We shared the optimism that each new school year brings to classes, assemblies and to sports competitions. The joy of vic- tories and the thrills of individual achievements gave us pride in each other and in our school. The year also brought to the school a unity caused by the deep concern we felt for some of our members. We were witnesses to a tremendous dis- play in spiritual and physical courage in the face of pain and suffering and eventual death. Bob Wehrly Brought 1100 souls closer together, not by beating a martial drum or broadcasting a revolutionary appeal, but by simply suffering, inspiring by his quiet courage an entire school, to discover in itself its own Christian- ity. The experiences affected us differ- ently, but we all have grown, we have all progressed on our road to matur- ity. Fly Like An Eagle 2 OPENING ■■M ▼%JJ B| i ) HO Li fli w mA H 1 v 3 Bk. ■■. Through the strength of our leaders, Bishop Dwenger once again had an effective administration this year. The leadership provided by the ad- ministration helped to set the tone for everyone else at Dwenger. Father Edward Krason served as principal for the fourteenth year. He was assisted by Sister Denis Wort- man and Mr. Joseph Woods. Mrs. Pat Gentile took over the responsibilities of Dean of Women from Sister Denis, so that she could further assist Father Krason. As Dean of Men, Mr. Larry Bartolameolli worked with Mrs. Gen- tile to aid the students with their problems. Mr. Dick Krouse contri- buted to the administration by acting as Athletic Director and Business Manager. Father Krason also re- ceived assistance from his new secre- tary, Sister Pauline. Sr. Denis takes a minute for a picture, then continues with her class. Is Mr. Woods giving secret hand signals, or is he looking for a ride? 10 ACADEMICS Mrs. Gentile and Mrs. Sciarini seem to have worked this problem out to a happy conclusion. Mr. Bart, why aren ' you busy? Aren ' t there any Dwenger men who need haircuts? Father Krason, at a pep session, inspires his saints to do their best. Mr. Krouse manages to teach an Accovmting class in addition to his duties as athletic director. ACADEMICS n Guidance — Help Along The Way Qh d Dcp Although loaded down with work, Miss Arata can keep on smiling. Father Holt waits patiently for a visit from Mr. Crall ' s lost sheep . The ladies in the office take time out of their busy day to celebrate Mrs. Gentile ' s birthday. The Guidance Department proved to be an essential part of Bishop Dwenger through the help and coo- peration of its staff members. Father John Pfister, director, together with Father Phil Suehr, performed the many duties associated with the de- partment. The loss of Miss Cathy Arata in December greatly affected the councilors, increasing their re- sponsibilities. The work, neverthe- less, was accomplished. The office personnel were willing to help anyone in need. They provided the necessary information, along with a smile, to keep the administration running smoothly. Cafeteria And Maintenance — Backbone Of Dwenger Can he do it? Dan Palermo attempts to make quick work of his sandwich by devouring it in one bite. The cafeteria and maintenance staffs proved to be very important at Bish- op Dwenger. Throughout the year their aid was greatly needed and will- ingly given. The cafeteria workers showed their cooking abilities through the prepara- tion of the food. Their talents made it possible to feed the many students. To the maintenance men no job was too large. Anything that needed do- ing, from fixing jammed lockers to keeping the school spotless, was done with a smile. If t hey could not solve a problem, they at least gave it a good try. Standing left to right aie Barbara Barrand, Sandy Garrison, Jean Bierbaum, Sis Boniface, Judy Malinowski and Helen Bassett. Here we see an excellent demonstration of efHcient assembly-line technique. Teachers Stress Student Individuality Mr. Dan Loney Mr. Gary Adang Sr. Theresa Marie Dulls Spreading the Word takes much dedication, and Dwenger has cap- tured that dedication in the teachers of the ReUgion Department. Mr. Doug Pryor and Mr. Vincent Murray, the n ew members of the staff, joined with the rest of the ReUgion Depart- ment in spreading the word through class studies, special projects, and chapel visits. Mike looks around in disbelief at Mr. Loney ' s last statement in Social Bishop Dwenger ' s Thinker . There ' s nothing like a Good Book to get you interested in Religion class — is there Kent? 18 ACADEMICS Spreading The Word Mr. Adang has no trouble getting his students to swallow what he teaches. This unsuspecting Sophomore demonstrates the most important part of Religion class — meditation? Mrs. Raison always seems to be listening, even though she ' s really Dr. Reily and Jim Steigmeyer seem as interested as Shelley Bashara Is in her catching up on her beauty rest. essay. English: Exploring Our World Many English courses were offered this year, with general literature re- quired for all students. Seniors were taught College Prep Writing by Miss Jackson and Literary Analysis by Mr. Tierney. Dr. Rielly, the only new member of the English staff, instruct- ed News Media. Mrs. Johnston was head of the Department, and other teachers included Mrs. Raison, Mrs. Stropke, Mrs. Kaltenmark and Mrs. Barnes. Kathy Faylor, Jerry Voors, Linda Goodman, Debbie Chamness, and Sandy Gladieux bring back the good old days of the middle ages for American Lit class. 20 ACADEMICS Joe Bonahoom puts an end to the ragged edges on an English Mrs. Johnston willingly lends a hand to her Freshmen English dasses. paper. ACADEMICS 21 Math — A Graphic Pleasure Chalk in hand, calculators by their side this year ' s Math Department strove to bring the understanding of numbers to their students. With the cry of Front row to the board, the Math teachers covered everything from polynomials to Newton ' s third law. Sr. Renee, a newcomer, taught Sen- iors Analytic Geometry and Analysis of Functions. Sr. Denis and Dr. Ruiz taught Freshmen Algebra while Mrs. Hinkle and Mr. Meyer made shapes a little clearer to their Sophomore Ge- ometry classes. Mr. Crall taught Ele- mentary Functions. Trig, and Alge- bra and Trig. All these teachers combined to make Math both fun and interesting to their students. And even if they don ' t know how to integrate dx into dy, at least they can hold the chalk so it doesn ' t screech on the board. Joe Bonahoom is obviously thinking of something better than Algebra and Trig. Tom, Mr. Crall ' s at the front of the room. Dr. Ruiz can still smile after working all these Algebra problems on the board. 22 ACA Larry Siegel clearly understands all factors involved in Math class Are these Geometry shapes better than Farrah Fawcett ' s? History: Antics With The Ancients Joe Motherwell argues with Mr. Ray, who has confiscated what he consid- ers contraband in his room, a comb. As everyone knows, history, or the develop- ment of man over the centuries, plays an im- portant role in today ' s society. This years So- cial Studies department endeavored to illus- trate this role. Headed by Mr. Francis Ray, along with Mr. Bart, Mr. Herber, Mr. Koester and Mr. Tone, the Social Studies department helped to bring a new understanding of history to their students. With such courses as World History, U.S. History, Government, Econom- ics, and World Geography there was some- thing for everyone. Complete with costumes and equipment, the teachers brought the past to life and the pre- sent to the classroom. And with this combina- tion, plus a lot of discipline, demonstrations, laughter and bad jokes, the teachers succeed- ed in making better citizens of all their stu- dents. Is it dead yet? Alan Nichter shows Mr. Koester his solution to the energy crisis by insulating the wall with newspaper. 24 ACADEMICS This is Germany, isn ' t it Mr. Bart? Mr. Herber gives his class a real live demonstration of guerilla warfare. - -. Brian Alberding demonstrates a philosophy that all the History teachers believe in. Healthy bodies make healthy minds. Government is so easy, Jeanne can do it with her eyes closed. It appears that Mr. Tone is discussing something serious with his usually lively class, either that or it ' s Monday morning. ACADEMICS 25 Suzie, Marijo and Carol ponder Mrs. Gloman ' s easier questions. l7 1 1 ' -IJ ' Tom Schall is amused as he studies for one of Mr. Colvin ' s Earth Science tests. Mrs. Gloman ' s classes learn from Mr. Pat Bolman of the joys and frustrations encountered in conservation work. Two new members joined the staff of the Bishop Dwenger Science Depart- ment. Sr. Renee, along wth her duties in the Math Department, assisted Mr. Colvin in Chemistry. Mr. Loney, a new face to the Science Depart- ment, but not to B.D. aided Sr. The- resa Marie and Mr. Walker, in teach- ing one sophomore biology class. Mrs. Gloman, head of the department, ini- tiated the first Science Club in the school — The Scientific Saints. Var- ious speakers and projects added to the curriculum of the year. Cheryl Branning finds out that setting a broken arm is not as easy as it looks. By the expression on Jim ' s face, it seems apparent that Murphy ' s laws are still in existance. 26 ACADEMICS Julie prepares a Sowers slide. Please don ' t change the channel Carol; we want to watch The Mickey Mouse Club. Scientific Saints Search For Answers r i - s; ' iiimay; nM Tango or Fox Trot? ' Steve Tippmann, assisted by Mike Voigt and Mark Parsons appear to be the new mad scientists at Dwenger. Rhonda Roy seems to be very pleased with her results in Anatomy. Language Opens New Worlds The Bishop Dwenger language depart- ment was joined by one new face this year. Mrs. Simmons, head of the depart- ment, welcomed Mrs. Reily to the lan- guage staff. Mrs. Teusch, Mr. Tierney and Mr. Weber instructed students not only in the Spanish language but also in the culture. Mr. Weber and his German students, along with the other language classes, frequently took advantage of the expanding language lab. When the bell rings even Mr. Tierney is over-anxious to get out of class. Just a minute — Nancy it ' s for you. These first year German students learn some of the heritage through the songs. With the help of Mrs. Teusch, these Spanish students delve into one of Peggy Offerle, Terry Schuster, and Kathy Rownd realize that Ger- Spain ' s great cities. many hasn ' t changed over the last year. 28 ACADEMICS k Take LATI J Now Avoid the Rush Later! ' ii yftSiMlt£msai3SSim; Pat LaPlante and Terri Long discuss the finer points of Latin 3. These French students dream of the day that they will travel to Paris. ACADEMICS 29 Mr. Ryan, Mr. Krouse, and Mrs. Flowers, working together in the Business Department, offered a vari- ety of courses designed to aid stu- dents in the development of clerical skills. These included Personal Typ- ing, Typing I, Shorthand I II and Notehand, as well as Office Practice. For those students more adept with figures. Accounting and Bookkeeping were available. Working together, the Business staff, headed by Mr. Ryan, conditioned in- experienced students to be typists, bookkeepers and business personnel, for future jobs. Wait until your a little older, I ' ll give you something better in a bottle. ' Business: Preparation For Life Is accounting really as interesting as it seems to Judy Feichter and Sandy Gladieux? Mrs. Flowers, newest member of the business staff, pre- pares her class for better jobs in the future. 30 ACADEMICS Terri Freehill and Chris Braun find out everything about being married except the honeymoon. ' ' Mr. Ryan points out to Tamey Arney her finesse in the art of making mistakes. Jeanne Alter knows how to make shorthand symbols; the question is how to read them. Mr Ryan ' s typing class delves into the possibilities of typing quickly, without getting their fingers stuck between the keys. ACADEMICS 31 i Mike Ray is learning to respect the great Persian rug makers of the Far East. Concentration, dedication, and elaboration produce the quality works of art that we at Dwenger have come to admire. Deb Rissing shows what happens when you become too involved in your art. Dave Porter proves that even though injured, you can ' t keep a good artist down. These Freshmen show off the new Dwenger dress shirt — but will Fr. Krason approve? Kim McDonald shows the proper technique and amount of concentration needed for Straight lines are one of the more difficult feats conquered in sculpting. Mechanical Drawing. Art Students Develop Their Talents The creative abilities of the students in the Art Department are seen in the variety of techniques and styles of ex- pression. Future artists of Dwenger have the opportunity to develop their talent in arts and crafts of their great- est interest. Meanwhile, in the Mehcanical Draw- ing department, beginning students learned the basic concepts of indus- trial drawing, coding, and design. More advanced students learned to deal with more specialized and diffi- cult areas of Architectural drawing and planning, as well as studying building codes. Penny, I ' m not kidding. Mass DOES start in 15 minutes! ACADEMICS 33 Students Gain Experience In The Domestic Arts. Steve Locke and Linda Kucharski learn that co-operation in the kitchen may not be the neatest way to cook, but it is one of the most enjoyable. Mrs. Bachman, head of the Home Ec Department, demonstrates the correct way to carve a turkey. Though it may appear Theresa Dimpke is taking a second Shelly Silk must be an excellent cook as she obviously helping, she ' s actually putting back her first. enjoys eating her creations. 34 ACADEMICS Home Ec classes gave B.D. students a chance to gain valuable experience in the domestic arts. The students not only learned how to bake cakes and other goodies, but also how to plan well balanced meals. In sewing classes, students progressed from a simple apron to a jacket or blazer. Although females dominated most of the Home Ec classes, a few courageous males tried their hands at cooking and sewing in the Chef and Tailoring classes. Perhaps someday, the males will find the skills devel- oped in the classes invaluable. Could Mrs. Bachman be wondering what some stu- Michele Wilkinson carefully takes homemade bread out of the oven, dent is attempting to make, or is this just a case of the Monday morning blahs? 1974923 Maybe Steve Weingartner and Terry Schlund can tell us ... is it more fun making a taco, or eating one? ACADEMICS 35 ' H ifc .gJfeJ ,. Wow! Look at those muscles! No, not Greg ' s — Mr. Minch ' s! Lisa Groves looks on with awe as Viv Rosswurm smashes the volleyball over the net. The P.E. students found many activi- ties to keep them busy. The girls uti- lized the tumbling mats, uneven par- allel bars, balance beam and trampo- line to keep in shape, while the boy ' s P.E. classes consisted of such activi- ties as basketball, volleyball, football, soccer and wrestling. Both boys and girls gym classes learned the fine art of square dancing. They also played volleyball together. Due to the determined leadership of Miss MacCartney and Mr. Minch the gym classes taught sportsmanship and competiveness, yet they were en- joyable for all students. Coach, are you sure Bill Walton started this way? 36 ACADEMICS P.E. Builds Character And Co-ordination My sweat socks are killing me! Besides knowing how to play an instrument, they learned corp style marching with rifles and flags. In addition to getting together on their own to practice, they also attended Smith Walbridge Twirling Camp last summer to get ideas for new twirling routines. Later on in the summer they went to Tri-State with the band to prac- tice playing their instruments and also to practice their new rifle and flag routines. Dwenger Sings Out l Are these the Levys? To add extra sparkle to their half- time routines, the girls all pitched in and raised the money, through a garage sale and car wash, for new uniforms and props. Pom- pon is an all year activity: in the sum- mer the girls go to camp for practice and to learn new routines. Our girls went to camp at Ball State for four days. They brought home the Super Team trophy and over sixty blue rib- bons. This accomplishment along with their enthusiastic support of our varsity teams throughout the year de- serves our thanks and appreciation. The nuns sponsored a party at the convent before the Prom. The Prom was held at the Indiana-Purdue Ballroom and lasted from 9:00 to 12:00. Music was provided by the Dick Brown Orchestra. The highlight of the even- ing was the crowning of Barb Jehl as queen by Eric Braun, Class President. Everyone had a good time while slow dancing in formals and tuxes. The After-Prom was held at Ceruti ' s Hall and lasted from 1:00 to 4:00. Changing into less formal clothing and dancing to the music of Sheba lent an exciting atmosphere to a very memorable evening. Prom Court: Sheila Clemens, Mike Hipskind; Elaine Neimiann, Jay Gehl; Sue Okleshen, Ed Ulshafer; Steve Reifenberg, Ellen Crowe; Jeff Collins, Barb Jehl; Terri Brauchla, Kerry Ryan; Chris Smith, Chris Koehl. Prom Queen Barb Jehl and her date Jeff CoUins. The chaperones also had a wonderful evening watching the dancing, listening to the music, and socializing together. Bjorn Pedersen and Kathi Kahn really swing to the beat of this song. Suzie Voors and escort make their way down the many flights of stairs as they leave the Prom. Baccalaureate — Graduation This year B.D. held it ' s eleventh an- nual Commencement ceremonies. The Baccalaureate Banquet held on May 20 gave recognition to the stu- dents of the Class of ' 77. Valedictori- an Fran Perugini and Salutatorian Sue Helton spoke to the graduates after a delicious dinner. Awards and scholarsips were presented to out- standing individuals of the Senior Class. The Class officers then pre- sented the school with a gift from the Senior Class - a statue of Bishop Jo- seph Dwenger sculpted by Hector Garcia. The Graduation Ceremony was held on May 27 in the school gym. The Mass was concelebrated by Bishop McManus and priests from the feeder p£u-ishes. The long-awaited diplomas were handed out by the Bishop after the homily. s Junior Class Officers and Moderators. Mr Weber, Moderator. Perhaps for the first time one felt the unity among the stu- dents, or the enthusiasm and support extended to the football team. Or as a senior, one may have been saddened at the thought of a last Homecoming as a student, or have been relieved at homework. Maybe as one thinks back, he will remember the happiness of winning the game or just the fun shared with friends. Someday we may look back and say . . . The thrills came in defeating tenth ranked Elmhurst and the Redskins of North Side, but the agony came in losing to South Bend Washington, Snider, and of course that bewitched team from the south side of the city, Bishop Luers. This year the Saints were slated to be one of the best teams in the city, but it seemed that the team just couldn ' t put it together when the occasion arose. Our team was led by a super group of seniors and was backed up by a talented group of juniors and underclassmen. Bishop Dwenger was represented in the All-North selection with seven players, and in the All-City selection with four players, Jeff Moeller, Mike Sciarini, Fred Franke and Mike Weis- sert. Dwenger was also represented by two outstanding athletes, Jim Brown and John Skip McKenna, who were ranked second and third in the SAC conference in points scored. The coaching staff, Mr. Bart, Mr. Tone and Mr. Herber, did a great job. They devoted a tremendous amount of time and effort this year so that our athletes could have the best train- ing facilities around. Fr. Pfister also played an important role, both spiri- tually and physically, in backing the team members. Our Saints were well supported with excellent cheer- leaders, a fine band and dedicated and devoted fans. Even though the team did not finish as champions they will always be champions in the minds of the Dwenger students and fans. Fr. The Dwenger cross country team es- tablished itself as one of the finest groups of high school harriers in Northeastern Indiana. Led by cap- tain Mark Brosmer and a fine group of upperclassmen, the Saints rolled up a 12-5 record. The team placed fifth at the tough Manchester Invita- tional, and finished third in the Sum- mit Athletic Conference. The Saints followed with a strong second place sectional finish, led by junior Greg Orman who placed sixth, Joe Lassen was eleventh, and sophomore John Nowlan twelfth. The team qualified for regional competition in which Dwenger placed seventh; again led by Orman who was fourteenth individ- ually. The SAC finish was the best for Dwenger since 1969. The sectional and regional accomplishments were the teams best ever. Early in their season, the team expertly captured the Adams Central Tourney. The Saints sent twelve wrestlers to the Sectionals, more than any other team in the area, and they came away placing seven men into the Regionals. The team is losing many good men as the Seniors graduate, but with backups like Alex Palermo and Fred Gabet, who beat their previously undefeated oppo- nents in the tourney, the team looks pretty good for next year. The high point of the season came during Sectionals when the team scored a last-second basket to defeat Carroll, bringing the Saints to the final game. Unfortunately they were defeated by a strong Wayne team. The Saints were led by high-scoring Kevin Wagner who was named to the All-SAC team for the second year, while Jeff Maxwell received honor- able mention. Chris Kelly was named to the All- Sectional team for his ex- ceptional playing in the game against Carroll. Under the Fine leadership and pro- fessional expertise of our dedicated coach Dandy Don Ryan, the Saints golf team won its second straight SAC title. With the leadership of Jeff the Hacker Maxwell and the dy- namic duo of the two Houlihan broth- ers, Junior Jim and Sophomore Pat, the team seemed to have a good shot at the city title from the beginning of the season. As the season progressed, this predic- tion proved to be well founded as demonstrated by Senior Hacker Maxwell who placed first in the sec- tional individual scoring. Even though Maxwell and four other Vet- eran Seniors are leaving the team, with back-ups like the Houlihans re- turning next year, the third straight city title looks pretty good. MOMPER INSULATION CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 77 FROM HAMILTON ELECTRIC 743-9869 June 1977 After two years of serving as co-editors of the Aureate, we now realize that working as a team is the only way. There are many individuals to whom we are grateful. We want to point out the undying efforts of a few outstanding people. First, there ' s the everlasting efforts of our two moderators, Mrs. Teusch and Mrs. Brown. Their willingness to help and patient understanding were always around. In addition, we ' d like to give special thanks to our professional photographer who never refused one of our last minute calls for pictures. We were also blessed by wonderful student photographers. Senior Mike Litch ' s contributions were always welcomed in our moments of need. To the special group of year bookers who always gave their best we say thank you. They made working on the Aureate memorable and enjoyable. The Editors ADS 183 Senior Moods 7 1.84 CLOSING L I CLOSING 185 JOST3MS COM NY Dwenger . . . God ' s Gift To Us And Others
