Something new was tried this year, a color dayl Each class wore a different color, and students seemed to enjoy the variety. The traditional powder puff game was played, and the Seniors emerged tri- umphant. Spirit Week was especially exciting this year because B.D. was matched against Snider, contender for S.A.C. Championship. The students showed their enthusiasm at the pep rally on Friday afternoon. The Saints were really fired upl B P wC I H Hi 4 Juniors decorate the hall for Spirit Week 5 Lorrlne Guthrie. Β« Β« Gifts of water, wine, and the Holy Eucharist are offered during the mass. J This year, as always, the Bishop Dwenger Student Body participated in mass. The Mass is an intimate part of the lives of all of us at Bishop Dwenger. It is a time when we can come together and thank God for the many gifts we have received. Among these are the three major that Bishop Dwenger al- ways stresses: religion, family, and education. During the masses, we are always made aware of how important these things are. All of us appreciate the fact that we are lucky enough to have them. The Juniors, especially, were thankfull at the beautiful mass to honor them, and support them on Ju- nior Day. Bishop McManus honored us by saying mass on Bishop Dwenger Day. 18 Masses Father Shafer prepares us to receive communion. The students are always a big part of the Bishop Dwenger masses. We Thank The Lord! One of our privelages in attending a Catholic school is receiving the Holy Eucharist. Masses 19 h c fi r s p -- ■€ c E i |i_. B fi-. β€” p ' Β«( n T ' . Β£ p . We received other awards for our pom pon routine, notebook, spirit and individ- ual talents. We were also chosen as the best all around squad. During the school year, we had several fund raisers, prepared pep sessions, decorated lockers and many other things. The B.D. cheerleaders took on quite a different look this year. With the addi- tion of three male cheerleaders, our spirit and mounts soared higher than ever. We owe much gratitude to our modera- tor, Mrs. Nelson. Thanks For All That Is To Come . . . Yes April 23, 1982 was a very fun-filled day that is sure to be remembered by all the Juniors. Ju- nior Day 1982 began with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Shafer and Fr. Steiglitz. With a theme, For everything that has been, thanks . . . For ever- ything that is to come, yes. , the Juniors re- flected on their duties as Catholic adults, next year and throughout their lives. After the Mass, the Juniors were dismissed for the day to enjoy the afternoon with their friends. Some students left the confines of Ft. Wayne to picnic and party at Pokagon State Park. Others drove to Chain-0-Lakes State Park to enjoy the beautiful, sunny afternoon in a similar manner. Some students went to par- ties at friends ' houses. The day was capped with a casual dance in the Dwenger cafeteria. Most Juniors attended and found this to be a perfectly rowdy end to Junior Day 1982. 84 Junior Day The choir ' s excellent singing accompanied the Junior Day Mass. Dave Kinniry ' s Inspiring words with background of the theme of Chariots of Fire made the day even more special. The Juniors enjoyed a delicious luncheon at the Heritage House, as shown here by Lisa Arata and Kelly Newell. June 6, 1982 was a very special day for Fort Wayne. International figure and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mother Teresa, visited Fort Wayne and delivered a speech in the Bishop Dwenger gym. Everything began when Fr. Steve Morrison of the Crosier Center sent a letter to Mother Teresa in India inviting her to come to Fort Wayne. To his astonishment, she replied that she would come. Mother Teresa arrived at Baer Field Airport on Saturday. She spent the night at the Crosier Cen- ter. A Mass was celebrated the next morning fol- lowed by a press interview of Mother Teresa. By 2:00 that afternoon the Bishop Dwenger gym was filled with about 3,000 people. Mother Teresa ' s speech commenced at about 2:00. Mayor Win Moses, Bishop McManus and Bishop Crowley were present. Mother Teresa ' s speech focused on loving one another as Christ taught us. She repeated her strong stance against abortion. She also stressed strengthening the family. Her forty minute speech was very moving and inspiring. Mother Teresa left Fort Wayne directly after her speech at Dwenger. Her stop here was one of a series of visits in the United States. Mother Teresa greeted several people at Dwenger. The woman whom many consider a living saint addressed the Fort Wayne crowd. This humble, petite woman has touched the lives of a vast number of people. 112 Mother Teresa i- J The crowd remained extremely quiet and attentive during Mother Teresa ' s speech. Mayor Win Moses delivered a short speech before Mother Teresa spoke. Mother Teresa spoke of the need to love one another as Christ kived us and taught us. The thrills came in defeating our arch rival Bishop Luers and being tied in the SAC standings with Snider. The agony came in losing to Snider at one of the biggest turnouts in Fort Wayne football history. But most agonizing was losing to Lafayette Jeff at the state quarterfinals. The Saints were one of the best teams in the city this year. Our team was led by a super group of seniors and was backed by a talented group of juniors and underclassmen. The coaching staff led by Coach Johns did a great job. His assistants were Coach Tone, Coach Ray, Coach Koester, Coach Taylor, Coach Bloom. They devoted a tre- mendous amount of time and effort so that our athletes were in top form. Coach Tone yells advice to his team. lis Football SCOREBOARD VARSITY B.D. OPP. S.B. Ginny Steger Sharon Kaltenmark Mrs. Steger types a reference for one of the students. The Guidance Department this year was kept extremely busy. Mrs. Hall found out how eager the juniors were to plan their senior schedule and make sure all their credits were in order. Mrs. Kaltenmark had her hands full with over two hundred seniors all having questions about col- lege and wanting information about scholarships. As sec- retary, Mrs. Steger saw that the guidance staff was run- ning as smoothly as possible. Because of the great work of the guidance department the students body of Bishop Dwenger had a productive year. Mrs. Kaltenmark takes time out of her busy schedule to read the school paper. The students had time during their lunch period to do some homework or just relax with a good book. Many teachers gave their students time during class to go to the library and do some research. The audio-visual equipment stored in the library added many teachers. Throughout the year students and fac- ulty members found the library to be a place to relax and learn. The students were also given a chance to show their gymnas- tic ability and weight lifting skills. The best part of gym for many students is when they learn to square dance. The purpose of gym is to help students to become more coordinated and to bet- ter their health. Another part of the gym department is Health and Safety which instructs students on functions and first aid. Katie knows that her freshman gym class helped her athletically. They also learn about nutrition and the benefits of a balanced diet. In cloth- ing class the students are taught how to save money by making their own clothes. In a rather different are class Mr. Herber teaches his students drafting and how to make precise drawings. All the art classes allow the students to discover their inter- ests as well as learn a wide variety of skills. Academics 153 The Mighty But Few Mrs. Jehl instructes the band to slow down the tempo. These saxophone players must have good lungs to blow out such great sound. The band had a very busy and trium- phant year. It all began with the band getting an excellent rating at the Nor- throp Contest. The contest at Wayne H.S. ensured the band a gold medal and a silver medal. A stage band has been formed by Mrs. Jehl and they did many different things over the course of the year. The stage band went to two nursing homes and performed concerts. They also played at all the home basketball games. Mrs. Jehl taught the band students very much this year and Mrs. Levy taught the or- chestra and prepared them for the Spring Musical. The band gives the student body a taste of excellence by preforming a few tunes. 154 Band These students give a flare of beauty to mass Chorus is a half hour long class which is taken during a students lun ch peri- od. It is taught by Mrs. Levy. She teaches her students to read music and helps them better their singing voices. Mrs. Levy also teaches concert chorus, which is an hour long class. It is a harder class and gets into more de- tail of music. All the chorus students have four major concerts while the concert chorus students also do spe- cial concerts for different events. The whole music department takes much pride in what they have accomplished. The best part of chorus is singing for others at a concert. The other half of sophomore year, sophomores took Mass S Sacraments. Juniors were intro- duced to a new member of the Dwenger Staff, Sister Dolores, who teaches Teachings of Christ. Juniors were also instructed in religion, not of Catholic religion, but of Bud- dhism, Judism and other forms of religion. And for the seniors, they learned what mar- riage was all about and social issues. Mrs, Levy tells these girls what marriage is really about, from experience. Mrs. Cornell and one of her students read more about Islamic society. Every student must be able to express his ideas in such a manner that they can be easily and clearly understood. To help students in this task one must have taken one of the many English classes offered at Dwenger. Some of the varied classes offered are, Ameri- can Lit., English Lit, College Prep., Mass Media, Speech and Creative Writing. All of the classes give stu- dents a chance to express themselves and learn some things about literature. There are two men and eight women in the English staff who are all working hard to better students English skills. Mrs. Simmons says, tres par- fait to Theresa Klingenberger. Learning a different language is hard as some of these facial expressions show. Marian Simmons The foreign language department this year gave students four different languages to choose from to better their read- ing, speaking, and listening skills. These four choices are French, Spanish, German, and Latin. Mrs. Simmons and Mrs. Klemme taught French while Mrs. Brown taught Latin. The Spanish teachers were Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Oberstar. A new addition to the B.D. staff was Mrs. Klaffke who taught Ger- man. Learning a foreign language can be very difficult, but with the fabulous instruction from the teachers, the students learned to speak and understand a different language. The students were also aided by the experience of the language lab. Vincent Mastrangelo is more intrigued with making a straight line them doing algebra. 164 Math Mike Thompson Harriet HInkle Whether it be simple addition equa- tions or complex calculus theories of maxima and minima, the Mathematics Department gives many students basic math background for college and life. The math courses at Bishop Dwenger are numerous and include: Elementary Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigo- nometry, and Pre-Calculus. Those stu- dents with higher math ability may take honors classes. Three men, Mr. Meyers, Mr. Labrosse and Mr. Thomp- son, and three women. Dr. Ruiz, Mrs. Hinkle, and Mrs. Goehring, teach var- ious classes in this field. Even for the easiest course, ma ny students find that half an hour of homework is a vacation compared to the usual. In math perhaps more than any other course, practice makes perfect. Mary and Jan would rather gossip than learn anything about algebra. Mr. Thompson and his pointer are unseparable. Sister explains what a chemical reaction is. What has Joann Stump found that is so interesting? Bryan Conley takes time from class to organize his papers. Bishop Dwenger offers a wide variety of science courses, including Advanced Biol- ogy, Chemistry and Physical Science. Two new teachers were added to the science department, Mr. Phillips and Mr. Swartz both teach sophomore biology. As all stu- dents of science have found out labs are an important part of science curriculum. Lab gives the students a break from the usual routine of lectures and films, and it also gives students a chance to validate what they learn by proving it themselves. Wheth- er you ' re a chemistry student balancing equations, a biology student working on a dissection or a physics student writing that last formula the lesson is the same: applica- tion of basic facts to a problem. Dave Scudder Frank Ray These students are more interested in what ' s trump than what ' s Reaganomics. Helping students learn about past events is the goal of the Social Studies Department. The teachers of U.S. His- tory, Mr. Tone, Mr. Jones, Mr. Scudder and Mr. Koester try to teach students how our country was formed. They teach us the mistakes of our forefa- thers so we may not repeat the mis- takes. Mr. Koester also teaches World History which gives students the chance to learn past and present events of other countries. Mr. Johns and Mr. Ray teach Government. Gov- ernment is very helpful for seniors for it teaches them how politics is set up and aids them in understanding the working of todays democracy. Phil Fenker ' s mind seems to be somewhere else. Mrs. Cornell, our yearbook moderator, gave much of her time and patience to help us through this year. Without her, we ' d still be working on our first few pages. She helped the staff from deadline to deadline, keeping everything under control. I would like to thank the whole yearbook staff. They all did a tremendous job. My assistant co- editors Debbie Carteaux, and Patty Hudak put forward the best of their talents to make this yearbook the best ever. They both started working in the fall and never quit the whole year. I would also like to thank each of my section editors: Liz Bakle (academics), Carolyn Bookmyer (activities), and Mary Romie (students). The section editors have one of the most time consuming jobs, and all three did a great job. There are so many people that contributed in countless other ways that they all can ' t be listed, but I ' d like to mention a few. Thank-you to Watters Studio, Frank Bougher, John Freiburger, Bob Uecker, and Dan Huhn who took all of our pictures for us. They were very understanding with our request for more. I would like to thank Mary Brombereck for working on the sports section, and last but not least I want to thank everyone who helped me type, especially Cindy Stoody and Lorrie Freiburger, and those who wrote body copy. Thanks, LC-; . r β–  ter H- β€’ β– w % Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some shall live forever Daniel 12. DOROTHY RAISON November I, 1918 β€” January 10. 1982.
