Reilly. Diocesan Superintendent of Schools. Construction proceeded immediately under the direction of Henry D. Dagit and Sons, archi- tects, and Mccloskey and Co., general con- tractor. in Septemher of 1956, the majority of the student hody tor the future high school was at- tending lmmaculate Conception School, Levit- town. and St. Ann School in Bristol. The completion of the school in 1957, was ciimaxed with the solemn dedication on Novem- her 2, of the same year, hy the Most Rev. John Cardinal Q'Hara, C.S.C., D.D., Archbishop of Philadelphia. The Very Rev. Adrian J. M. Viegie, Provincial of the Franciscan Fathers. Third Order Regular, presided at the cornerstone laying cere- mony held on the same day. Located on Levittown Parlcway, just off Route 15. the new four story building houses a chapel, 52 classrooms, laboratories, auditorium-gymnas- ium, cafeteria and offices. Bishop Egan High School, named in memory of Bishop Michael Egan, a Franciscan and the first Bishop of Philadelphia, has facilities for 1,800 pupils. The student hody numbered 607 in two years with 355 freshmen-254 sophomores. Additional classes were added to the freshman and sophomore curriculum until it reached the full four year course. Gillespie, Reverend John Nugent, Reverend Joseph D. Gallagher. Rt. Reverend Msgr. Edward M. Reilly and Reverend Arthur P. Elliott loolr on. Cardinal O'Hara has placed the administra- tion ohthe school under the direction of the Franciscan Fathers. T.O.R. The Very Rev. Regis Stafford T.O.R., principal, headed a beginning faculty of seven Franciscan Fathers, three Sisters Servants oi the immaculate Heart of Mary, three Sisters of Mercy, two Sisters of the Most Holy Trinity, and one lay teacher. The History of Bishop Egan is indeed a glorious one and will linger long in the minds and hearts of all. The Most Reverend John Cardinal O'Hara, is assisted hy Rt. Reverend lvlsgr. Joseph McGlynn, Reverend Joseph B. Diamond, and T Ledger iacolyte, during the dedication ceremony.
