SCIENCE In a world where the lives and futures of people are greatly decided in a scientist's laboratory, there is vital need for the development of Catholic minds in the field of science. DuBourg offers the chance to its students in courses of general science, biology, chemistry and physics. Not only the specialist may take science, every student is required to earn at least one science credit in his four years. Thus while supplying the future scientist, doctor, or nurse with the necessary background, the department also opens up a new world to the other students, a world in which every day happenings become startling, and common-place events, amazing. But because they are receiving a Catholic education, the students also discover the ultimate Reason for all these wonders. They come to know the most inventive of scientists - the Creator. Thus Bishop DuBourg High School achieves its primary aim. l 22

In terms of wealth and strength the United States is probably the greatest nation in the world. But its true greatness may have relatively little to do with its size or its manufacturing ability. The lasting greatness of the United States must rest on something other than material things. It can be measured only by examining the ideals in the hearts of each citizen, the ideals that this country holds and practices. In order to learn of these ideals and to benefit by the freedoms of our land, we study social sciences. Wie study the operations of our government in Social Studies Ig we learn what makes a healthy society in American Problems and Sociology. We study the heritage of all peoples in Wforld Historyg we study the glories of our past in American History. Not only do these courses help us to become better citizens but they enable us to solve our problems consistently with Christian morality and the best traditions of our country. SOCIAL STUDIES 21

PHYSICAL EDLICATIO np Keeping our body agile and strong, healthy and quick, is very important: God gave us a body to help the soul win heaven. Our wonderfully mechanized system is kept in good working order by long rough hours in the gym and on the athletic field. Three times a week we dig into our lockers for gym shoes and gym suits in place of the usual books. We have a wholesome, well-balanced program of indoor and outdoor intramurals as after-school activities. For those who are more interested and have the ability, varsity sports are avail- able. The important goals of our athletic program are good sportsmanship, team work, and the building of a strong body which has learnt to obey a higher power. 23
