The Story o our School Archbishop Swint, realizing the need of a Catholic high school in Marshall County, proposed the idea to our pastors, Father Griffin, Father Daly, and Father Farrell. Under the auspices of our Archbishop, these priests solicited funds, so that construction on this project could begin at once. Since the first freshman class entered in the fall of 1955, much has been accomplished that will determine the future of our school. Awards have been won for the scholastic, the dramatic, and the athletic ability of the student body. This year We celebrate the ninth birthday of our school, Bishop Donahue Memorial High School. But of paramount importance is the fact that we have attained the most necessary asset of our lives, a Catholic education. ., , 2 E E Aw .. -- -- - 2- f: WW . ,- In memory of Rev. Joseph H. Hopkins. assistant pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish Church. Fr. Hopkins was born November 29, 1908, and ordained June 11, 1936. He served as a devoted apostle to the people of St. Francis. Father Hopkins was appointed in 1950 and served eleven years. No words can express the loss felt by those he served. That he is happy with Our Lord in heaven is our consolation. May his soul rest in peace. .4 .FW E , 5 X, '1u4.4 eff XI L! Father Farrell Our Pastors hs. West Virginia officially became a state June 20, 1862. Its first capitol was Linsley lnstitute in Whee- ling. Charleston later became the permanent seat of government in 1885. The Little Mountain State, as it is sometimes called, abounds in scenic beauty and wildlife. Because of this it has long been a favorite among tourists and sportsmen alike. The chief products of West Virginia are coal, oil, glassware, and chemicals. Our state, with its rolling hills and sprawling valleys, unceasingly inspires within the hearts of her people, a feeling of warmth and security, and intemal pride. E -7 ! vi, f- 5 7 E , -Q' Basketball Bishop Donahue has good reason to be proud of her varsity' team of '63, Under the excellent instruction of Coach O'Connell the Bishops finished their regular season with a record of 12 wins and 7 losses, averaging 59 points per game. A brief look at the tournaments: Down State the Bishops met tough opposition while playing against Charleston Catholic. Through- out the first quarter the Bishops matched their opponents point for point, but early in the second quarter Charleston kept themselves on top. With a final spurt of energy the Bishops fought their way to make the halftime score Bishops 29, Charleston 30. At the end of the fourth quarter the score was tied 49-49. ln the fast and furious overtime which followed the Bishops sadly went down in defeat 53-56. The Bishop's Reserve Team under Coach Niegemeyer wasn't as successful as the varsity and strangely enough finished their regular season with a reverse of the varsity record 12 losses and 7 wins. We wish them a better season next year. The Freshman squad coached by Mr. O,Connell played only three games this year, beating Moundsville twice and losing their last game to Bellaire. The ,63 season marks Donahue's fifth year of basketball and one of her best. To you Seniors of our team: Congratulations for your efforts of the past season and good .' luck for the future. To you Underclassmen: Keep up the spirit of good sportsmanship whether you win or lose.
