World's Largest Power Project Through the great advances in sciences and engi- neering, man is once again attempting to harness the power of the mighty Niagara, to join forces with nature in the world's largest power project. The Power Authority of New York, headed by Mr. Robert Moses, has taken upon itself the enormous task of constructing the largest power project in the world today. Financed by private bonds, it is expected to reach an estimated cost of S720,000,000. ln accordance with the treaty between the United States and Canada, the United States is allowed to convert approximately 50,000 of the 200,000 cubic feet of water per second which flows over the Falls into power. To construct the needed facilities involved in producing this power, thirteen major contracting com- panies have been hired. These companies are working on five major projects: the intake structures, water conduits, the Tuscarora Reservoir, the Tuscarora Pump Generating Plant, and the Niagara Generating Plant. The intake structures, located one mile above the Falls, will be able to divert so much water that the Falls can literally be shut ott. The water will travel 411, miles through two parallel conduits, which are 85 feet in di- ameter, to the Tuscarora Reservoir. This reservoir will cover approximately 14,000 acres. lt will store the water used in the two generating plants. The construction of the Tuscarora Pump Generating Plant will involve the use of some 600,000 cubic yards of concrete and 27,000 tons of steel. The construction of the Niagara Generating Plant, the largest of the project, will utilize approximately 1,000,000 cubic yards of concrete and some 42,000 tons of steel. lt will be 389 feet high and 1,840 feet long and contain 13 generating units. Upon completion the full operation will provide an annual output of 13,000,000,000 kilowatt hours trans- mitted from the main transmitter in voltages of 115,000 and 230,000. Ninety percent of the estimated 8,500,000 cubic yards of rock have been removed. 35,000 holes have been drilled for the 1,000,000 pounds of explosives which have been used. One ot the biggest blasts up to date has utilized 19,600 pounds of dynamite. 170,000 cubic yards of concrete have been poured and rein- forced by 4,000 tons of steel with 340,000 cubic feet of lumber used as forms. A general vlow of the conduits under construction. World's Most Important Power Proiecf The Niagara Power Project is very impressive to all and beneficial to Niagara Falls and New York State. The Project already has been an important factor in the economy of the city and locale. The power yet to be produced will contribute much to the social and eco- nomic well-being of the whole state of New York. As important as the Niagara Power Project is, there is a more important power project underway not only in this city, but also throughout the state and country. This power project, education, takes the raw material of a small child and develops it. The uneducated child, after years of educating, emerges powerful, intellectu- ally, socially, and physically. The dependent youth emerges an independent mature adult, who is capable to take on the duties of making a living for himself and family and of contributing to the well-being of society. ln public schools education ends with the three R's, reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. ln Catholic schools to this part of the power project there is added the fourth R, religion. This most important power is strengthened and developed. Man's most important function and duty in this life is to know, love, and serve God. Seek you first the kingdom of God. The Catholic Church, commanded by God to teach all nations, must and has the right to conduct schools. The inculcating of faith, moral truths, and the love of God and neighbor profits the individual and society. The state benefits tremen- dously by truly Christian men and women. We young men of Bishop Duffy High School are proud to be a part of the world's most important power project. We humbly submit to the reader the story of our phase in this divinely approved project. Speaking of the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, St. Francis de Sales calls it the sun of spiritual exercises, the center of the Christian religion, the heart of devo- tion and the soul of piety. And so it is for all true lovers of Jesus Christ. The Sacrifice of the Mass is the renewal of the Sac- rifice of the Cross. What took place on Calvary in a bloody manner takes place on the Catholic altars in an unbloody manner. Despite this difference in manner, the Sacrifice of the Mass is the same Sacrifice as the Sac- rifice of the Cross, because both Sacrifices have the same Priest, Jesus Christ, and the same purposes, lt is consummated. namely, Adoration, Expiation, Thanksgiving, and Pe- tition. One should often stop to consider this great truth. Every time a priest of the Holy Roman Catholic Church mounts the steps of our altars, he goes up to Calvary to renew the Sacrifice of the Cross. The entire mystery of Calvary is renewed in one's presence. There is no better way in assisting at this Sacrifice than by uniting oneself to Jesus Christ, the Priest and Victim. As one walks from the Holy Table after receiv- ing the Precious Food, he can be very confident in mind with David saying to oneself, I shall fear no evil, be- cause Thou, O Lord, art with me. It is not good for man to live alone. From the begin- ning of time men have lived together, have associated with each other. They banded together not only tor companionship but also for mutual aid and protection. Man is truly a social being. As essential requirement for living together is a means ot communicating. From this need there have grown languages which at first are spoken and then written. To live with others as a friend and citizen everyone must develop his powers to communicate in languages, native and toreign. For this reason the stu- dents at Dufty endeavor to develop fluency in lan- guage. They must accomplish this not only in the class- room, but even more in the extra-curricular activities, such as the school paper, yearbook, and dramatics. Furthermore, by participating in these latter activities the Duftyites gain experience in associating with other people and learn to work with them for a common goal. To live with their neighbors as good citizens the Dufty men study the history and organization ot their govern- ment. They increase this knowledge by participating in the Student Council, Current Events Club, and the Model U. N. The spirit that should prevail in all relations between neighbors is one of unseltish love. He who loves his neighbor as himself will truly be a good friend and a good citizen. When Joseph Addison wrote these words in the eighteenth century, could he have possibly foreseen how the power of music would be used today? Now more than ever before music pervades daily living. Many a household awalces in the morning to the music of the clock-radio. Throughout the day, the busy housewife sweeps and dusts in time with the popular songs. Even in many business houses, music has proven a boom to production, a salve to iangled nerves. Liturgical music has the power to raise ones thoughts and heart to God. ln battles, the music of the trumpets fires the warrior, arouses courageous patriotism. The background music of movies and television dramas unsuspectingly moves the emotions in rhythm with the words and events of the story. Some required Scottish or British or Cockney accents, plus the ability to shift from comedy to ro- mance or deep seriousness, From the large number of tryouts, a first rate cast was as- sembled. John Bienkowski was awarded the lead while Dave Smith, Joe Weber, and Paul Grassler were assigned to important roles, The one girls part was a natural for Duffys favorite actress, Maureen O'Connor of Ma- donna High. Her tender and warm perfor- mance iustified the confidence placed in her. H asfy Hearf The stage crew, headed by John Harvey, constructed a highly realistic setting which, along with their handling of lighting, props and sound-ettects, helped make the produc- tion an achievement which the Class ot '60 will recall with pride in the years to come. Every weekend found Duffy humming with social activity as buses, cars, and footpower brought the younger generation to the weekly dance. Teens paid admission, fought for a place to put their coat, and pushed their way to the dance floor. The pace livened up as everyone swung to the tune of Beyond the Sea, As the evening came to a close the tempo slowed down to Mr. Blue. During the course of the evening, friends were gained and friends were lost but in general a good time was had by all. With the end of I'll be Seeing You everyone found his apparel and left for home looking forward to the next Duffy dance, the big social event of the week. 36 Qc., 'Ci S225 lfs victims are Margaret Dougherty Loretta Fechner, and Pat Boyle. The lone T.D. was made on a 44-yard pass from Rich Con- dino to Marty Felice. DUFFY 0 LEW-PORT 7 Just like 1958's game Lew-Port knocked Duffy from the un- beaten ranks with a heart-breaking 7-0 score under the lights at Hyde Park Stadium. Unlike l958's l3-l2 loss on a fourth quarter fumble, fate struck early with a 53-yard touchdown pass from Lewiston- Porter's Rich King to Jim Lugert on the third play from scrim- mage in the game. Several times the Rapideers came within the shadow of Lew-Port's goal line only to be repelled each time by an inspired Lancer defense. 54 ROW ONE: E. Ellis, S, Marino, B. Atamian, J. Gabriele, J.
