, but thev were entirely outclassed. The Bishops were dropped by a red hot De LaSalle of Newport, 90 to 55. They put up a hard fight the Hrst half but were gradually worn down by the much taller opponents. They were not yet out of the running, though, lor they played in a consolation game in which they lost again, 76 to 52 to Central Catholic of Pitts- burgh. They boys lived up to their reputation of always bringing home the bacon, however. The team won the Sportsmanship award for exemplary conduct on the floor and off the iioorf and Manager Buddy Sirisky with his Golden Horn received an entertainment trophy. The Miscellany extends most sincere congratulations to all those on the team-and heartfelt thanks to all the supporters who helped the Bishops make their trip to Rhode Island. B.
