On the third lloor ol our school stands a room dilllerent from all the others. Here, one does not see the usual array of hlacltlaoards, deslts, and hoolts. Yet, within these walls the greatest lessons ol all limes are taught daily to every student who enters the quiet peace and serene stillness, For it is while ltnei-ling here, beneath the gentle glow ol tht- sanctuary lamp that truths divine are forever im- pressed upon the hearts and minds ol Bishop Egan students. An Omniseient 'l-eacher dwells here, who paracloxically enough, instructs in silence and se- clusion lqrom the depths ol the tabernacle. Though hidden, Our God is not forgotten. Because ol' His Real Presence among us, a God-Consciousnessl' pervades every action ol our school day, instilling lrue purpose and energizing spirit into everything we do, thinlc, or say. Thus, in this silent room we call our Chapel is found the true meaning of Bishop Egan High School . , . GOD. For upon God and His Love our school was established: with God and His Grace. our school lives and growsg to God and His Heaven, our school points tht- way. Vve like to thinlc of this way to Heaven as the 'llorvian Vvay-The Franciscan Vvay, as it in- spires us, not only through the Life ol the Pover- ello, hut also as it is embodied in the daily lives of the Franciscan Fathers and all who teach us. This Torvian Vvay is one of simplicity, joy, and love where each lives lor the other. and all live lor C-od. Thus, do we see that hesides an education, Bishop Egan High School imparts something much more important . . . Love ol God. which is the spiritual lodestone drawing us to Heaven. Carson. i m in the very first year of its infancy, 1957, we discovered something very wonderful about our school -' its gilt ol: song. Lilie all newly-found talents, we wished to exercise it immecliately. VVilh a no-sooner-said-than-done aiacrity, Sister Ana- stasia, OSST.. had formed us into a Glee Club that even then, though only in its formative year, was prepared to malce public appearances in con- junction with two school plays, The following year marlced a truly great event in our musical career, as dressed in formal attire and singing our ioveliesl, we were privileged to present another first at Bishop Egan -- a school musicale. Under the direction of hflr, John Bunnell we sang with all our hearts for we wanted everyone to love these songs as we: uselections from Sigmund Rom- bergu, Schubert? Ave Nlariaf' and our own Alina ivlateru which rang out that night for rhi- lirst time. Yes, music does have charms. And so. this year. with Father Canice, our moderator, and Wir. Zenone, our director, we hope to sing more Ncharminglyn than ever before. Thus shall we come to resemble our beloved npoverellon who cherished and loved most clearly his gilt of song. 0l'l'lel'lf ufuca fi- Ever-laitlvful and mlepennlalnlc are our nccompanists, Francine Kauffman and Niary Oettel. 5vsgfl 3 E N we aunt wa, ,, In the two short years of its musical history. Bishop Egan has accomplished the almost unhe- lievahle, hy producing three separate bands, each worthy of distinction and deserving of the highest commendation. For hard work, self-sacrifice, and school spirit the students comprising these groups are unparalleled. Organized and sparked through the combined efforts of Father Frederic, T.O.R. fmoderatorl. lxflr. Kenneth Lesniclc. Band Director, and Nlr. Vvilliam Quilty. Drill Nlaster, the Nlarching Band captured Five trophies during the i950-l960 season. Numbering approximately eighty-five instru- ments, the Concert Band has succeeded in captur- ing the hearts of all Bishop Egan music-lovers, while to the inimitable rhythmic Dance Band goes the distinction of having brought the very first music award home to the school. U0 youd v After fifteen brief years of life on earth, Mary Ellen Hagan has attained that ultimate goal for which we all strive and must continue to strive after, perhaps for many years . . . Heaven. Swift, secure, and saintly was the moment of her going home to God. How could it have been otherwise since Our Blessed Mother had a particular interest in lVlary Ellen? Given Our Lady's name in Baptism, attending a grade school espe- cially dedicated to Gods Holy lxflother under the title of The Immacu- late Conception. Mary E.llen's deep love and devotion to our Heavenly Queen, had been instilled. in early childhood, and grew with her as she advanced in wisdom, age and grace. From her own dear lVlother's example, Mary Ellen had learned the value of saying The Hail lVlary in time of danger or anxiety. How fitting, then, that on February second, the Feast of Our l..ady's Purification, Maw Ellen's soul was purified for the last time from the least stain through the Last Rites ol the Church, and thus prepared to he presented to the Lord. Those of us who lmew and loved Mary Ellen, especially in her Home- room Section, feel deeply honored that God has chosen one of us to he the First Bishop Egan Student. to he numbered among the Blessed. We lmow, too, that it is because God loves Mary Ellen very much that He chose her. ln our hearts we will ever cherish her: in our prayers we will ever remember her: in our needs we will pray to her, for we lcnow Mary Ellen is a saint hecause Mary Ellen is with God. The following year, the Eagles did score, but the coveted first victory never came. We had to he content with one tie, while sul'- lering through eight defeats, most of them played in weather which was anything hut lavoralole. Last year's climate improved, and so did the Eagles. Bishop Egan's football team, under Coaches Mr. Richard Bedesem and Mr. John Lawn, tasted victory for the first time, and found it to their liking, as they won four more contests, on a schedule noted for its ruggedness. That small sophomore squad laid the ground- worlc for the giant who will never stop growing in alaility and sportsmanship, the Bishop Egan Football Team. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost . . . thus it all began. Before we knew it, we, the Students of Bishop Egan were participating in our first May Pro- cession. Following those preceding us, we walicecl slowly, reverently, saying the rosary. Every step as well as every Hail Mary was a prayer of loving tribute to Our Heavenly Queen . . . No fanfare . . . no woricily pomp and circumstance had any place in this living offering we were pre- sentingg--for, on this lovely May-Day we were giving ourselves to Mary. With the simplest words, we praised Her: attirecl in the simplest of dress: we approached Her: and with the most delicate Howers, we crowneci Her-Mother of God. We imeit hefore Her--Our Mother-to re- ceive Her blessing. Then, in a fitting and just manner, we sang His praises and felt the Divine Power and Holiness of the outstretched Hands of Christ raised above our heads in a final Benedic- tion. Another First For Bishop Egan--Father Regis addressed parents and students on the importance of a college education, and wammly welcomed the many Priests. Sisters, Brothers, and Laymen who were representatives from the various Catholic Colleges. Bishop Egan's First Annual College Night proved to he a most beneficial and highly successful event, judging from the interested and enthusiastic response of all who participated. The purpose of College Night was to familiarize parents and students with the aims, curricula, and requirements of those colleges in which they might he interested. This new venture was organized hy Father Noel, Bishop Egan's spirited Prelect of Studies who spear- headed another first with his usual energy and en- thusiasm. As a result of Fathers excellent planning, twenty-four Catholic colleges were represented and approximately eight hundred parents and students attended. Father John J. Vvelsh.
