DEDICATIGN In Loving Memory of His Excellency Bishop Joseph A. Burke, DD Q13 LL IM Q -2 H' 73'f'+ .4 ...qu I' l 9' ' Q Coat of Arms of Bishop Burke Vive esus Since the founding of Bishop Duffy High School in 1946, the devout spirit of St. Francis de Sales has been the guide by which the Oblates have strived to de- velop Christ-like men. The priests at Duffy, through humble devotion and per- severance, have sought to instill in the students the virtues of our patron saint. The manifestations of St. Francis' teach- ings are witnessed in all activities at Duffy, both in and out of the classroom. The sincere aim of the Oblates is to pre- pare us mentally, spiritually, physically and socially for the long road of life which lies ahead. The assimilation and de- velopment of the virtues of St. Francis de Sales will prove invaluable in attain- ing man's ultimate goal-eternal union with his Creator. f 5 His Holiness Pope John XXIII His Excellency Bishop Leo R. SPORTS :Fl - -- FGCTBALL Bishop DuEy's halfback Mike Vio- lante, tackle Bob McNamee and end Jim Simpson were selected to the 'drst team all-league by the Buffalo Evening News and also honored as all-city by the Ni- agara Falls Gazette. Violante led the league in yards rush- ing and in total points scored, carrying the ball 134 times for 828 yards and a 6.1 yds. per carry average. McNamee played brilliantly on of- fense as the 1eague's best tackle and was no less valuable as a defensive middle guard. Simpson deserved his position on the all-league team due to his exceptional blocking and splendid inspiration to the rest of the team. The Niagara Falls Gazette also chose Chuck Marino as a second team guard on the all-city team and gave honorable mention to Ed Nowicki, Joe Magaddino, Charlie Schmidtke, Bob Wilson, Matt Mazza, Jim Dinsmore, Pat Butler, Frank Colucci and J oe Colosi. Dinsmore, Wilson and Violante combined in the iirst half to make it 26-O. Dinsmore, Violante and Colosi added one each in the last half to reach the final score for Duffy. Turner came through with a beautiful pass-play that covered 92 yards for their only score of the game. DUFFY 21-RYAN 6 The Rapideers scored their second straight win at the expense of a tough Ryan team. Dins- more, Colosi and Wilson scored Duffy's points with Ryan getting their only TD in the first half on a 48 yard run by Paul Topaz. McNamee proved himself with his iine work in the line. CANISUIS 20-DUFFY 7 In Duffy's third game they ran into a talented crew from Canisius and came out on the wrong end of the score. Minutes after Canisius scored in the 2nd quarter, Jim Dinsmore returned a punt 55 yards to tie the game at 7-7 but from thereon Ca- nisius had their own way. The Rapideers played a gallant game but injuries to key men impaired their usual smooth of- fense. DUFFY 26-DOUGHERTY 20 The Rapideers won their 3rd League game from a scrappy Dougherty squad. Dougherty matched the Rapideers point for point until the final three min- utes of the game when Ed No- wicki caught a 17 yard pass from Bob Wilson for the game win- ning touchdown. This was No- wicki's 2nd TD pass of the game. The other two touchdowns came from halfback Mike Vi- olante on runs of five and four- teen yards. Y,-,qi , 3 Q. Duffy made 15 first downs to Timon's 3 and gained 309 yards rushing and passing to Timon's 79. Bob McNamee played a brilliant game of defense spending more time in the opponents backiield than in his own. Vi- olante, the biggest ground gainer for the day with 170 yards on 29 carries, scored one TD with the other coming from Frank Colucci. i ffm' if Wi I .53 -1 . 1 - W DUFFY 20-FALLON 0 Dulfy again dominated an opponent, rushing and passing for 262 yards to Fallon's 85. Mike Vi,o1ante's 125 yards in 18 carries netted him two touchdowns and hard running halfback Frank Colucci picked up another one. Pat Butler ran for two extra points. The Antler, school newspaper, picked Frank Colucci and Jim Simpson as outstanding players of the game for their offensive and defen- sive play respectively. - - . ,. ,, . ,M ,fr si can ie fv 1' .2 ,V , 5 we , -- Q. 1 ' Y W 2: 2-:ir if, 5 -M , ,-A st - .1 .. af. JOSEPH7 The Rapideers topped St. Joe's for a 20-7 win finishing league play with a 6 won-1 lost record and placing second to Canisius. Mike Violante, play- ing his usual dependable game, scored two touchdowns from his halfback slot. Matt Mazza, sophomore quarterback, hit Jim Simpson with a 22 yard touch- down pass to finish the scoring. Again, the sterling performance of the defensive team led by Bob McNamee and Art Mar- cucci played a big role in the victory. DeSALES 25-DUFFY 0 The final game of the season brought the Rapideers up against the undefeated and untied De- Sales Knights from our rival Ob- late school at Lockport. The Knights were not to be denied and walked off with a con- vincing 25-0 win and possession for another year of the Duggan- Shanley Memorial trophy. The gridiron was a sea of mud but it did not stop Rich Burke. The DeSa1es back gained 262 yards of their total 345. Bill has been undefeated in high school cross-country and track competi- tion since November 1961. He holds the school record for the 880 with a time of 2101.4 and the all-City record for the mile at 4:44.2. The all-City record was set on a muddy track making it impos- sible for him to equal or better his own record for the mile of 4138.4 . . . Bill has participated in state-wide competi- tion, particularly, at North Tonawanda in a Handicap A.A.U. race, competing against top runners from public schools in Western New York, where he finished second but with the best time, also in competition with runners from Syracuse University, Buffalo State and University of Buffalo on a ten kilometer course in which he placed sixth. In State cham- pionship competition at Elmira, New York, he also placed sixth . . . Bill has accepted a track scholarship from Le- Moyne College in Syracuse where he will continue his education. The leading hitter for the team was Phil Kontrabecki, who batted a good .462 average. He finished a few percentage points behind the leader in the City Batting Title race .... The team hustled throughout the season, but this was not enough to compensate for the numerous errors which were com- mitted. The pitching was very good, but the fielding and hitting were unsteady. The team ended the season third in league stand- ings. The leading pitchers were Bruce Masters who compiled a 3-1 record and Phil Kontrabecki who averaged 9 strikeouts per game. . . . There were many underclassmen on the team and these men should provide an excellent nucleus for a good team in 1963. The tennis team was reorganized after a three year lapse. With memories of the 1959 championship squad in the back of their minds, the Duffy netmen took to the Hyde Park courts. Lack of experience was the greatest stumbling block but the team fought hard under the leadership of Father Raymond Christ. Captained by Tony DeLaurentis, the team of R. Putnam, F. Houchins, J. Eisen- hart, A. Borgese and Nat Parks finished with a 1 won-6 loss rec- ord. This years team is hard at work preparing for this season's eight meets as the yearbook goes to press. 106 The first Duffy swimming team was organized in February, 1962. Canisius is the only Catholic school in the Diocese with a regular team and school pool. The Catholic League held its first annual all- Catholic meet in March and the Duffy team was formed in prepara- tion for this meet .... Niagara University granted Duffy the use of their pool 3 afternoons a week for a month and Mr. Joseph Farugia, currently head swim coach at LaSalle Jr. H.S. accepted the task of selecting a team and getting it in shape .... The student response was enthusiastic as over 50 boys tried out for the 15 man squad. . . . Swimming against the best High School athletes in New York, Ken McNaughton, Jim LaDue and Frank Pinzel advanced as far as the finals in the Buffalo Athletic Club interscholastic meet .... The Duffy mermen came on strong in the all-Catholic meet and took 2nd place behind Canisius. Ken McNaughton's :25:1 took lst place in the 50 yard freestyle. Frank Pinzel, Don Supon and Frank Mur- tagh took 2nd places in various events. The medley relay team of Pinzel, Rickert, Supon and LaDue placed 2nd and several Duffy swimmers captured 3rd places .... The iirst Duffy swimmers have provided a good springboard for future Duffy mermen. Under the coaching of Father Ray Christ, the Duffy duffers fin- ished fourth in the league with a 4-4 season record. Daily the rolling hills and crafty sand traps at Hyde Park found our team sharpen- ing their drives and putts .... This years squad is now on the links with a former Duffy athlete, Mr. William Christy. Coach Christy was an all-city champion when a student at Duffy in 1954 ....
