cavalieiz pnaven Lo, l, o youthful knight, Keeping long vigil before this shrine of grace Silent and still throughout the solemn hours In lowlihead of my untested powers, Here in this holy place To Thee and right My sword and shield do plight. lf in the midst of life, The stress of this hot strife, Thee I cannot see For the surrounding foe, And stricken sore Unto my spirit's core Do hide my grievous hurt beneath a prideful pall And so irrevocably fall, - Even in the thick of fight Purge Thou my sight. lf clouded with despoir I see naught fair And in midday yet walk in darkest night, Girt round with hopelessness unriven By friendly light, - ln any simplest thing That from the sod may spring, ln bird-notes trilling wild, In laughter ofa child, Give me a faint glimpse of Heaven.
