Through community Masses and reflection services, students come to under- stand their relationship with God. Our faith was the constant which set us apart and united us. Some mem- bers of the senior class, prepared to make a deep committment to their faith, became Eucharistic ministers and conducted communion services in the chapel. Many students contri- buted their time and talent to help make the many Dwenger community celebrations memorable. The Pasto- rale Care Team, in particular, offered their time and talent towards mak- ing the celebrations possible. There was never a shortage of volunteers who were willing to participate in the celebration itself or in the planning and writing of the service. The Masses at Bishop Dwenger were tru- ly student celebrations. Opening 3 Students Become Involved In Extracurricular 4 Opening Activities 1. Leann Lerch, Maria Vinci, and Jane Roberts 2. The students weren ' t blind, even though their clothes didn ' t look at all coordinated. The students were living up to the expectations of Clash Day . The next day put everyone back into the Southwestern days in the 1800 ' s. Boots, spurs, hats, and holsters were worn by all. Stick ponies transported students to class. Cap-gun duels were fought in the halls. This was Western Day . For the two days following, stu- dents dressed in suits, dresses, and high heels. The halls and cafeteria were decorated with posters, balloons, and streamers. What did all of this mean? Spirit Week at B.D. High! Opening 1. Terry Derloshon, Dondo, Otis, Todd Eagan 2. During the day, a record crowd of students participated in the festivities. Students got involved in pudding-eating, best leg, egg-throwing, Cakewalk, and other con- tests. In the evening, there was a large turn-out for the football game. Even though we lost to North Side, the excite- ment of the evening was not lost. At half- time, prom queen Beth Shubert was crowned. After the game, many couples attended the homecoming dance. Opening 11 Dwenger: Something For Everyone In keeping with Dwenger ' s tradition for scholastic excellence, the school ' s administration offered an unpara- lelled academic program. Along with the usual history, science, English, math, home economics, music, and business courses, many new honors courses were added. Many gifted stu- dents enjoyed the challenge of par- ticipating in an honors course. The freshmen were initiated into high- school-level work while many sen- iors staggered under the load of weighted classes. While some seniors prepared for vocations, others looked forward to college. The infamous col- lege-prep course, which every stu- dent cursed while he took but after- ward acknowledged its helpfulness, accustomed seniors to college-level work. Other courses aided students in their college preparation. In addition to and suplementing the fine academic program at Dwenger, the high quality BD teaching staff made this year a truly outstanding one. Lending their support and knowledge, teachers, advisers, and coaches urged and encouraged stu- dents to always strive to give 100%. A great debt is owed the teachers who took a special interest in the students and gave their time and leadership in the form of activities. Teachers also had to adjust to the snow days and fog days, no matter how much they upset the lessen plan! 12 Opening 1. Scott Sorg and Pete Prowant 2. Nancy Voirol 3. Tim Landstoffer 4. Many areas of study were pursued: music, science, math, art, home-economics, writing, theology, band, and business. Throughout the year, the faculty faithfully instructed the students. A new concept in career planning was attempted. During the semester in- terim, a career week was sched- uled. All students participated in the welcome break from studies. Many programs supplemented the regular instruction at BD. Special honors courses were established to challenge the especially adept students, and they proved successful. Presenting: The Class Of 1981 U r £x  tvW JpNsf «S S -oir There was an unexpectedly large crowd at graduation: all of the seniors showed up! Andre McConnell lets out a sigh of relief as he receives his diploma. The class of 1981 graduated on May 31, 1981 in the Dwenger gym. Parents, family, and friends looked on as 220 seniors re- ceived their diplomas. Mr. Fred Tone was the guest speaker, giving the graduates some words of encouragement as they be- gin this new part of their lives. Diplomas were given out by Mr. Gaughan. The rest of the afternoon was spent celebrating the accomplishments of the class of 1981. Mr. Gaughan gives the seniors advice and reminds them of the importance of intestinal fortitude. Faculty: We Learn By Their Example mr Administration: The Central Network As dean of students, Mr. Herber was kept busy determining what the students were up The administration is literally the central network of the entire school. It has a team of hardworking, dedi- cated people who are willing to give their best for everyone in school. Working together, this team will keep our school in its best shape. These people really let the Dwenger pride shine through! Mrs. Jehl was the band director and the assistant dean of students. 48 Administration The Office: A Busy Intersection. The smiling face of Mrs. Passino was a familiar one in the front office. % , Being admissions clerk has its ups and downs, but one knows whatever the problem, Mrs. Ocken will quickly solve it. As Mr. Gaughan ' s secretary, Mrs. Maher was kept busy and rarely found time to read the newspaper. Handling the financial end of the administration, Mrs. Altmeyer headed the business department. It always seemed that Mrs. Holly would never get her typing done because she was always being interupted! Guidance: Showing Us The Ways To Go Mrs. Kaltenmark was always ready to give advice to anyone who asked This year, the Bishop Dwenger Guidance department helped many students choose classes, colleges, and discover new career choices. Mrs. Kaltenmark, Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Steger all worked very hard to make this year a success. Mr. Meyer also helped out in scheduling. The entire department helped out the seniors who were always asking questions and looking for advice. Throughout the year, the staff was kept busy. Mrs. Steger finds out that being a guidance counselor takes a lot of hard manual labor; like typing. What ' s this? Mrs. Hall is finally having her very first Big Mac attack after a long day ' s work at the guidance office. Mr. Meyer often uses eye contact to intrigue his students. Library: Where Silence Reigns It was sometimes necessary for Sister Mary Jane to search out lost and forgotten books. These students found the library a very quiet and relaxing place to work in. During the ' 80- ' 81 school year, the Keanan Media Center proved to be a great assistance to many students, whether researching a paper or just getting away from it all. Sr. Mary Jane and Mrs. Kemp helped many students who were unfamiliar with the library. The library also stored all of the audio-visual equipment throughout the year. Library 51 Religion: A Part Of The Second World Gathering his class for a picture, Mr. Whalen demonstrates that we should all have i neighborly love for one another. Togetherness is often found in religion class as Mike Dahle and Mike Sprau demonstrate. Marty Secrest and Dino Orsine have apparently taken Sister Virginia ' s lecture about caring for your neighbor to heart! Religion usually has a calming effect on people, but it seems to have put Tammy VanAUen to sleep! The Religion Department, headed by Father Sullivan, strives to direct each student into the right path of our faith. The freshmen study Old and New Testament. The following ear they will learn about the history of Mass and Sacraments. As sopho- mores they also learn Christian Mo- rality. Juniors are taught about the different cultures of the world in World Religions, and they also study the Teachings of Christ. Seniors learn about Social Issues and the true facts of Marriage. The religion program at B.D. is well rounded to give students knowledge of the many aspects of faith. 52 Academics % I Miss Maciejewski doesn ' t seem too impressed with Phil Potoski ' s report. Communicating In Perfect English Are these students daydreaming or contemplating the strong words of Rick Reifenberg. College prep students study hard as they listen carefully to Ms. Jackson. These seniors find that Greek literature is sometimes amusing. While posing for the camera, Mr. Poston is a model teacher. The English department continued with their hard work to perfect all levels of the language. The freshmen were taught all about grammar in or- der to speak and write correctly. Sophomores studied American lit- erature and also read about the scar- let letter. These students also had the chance to learn about the mass medias and practice their speech. Ju- niors learned about English litera- ture and also read some books on their own. The seniors were occupied with a variety of classes ranging from world literature to the infamous col- lege prep course. The English de- partment kept the Saints busy and learning this year. 54 Academics Liz Miller and Mike O ' Boyle discover that World Lit isn ' t as difficult as everyone had told them last year. Problems Solved Mr. Thompson teaches his class the far-reaching effects of the standard yard stick. Gladly, Mrs. Goehring poses for a picture before attempting to solve this difficult quadratic equation. As usual, things in the Math depart- ment added up. Incoming freshmen were terrified by algebra while the sophomores struggled with geometry and polygo ns. Some juniors were caught up in algebra II and trig while others preferred plain algebra. Some seniors with masochistic tendicies at- tempted the pre-cal courses while others pledged their allegience to functions of trig. All in all, there was a course for every test. Much thought and concentration goes into the solution of a math problem, as one student demonstrates. It seems that this class just received their tests back. Are the results that laughable, Norb? 56 Academics While trying to prove two triangles congruent, these two sophomores go around i circles. George Lowrv appeals to someone on the outside to take him away from algehra. ' I ' m not late, the bell rang early! insists David Dugan. These students look baffled. They probably just finished another mind-bending math test. Academics 57 Past Present . . . Future Will the craziness never end!!!?? It always seemed that the history teachers were going beyond the call of duty to make their point. The His- tory Dept, headed by Mr. Ray, man- aged to complete another successful (if unusual) year. Mr. Tone, Mr. Koester, Mr. Scudder, Mr. Johns, and Mr. Ray combined to make the leaders of history. It looks like Gary Emerick isn ' t too thrilled with history or Showing imagination, Tim Krouse uses a deck of cards to demonstrate the heirarchy of a monarchy, the photographer. Some are doomed to remain anonymous in this history book. Whatever Mr. Johns is saying is having a tremendous effect on the front row. 58 Academics Shelly Nycum becomes very involved in history class These students seem anxious to break out and repeat history. Repeating past history, Yvonne Clemens and Amy Doboz look for someone they kn Academics 59 Science: Experimental Method Standing near his project, Mike Sasko looks to Mrs. Glomam for approval. This year, as in the past, the science department of Bishop Dwenger has helped many a student learn the ba- sics of biology, chemistry, and earth science. Advanced classes such as ad- vanced chemistry, advanced biology, and anatomy and physiology prepare students for specialized fields in medicine and science. y? Mr. Loney seems to have his class in line. The famous saying vini, vidi, vici pops into Terry Winklejohn ' s head as he struggles through his assignment. These students heads are starting to nod-but not in agreement!!! Nominative plural, third declension, and the genative case are just a few of the terms you ' ll learn while studying a foreign language. Students learned grammar, culture, and conversation. The advanced courses delved into the history and culture of their re- spective languages. Aiding the stu- dents in their conversation skills was the language lab where they could practice speaking and listening. Many clubs formed around the lan- guages and many class parties were celebrated. 62 Academics Business: Preparing For The Future In class, Terry Derloshon learned the basics of mechanical drawing. Brian Hartman perfected his new technique this year: typing with no hands!! Even after hours of practice, Ellen Zwierko finds that she still can ' t read her own shorthand. In the Business Department there are several talented teachers doing their best to help their students to become skilled. These teachers are: Mrs. Flowers, Mr. Krouse, and Mr. Ryan. A variety of classes are offered to better prepare students for the fu- ture. Typing classes are for both the experienced and the inexperienced and are centered on perfection. Peo- ple also learn a lot about symbols in shorthand classes. Accounting classes areoffered for anyone who would like a greater knowledge in numbers and figures. All classes pre- pare for jobs in our later lives. Academics 63 Creative Fingers Contribute To The Arts Don ' t worry, Becky Van Allen, burning cookies isn ' t the end of the world!! Bebbie Pelkington looks on as Nicole Robbins completes her work of art. Here at Bishop Dwenger, the talents of many were discovered. The Art Depart- ment, headed by Mrs. Ann Case, pro- vided us with many surprised this year. The Art Department was kept busy with many projects including decorat- ing the windows at Christmas, making the many banners used in mass, and supplying beautiful works of art in the showcase. The Home Economics de- partment, headed by the fearless Mrs. B. Bachman, was also busy this year helping make the school complete. One of the intricacies involved in the art of sewing is not sewing one ' s fingers to the material. Amy Miller instructs Marcia Schrein and Mary .Jordan in the art of interior showcase decorating. 64 Academics Music Department: In Tune With The School These B.D. students sing in a scene from the musical Lend an Ear. ' This group of B.D. students made Mass even more enjoyable with their musical accompaniment and singing. The Bishop Dwenger Music depart- ment may not be the biggest depart- ment but it is definately the most talented. Under the directions of Mrs. Jehl and Mrs. Levy the music department has put on many fantas- tic concerts. These two ladies spent a lot of time making music a part of the life of Bishop Dwenger. The mu- sic department contributed their ser- vices in many ways such as: football and basketball games, school Masses and many others activities. Many people enjoyed the music during the many concerts the band performed at. During the football season Ernie Evans enjoys marching and playing iZBHSjj fflj the trombone. Physical Ed: Lots 0 ' Fun! Cautiously, Mike Gehl approaches Chau Nguyen to ask for the next square dance. After Chau gratiously accepts, Mike wisks her around the dance fl Maureen Jehl finds that hitting the birdie isn ' t as easy as it appeared to be. Many freshmen learned the basics this year of physical health in gym class. Sophomores in health and safety were taught first aid and were given general knowledge of various illnesses and body functions. Mr. Bob Herber began and advanced physical education class using the theory of weight training. This class became popular since it was held during the lunch periods. 66 Academics Busy Bodies As usual, Louie is busy at work keeping our schc clean and together. Mrs. Ashby creates a key component to the Dwenger lunch: peanut butter sandwiches!! It seems that Mr. Karst and Mr. Silk are proud of a job well done. Barbara Barrand demonstrates her wonderful cake decorating abilities. It is a rare, wonderful moment that finds Mrs. Basset standing still during a Dwenger lunch period. To satisfy our hungry, overworked bodies, the cafeteria staff nourish- ment at each lunch period. The cafe- teria staff starts early in the morning and stays til the late afternoon to make good lunches and to clean up the mess hungry Saints left behind. The maintenance department spends long hours keeping our school looking like a place for dwelling Saints. Without their hard work and dedication B.D. would not be the same. We are proud of, and appreci- ate the fine jobs our cafe-eria and maintenance departments do for us and for the school. y y - z y y - z y © Z y . t : i Sports 69 V.B. This isn ' t an easy job and it requires the assistance of many dedicated and hard working people. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to the entire yearbook staff and to all who have made the production of this book pos sible. We ' d also like to send out our gratitude to a few very special people who had a tremendous impact on this yearbook ' s production. Mrs. Cornell was absolutely fantastic about the whole thing. She spent her time getting everything together and encouraging us to get what needed to be done finished. She was helpful in reminding us about deadlines (and especially the deadlines we missed.). She was good at assuring us that our mistakes were ones that didn ' t make big problems. Mrs. Cornell was great at calling the plant to get our page 86 to end up page 87, and to fix other mistakes of this type. Besided always fixing our problems, she was just super all around. Thanks for always coming through when we needed you to! A big thanks goes to Watters Studio, who shot all our pictures and was really good about getting additional prints made in a hurry. Mike Kleber assisted us by coming out to the school time after time to take various pictures whenever needed. Jim Arthur, our yearbook representative was always willing to give his support and aid. Finally, we ' d like to thank those who stayed after school was out to help finish up the book. Jenny Koch, Sue Niccum, Patty Hudak, Carolyn Bookmyer, and Debbie Carteaux were a big help in the end work. Without them we would have been further behind than ever. We appreciate the work all these people have done, as well as the work done by all of those we ' ve failed to mention. THANKS to all who helped make this yearbook all it is!!!!!
