MUSIC Life is a songg let's sing it together. The many choral students here keep life at DB dancing to merry tunes. Singing is the outward expression of the deeprdown feelings in your heart. It releases your joy and love and wakes a kindred feeling in those who hear the song. In the freshman through senior classes, chorus is an elective subject. Freshies and sophs trot down the slope to the Choral Room as part of their daily schedule. A select group, the Pius X Chorus, is composed of those stu- dents who are capable of passing an audition, both oral and written, and who have a degree of heroism. This special chorus meets before school - forty minutes before the rest of DB is awake. For those who would like another tool to give oral existence to their soul's music, the school has an instrumental music department with orchestras on three levels. It provides class lessons on various instruments and the final thrill of performing at school functions. 20

MATHEM TICS Mathematics is the tool by which we may discover wonders in the world God with infinite precision has created for us. Knowing and understanding mathematics, we can appreciate more fully the towering magnificence of a skyscraper and the breathless wonder of a suspension bridge. The chemist, the astronomer, the architect, the builders of ships, planes, and precision instruments have been using and will continue to use mathe- matics to evolve formulas responsible for the progress and development that we have seen and are still to see. Almost every aspect of our daily lives is influenced by mathematics. In whatever career we chose: scientist or engineer, businessman or craftsman, secretary or housewife - mathematics will be present. Wfe, at Bishop DuBourg High School, have a c orc mathematics curricula ranging from basic math to the more advanced study of algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. In terms of wealth and strength the United States is probably the greatest nation in the world. But its true greatness may have relatively little to do with its size or its manufacturing ability. The lasting greatness of the United States must rest on something other than material things. It can be measured only by examining the ideals in the hearts of each citizen, the ideals that this country holds and practices. In order to learn of these ideals and to benefit by the freedoms of our land, we study social sciences. Wie study the operations of our government in Social Studies Ig we learn what makes a healthy society in American Problems and Sociology. We study the heritage of all peoples in Wforld Historyg we study the glories of our past in American History. Not only do these courses help us to become better citizens but they enable us to solve our problems consistently with Christian morality and the best traditions of our country. SOCIAL STUDIES 21
