World's Largest Power Project Through the great advances in sciences and engi- neering, man is once again attempting to harness the power of the mighty Niagara, to join forces with nature in the world's largest power project. The Power Authority of New York, headed by Mr. Robert Moses, has taken upon itself the enormous task of constructing the largest power project in the world today. Financed by private bonds, it is expected to reach an estimated cost of S720,000,000. ln accordance with the treaty between the United States and Canada, the United States is allowed to convert approximately 50,000 of the 200,000 cubic feet of water per second which flows over the Falls into power. To construct the needed facilities involved in producing this power, thirteen major contracting com- panies have been hired. These companies are working on five major projects: the intake structures, water conduits, the Tuscarora Reservoir, the Tuscarora Pump Generating Plant, and the Niagara Generating Plant. The intake structures, located one mile above the Falls, will be able to divert so much water that the Falls can literally be shut ott. The water will travel 411, miles through two parallel conduits, which are 85 feet in di- ameter, to the Tuscarora Reservoir. This reservoir will cover approximately 14,000 acres. lt will store the water used in the two generating plants. The construction of the Tuscarora Pump Generating Plant will involve the use of some 600,000 cubic yards of concrete and 27,000 tons of steel. The construction of the Niagara Generating Plant, the largest of the project, will utilize approximately 1,000,000 cubic yards of concrete and some 42,000 tons of steel. lt will be 389 feet high and 1,840 feet long and contain 13 generating units. Upon completion the full operation will provide an annual output of 13,000,000,000 kilowatt hours trans- mitted from the main transmitter in voltages of 115,000 and 230,000. Ninety percent of the estimated 8,500,000 cubic yards of rock have been removed. 35,000 holes have been drilled for the 1,000,000 pounds of explosives which have been used. One ot the biggest blasts up to date has utilized 19,600 pounds of dynamite. 170,000 cubic yards of concrete have been poured and rein- forced by 4,000 tons of steel with 340,000 cubic feet of lumber used as forms.

A general vlow of the conduits under construction. World's Most Important Power Proiecf The Niagara Power Project is very impressive to all and beneficial to Niagara Falls and New York State. The Project already has been an important factor in the economy of the city and locale. The power yet to be produced will contribute much to the social and eco- nomic well-being of the whole state of New York. As important as the Niagara Power Project is, there is a more important power project underway not only in this city, but also throughout the state and country. This power project, education, takes the raw material of a small child and develops it. The uneducated child, after years of educating, emerges powerful, intellectu- ally, socially, and physically. The dependent youth emerges an independent mature adult, who is capable to take on the duties of making a living for himself and family and of contributing to the well-being of society. ln public schools education ends with the three R's, reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. ln Catholic schools to this part of the power project there is added the fourth R, religion. This most important power is strengthened and developed. Man's most important function and duty in this life is to know, love, and serve God. Seek you first the kingdom of God. The Catholic Church, commanded by God to teach all nations, must and has the right to conduct schools. The inculcating of faith, moral truths, and the love of God and neighbor profits the individual and society. The state benefits tremen- dously by truly Christian men and women. We young men of Bishop Duffy High School are proud to be a part of the world's most important power project. We humbly submit to the reader the story of our phase in this divinely approved project.
