The Bishop Dunne Community is fortunate to have such a person. There is a very spe- cial teacher at Bishop Dunne High School who has dedicated herself to our community for the past.ten years. She possesses a rare quality which enables her to give fully of herself to her students and their needs. She is respected and admired, not only by the student body, but by the entire Dunne Community. In appreciation for her endless dedication, her tireless service, her commitment to the goals of Bishop Dunne High School, and for the friendship she has shared with so many of us, we proudly dedicate the 1977 Mitre to Mrs. Mary Jane Crissey. an ay bite? dwt SW ii Oe e Pe =r: To] 9 DY: ee AM (eM =T-TelTalaliare B =i-Vlale Mm =re)aal Again, ag eee Growing a Little Older, But Growing a Little Wiser. ive By. EDDIE WATTLEY STUDENT COUNCIL Building bridges'' was the goal of 4 the Student Council this past year. In — print it looks prosaic, a cliche that fits easily into speeches and onto posters. But the alternative is to build walls and to become isolated. With a new administration - not just new people, but a new form and a new style - directing Bishop Dunne, the Student Council had to forge new directions, articulate student voices for the ''front office,'' and carry ‘'the word back to the students. - Operating in transition, the Council still had the traditional activities to maintain: pep rallies, Homecoming, dances, etc., even while it was asked to serve the administration in an advi- sory capacity. ''Goals for Dallas, ' class activities, assisting with the speech tournament, Family Fair, and the Lenten assemblies helped to form the unity among all of us. The bridges that were built will survive to serve succeeding classes at Bishop Dunne : eee a High School. The purpose of wearing the beanie is to promote class unity among the freshmen. Beanies are to be worn by the students dur- ing school hours and at all activities spon- sored by the school. For the first time, the beanies were distributed to the freshman class during a special assembly designated for this purpose. Each freshman was called by name to come to the stage and person- ally receive a beanie from either Randy Bacon or Maggie McCauley. The freshman class wore their beanies until Judgment Day. _ JUDGMENT DAY Judgment Day is the day that every freshman fears in his heart. On this day all freshmen who have broken the ''Beanie Laws'' are punished. Punishment can be anything within reason. This year the seniors of '77 devised a ''Roast'' for the freshman offenders. Many celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe'' Heitzman and ‘Jimmy Car- ter'' Tillotson managed to attend and participate in this event. HOMECOMING Homecoming weekend was enjoyed by all. As usual it was a great success. The Fal- con football team contributed to this success by their victory over the Mansfield Tigers with a score of 23 to 8. The pre-game activities included the introduction of the homecoming court and the crowning of the queen, Maggie McCauley. The spirit and excitement was shown by the crowd, signs, and bal- loons. The homecoming dance was held the following night at the Dupont Plaza from 8:00 to 12:00 p.m. Short Change was the group that got things going. The faculty and par- ents added to the festive events. Along with the enter- tainment, the food and refreshments helped to make the evening a big success. There was no other word for the dance except great. The homecoming court consisted of the following seniors: Maggie McCauley, Susan Hobson, Paddy Schram, and Twyla Walther. Father Albert Cuschieri, chaplain of Bishop Dunne High School, was the celebrant for this occasion. During the offertory students from the various clubs and organiza- tions presented symbolic gifts. Music for the Mass was provided by the Bishop Dunne Concert Band under the direction of Mr. Bob Parsons and the guitar group under the direction of Mr. Pat Muscan- ere. The spiritual experience of this Mass developed within each of us a feeling of Christian unity within the Dunne Community. NHS INDUCTION CEREMONY Students are chosen for NHS on the basis of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Schol- arship requirements are based upon the student's classification. A senior must have an overall average of 3.3 for three previous years; a junior, a 3.5 average in the ninth and tenth grades; a soph- omore, a 3.7 average during the freshman year. Members must maintain a 3.1 average in order to remain in the society. Service is judged by receiving points for the school organizations to which the student belongs and the offices they hold. Any outside and volunteer organizations in which they hold membership are also considered. Leadership and character is determined by a questionnaire submitted to the teachers. Ques- tions about leadership deal with a student's leadership qualities. Character is determined by ques- tions concerning the student's honesty, poise, courtesy, enthu- siam, and initiative. - Martha Lee LOWER RIGHT: Honorary members for this year were Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Cris- sey. bi . 4 2 Pai | ; 2) ‘ i The first annual NHS banquet was held December 1, 1976, at Wyatt's Cafeteria in Oak Cliff. Gece? £ THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1977 Oe et ee SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES: Maggie McCauley, Julie Kendro, Cindy Borbon, Marilu Magana, and Frank Bernard. . Being a senior was a time for exciting new experiences and many responsibilities. Very soon after the start of the year, one could feel the unity, togetherness, and desire for accom- plishment that set us apart from any other senior class that graduated from Bishop Dunne High School. We followed the hallowed traditions and started new ones as we became involved in school activities. The uniqueness of our class was amplified by our many friendships with teachers and underclassmen, our active school spirit, and our steady leadership. As our senior year came to a close, we the senior class of 1977, appreciated the wonderful Memories and educational experiences that Bishop Dunne provided for us. It is always sad to have to leave something that has become so much a part of you, but all of us must part one day and go our separate ways. Graduating meant leaving our friends and school to face the true world. Although graduat- ing seemed to be an end, it was also a new beginning. As we approached the real world, we saw that all of our pains of high school were teally beautiful memories that will be cherished ‘nd remembered throughout our lives. Commitment was the theme of the retreat. The men were divided into groups with members of the faculty as a part of each group. The groups allowed for much expres- sion mentally and physically as well as spir- itually. In the serenity of the Athens Retreat House, time was given to search for com- mitment in all forms, along with time to play football, throw frisbees, work and meditate, and in general, search for one's inner self. Most of the groups were composed of young men who were not really familiar with each other, thereby giving them an Opportunity to make new acquaintances, along with reaching an understanding of how these new friends felt about certain things. Under the leadership of the theology, guidance, and athletic departments, along with the principal, Mr. Jerome T. McGowan, the seniors were able to achieve a new understanding of what it means to be committed to self and others. - Paul Wood SENIOR GIRLS’ RETREAT The Senior Girls' Retreat proved to be not only three days of fun, hg ! Y 2 sleepless nights, and good food, ind | te but also a time of reflection about cen we ae our lives and sharing our thoughts : : “3 with one another. We all became very close, not only to each other, but to the fac- ulty members who participated in our retreat. We came to know each of them as friends, not just teachers or administrative person- nel. The theme of our retreat, which was held on November 2, 3, and 4 in Athens, Texas, was commit- ment. The class of '77 committed itself to the goals of the Bishop Dunne Community, their fami- lies, and most of all to their dreams for the future. Hopefully, we will all remember to dream the impossible dream. - Valerie Manning SENIOR PROM The Terrace Room of the Fairmont Hotel was the scene for the 1977 Senior Prom. The music was provided by Uncle's Rainbow. Mark Smith, Master of Ceremonies, intro- duced the senior favorites, as well as the presidents of the various clubs and organiza- tions in the traditional Grand March. The prom was one of the highlights of the senior activities. 224 The faculty also enjoyed the good music. ea Monica Harkenrider and her escort Armand K bare re = “Eten. eS Trawick.. BACCALAUREATE MASS The Baccalaureate Mass was held on May 15, 1977, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. The Mass was a joyous celebration with Father Dan Clayton as celebrant. The seniors took part in the sing- ing, readings, and spoken inten- tions. Family, friends, and fac- ulty members also shared in this occasion.
